As singer-songwriter and SOCAN member Gordon Lightfoot wrote, “If you plan to face tomorrow, do it soon.” These are sage words from one of Canada’s greatest songwriters, and are perfectly in line with SOCAN’s commitment to constantly reinvent itself. Our activities in 2013 were no exception. Reinvention is crucial to the way SOCAN conducts business. In 2013, we collected and distributed record royalties with fewer resources. It was a record year for total revenue, with $276-million brought in for members: an increase of approximately nine percent over 2012. Of this, $51-million came from outside of Canada, which was also an all-time record for SOCAN. At the same time, the net expenses required to run SOCAN in 2013 amounted to only 12.9 percent of total revenues (a substantial improvement over the 15.4 percent of 2012), and the lowest in the history of SOCAN. SOCAN is actually driving down expenses while achieving even better results, as we continually work to improve our efficiencies towards the Eric Baptiste Chief Executive Officer goal of becoming the leanest, most agile and most productive music rights organization in the world.

  • Perspectives from Participants in the Halifax Music Scene
23 May 2009 ISRN Halifax Working Paper Why Halifax Attracts Musicians: Perspectives from participants in the Halifax music scene Jill L Grant, Jesse Morton, and Jeff Haggett School of Planning Dalhousie University As part of a national study on the social dynamics of economic innovation1 researchers in the School of Planning at Dalhousie University in Halifax (Nova Scotia) have profiled several sectors of the Halifax economy which employ talented and creative workers. During the initial stages of the investigation several respondents involved in economic, cultural, and social development in the city pointed to the importance of the music sector in making Halifax a vibrant and engaging city. Consequently, the team decided to investigate the music sector to understand what makes those workers come to and stay in Halifax. This paper reports on the results of 19 semi-structured interviews conducted in 2007 (n=7) and 2008 (n=12). Interviews in 2007 focussed on factors related to the attraction and retention of talented and creative workers in Halifax. In 2008, the questions asked about the dynamics of the sector and knowledge flows within it. In both sets of interviews, respondents in the music sector talked about the music scene in other parts of Canada and beyond. Researchers noticed that respondents contextualized the Halifax scene in terms of the wider music national and international scene in ways that did not happen commonly in some other sectors profiled (e.g., health research, built environment consulting). Because analysis suggested that the relative evaluation of different music scenes plays an important role in where musicians decide to live and work, understanding the factors that make Halifax attractive may have implications beyond the music sector.
