PHOTO BY DANIEL DOTTAVIO CANADIAN BRASS Sunday, April 7, 2019, at 3pm Foellinger Great Hall PROGRAM CANADIAN BRASS Chuck Daellenbach, tuba Christopher Coletti, trumpet Caleb Hudson, trumpet Achilles Liarmakopoulos, trombone Jeff Nelsen, horn This unique program by the Canadian Brass reaches from the early 17th century with Monteverdi; through the 18th century with Bach, Handel, and Mozart; the 19th century with Brahm; and into the 20th century with Harry Decosta and Michael Kamen. The program speaks also for the art of transcription. Anyone who thinks that transcription is merely a question of copying is proven wrong in this program. Transcription must be driven by making the correct choice of works to treat through an understanding of the voices within the pieces. ©2019 Lucy Miller Murray From soloists to quartets to chamber ensembles, the Classical Mix series creates a varied blend of outstanding musical experiences. The 2018-19 series includes Jupiter String Quartet and Jasper String Quartet with Michael Cameron, bass (October 4), Daniel Hope and Friends (October 25), Eroica Trio (November 13), Andersson Dance and Scottish Ensemble (April 2), and Canadian Brass (April 7). Now in its 36th year, the Canadian Brass continues to enchant audiences worldwide with its singular blend of impeccable playing, lowbrow antics, and genre-blending repertoire. This redoubtable quintet has become the standard by which the brass quintet is judged. Appearing tonight will be founding members Charles Daellenbach [tuba] and Eugene Watts [trombone] as well as newer ad ~ tions Josef Burgstaller [trumpet]. Jeroen Berwaerts [trumpet]. and Bernhard Scully [horn]. The Canadian Brass sprang from modest and highly experimental roots in Toronto. Ontario, in 1970. The brass quintet was not yet established as a serious concert ensemble, and that proved an irresistible challenge to Watts and Daellenbach . Their imagination and consummate musicianship eventually elevated the art of the brass quintet to what it is today. Along the way, the ensemble developed a unique character and a hugely successful rapport with audiences. Performances run the gamut from formal classical concerts to music served up with lively dialogue and theatrical effects. But no matter the style, the music is central and played with dedication and excellence.

  • THE ART of TRANSCRIBING MUSIC for BRASS: a STUDY of ARTHUR FRACKENPOHL and HIS PUBLISHED WORKS for the CANADIAN BRASS by PATRIC
THE ART OF TRANSCRIBING MUSIC FOR BRASS: A STUDY OF ARTHUR FRACKENPOHL AND HIS PUBLISHED WORKS FOR THE CANADIAN BRASS by PATRICK ARNOLD HOFFMAN (Under the Direction of Dr. Edward P. Sandor) ABSTRACT Dr. Arthur Frackenpohl has made a significant contribution to the success of the Canadian Brass through his arrangements and transcriptions for brass quintet and brass ensemble. This ongoing collaboration of more than 20 years has produced music for 21 recordings on the CBS Masterworks, Phillips, and RCA labels, and has provided concert repertoire for the world famous Canadian Brass Quintet. The author develops a biography to outline the elements in the life of this composer and arranger that shaped his musical talents and ideas, and shows how his interaction with professional brass players influenced his work. A history of the brass quintet is followed by a description of the relationship between Dr. Frackenpohl and the Canadian Brass and the key factors to its success. A descriptive analysis of a selected transcription and an annotated bibliography of Dr. Frackenpohl’s arrangements and transcriptions for the Canadian Brass is supplemented with a bibliography of his complete works for brass. The afternoon program will include Girolamo Frescobaldi’s “Toccata,” John Wilbye’s “Madrigal,” Mozart’s “Rondo from Quintet for Horn & Strings,” Giovanni Gabrieli’s “Canzona,” Bramwell Tovey’s “Santa Barbara Sonata,” a tribute to Fats Waller, Christopher Dedrick’s arrangement of “Penny Lane,” Tomaso Albinoni’s “Adagio in G minor,” Astor Piazolla’s “Tres Tangos,” and highlights from Bizet’s “Carmen.” The five virtuosi of Canadian Brass have made the brass quintet an exciting vehicle for serious concert music. The quintet — now in its 34th season — consists of new members Justin Emerich (trumpet) and Bernhard Scully (horn) alongside original members Stuart Laughton (trumpet), Gene Watts (trombone), and Chuck Daellenbach on tuba. The group has a long history of recording classical repertoire, with a special affinity for Baroque music which requires the brilliance and musical structure that has become the Canadian Brass’ trademark.
