Race/Event Reports 3rd Annual Missoula Mile June 3, 2012 - To Benefit Prostate Cancer Awareness One of Run Wild Missoula’s premier events, The Missoula Mile for Prostate Cancer Awareness, is changing dates from September to June 3rd. Now in its third year, the Missoula Mile promises to be bigger and better than ever, with some fantastic format changes and new race waves added. In addition to donating all the proceeds to prostate cancer awareness, this year participants will also have the opportunity to make direct donations and/or fundraise for our 2012 prostate cancer awareness project with Partnership Health Center! As race director, I’m excited about how our little event has grown and about all the great people and organizations stepping up to make the Missoula Mile so awesome. We will start off this year with our new prep mile. This race is sponsored by Momentum Athletic Training. It will include middle school and high school runners. Some of these young runners will be coming off their spring track season and will be in great shape. There will be some great prizes and hopefully lots of young runners. The next race will be our women’s walk/run, followed by the men’s walk/run. We hope to have runners of all abilities; after all, it’s only a mile! We will also have age categories so some of the young runners don’t have to worry about competing against some of those very fast 50 and 60 year olds! Back by popular demand will be our famous kids run. The youngsters will follow Charlie’s Big Dipper Ice Cream truck for a ½ downtown with some goodies afterword. New this year will be the 1st Responders’ Challenge Race. Missoula’s own Andy Drobeck (world famous stair climber) has put out a challenge to other firemen to race in their fire gear. There’s a rumor that they may give the police a head start if they can find some to accept the challenge. All race/walks will start downtown in front of The Runners Edge. The runners/walkers will then head down Higgins Ave. to the Big Dipper Ice Cream Palace and back to the start. This course is made possible by Missoula in Motion and Sunday Streets Missoula. They have joined together to close Higgins Ave. for the day to give folks the opportunity to walk and ride their bikes downtown and enjoy all kinds of festivities along the way. (For more information on the day’s events go to Sunday Streets Missoula.) As mentioned earlier, this year all proceeds will go to Partnership Health Center, Missoula County’s health facility. Partnership will use the proceeds to fund their prostate cancer awareness program and help offset prostate cancer treatment for those who cannot otherwise afford care. All of this could not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors. Our key sponsor this year is Saint Patrick Hospital. In addition, First Interstate Bank, Five Valleys Urology, Dr. Margie Menendez (Montana Cancer Center and also one of our fastest Docs around), and Momentum Training all are gold sponsors; while The Big Dipper, The Runner’s Edge, Missoula In Motion, and Sunday Streets Missoula all provided silver sponsorships. Most importantly, the proceeds will go to Partnership Health Center for those men that may not normally get the prostate check- ups and 5

information that all men should have. Thank you to Dr. John Miller (mile veteran) and Whitney Wilson for their work at Partnership. This year we have received help from Momentum Training, Big Dipper Ice Cream, Sunday Streets Missoula, Missoula in Motion, The Runners Edge, with some very special help from Johnny O and the good doctors at Five Valleys Urology and Dr Margie Menendez (Montana Cancer Center). Also a special thanks to Saint Patrick’s Hospital always there when you need them. There is a rumor that the Mayor of this great city may even show up to give a little encouragement. Remember, if you can’t run a mile you can walk. It’s for a great cause. Hope to see you there. For more information go to runwildmissoula.org or stop by the Runners Edge. Fighting prostate cancer a step at a time. Happy running, Tim Brooker

Missoula Marathon Course Cleanup, June 30, 8:30am Folks, the Missoula Marathon is only a few short weeks away, and that also means it’s the time of the year when we need to think about representing Montana, the city of Missoula, and the Missoula Marathon and Half Marathon courses as best we can to all runners, whether they live right around the corner from us, or travelling from any of the 50 States, Canada, and abroad to our wonderful three-day event. On Saturday, June 30, at 8:30 a.m., we really need your help cleaning our stunning Missoula Marathon courses. However, if you look a little closer – I dare you – you’ll find more than just beautiful flowers, the occasional wildlife, and lovely scenery. Nope, you’ll find lots of garbage, which was carelessly thrown out of their vehicles in the past year! That is not how we want to showcase the Best Marathon in the country and the city in which we live and run. In past years, we did what we could with the few people that actually showed up. The more volunteers we can get to help, the more miles we can clean, AND, the faster it will go. Please, consider volunteering for an hour or two, on Saturday, June 30, at 8:30 a.m. at the start of the Missoula Half Marathon on Blue Mountain Rd, right next to The PEAK. But please don’t park in their parking lot. Rather, park on Buckhouse Ln. We’ll provide big garbage bags, rubber gloves, refreshments, snacks, water, coffee, and fun times, of which you can be very proud. Ask your family, friends and neighbors to help, too. We will pick up the filled garbage bags from the side of the road. It is that simple. To be best prepared, it’s best to wear long pants, long-sleeve t-shirt, shoes (sandals are not recommended), a hat, and heavier garden gloves. The Missoula Marathon is counting on YOU! A sincere thank you, and in hopes to see many of you soon and on June 30! ~Vo von Sehlen, Missoula Marathon Committee member

Bloomsday and the RWM Bloomsday Bus On May 6, 2012, at 5:15 a.m., 45 Bloomies boarded a new Beachliner bus to run or walk in the Bloomsday race in Spokane. Well, 44 participated and one had to watch. Carol Hedges, one of the hostesses, broke her foot a week and a half earlier and is sidelined on crutches or a wheelchair. However, that didn’t stop her from going to Spokane. We have been running this race for 22 years and she isn’t just my sister, she is my running buddy. I realize now how much I rely on her to keep me going.

6

I love this race. Not because I have a hope of coming in first, not even a faint hope, or because I excel at this distance, 7.46 miles, or because it is a flat, easy run, it’s not. I love it because of the experience. The race is huge. Over the years that I have participated the count has run from 40,000 to 60,000 Bloomies. You are divided in groups according to your finish times. Groups are denoted by colors, yellow-elite runners, green, orange, blue and violet. As you stand in line you see t-shirts from all over, sometimes you see a Run For The Trees or a River Bank Run t-shirt and sometimes you even see someone you know. As you stand there beach balls fly thru the air and sometimes it is a tortilla Frisbee. As it gets closer to the start time, people start taking off their outer clothes and flinging them onto the trees. Later, after the race, the clothes are gathered up and donated to Goodwill. This is just indicative of how the whole race is supported by the city of Spokane. For a $1.00 you can ride a city bus from outlying areas. Portapotties abound at the beginning of the race and along its route. Businesses adopt water stations that are 50 feet long. Thirty radio stations and bands play along the route-rock, accordion, plastic buckets, solos, and country. On Doomsday Hill you can shake hands with the Vulture. As you run thru the residential sections people line the streets cheering you on, running their hoses to cool you off, playing Chariots of Fire and Eye of the Tiger to spur you on. The t-shirt is a big secret until you pick it up at the end of the race. We always try to guess what color it will be before we get to the end. And then it is over. By 2:00 p.m., the streets are clean, portapotties are picked up, and clothes are out of the trees. We were back on the bus at 2:00p.m. Missoula time and home by 5:30p.m. Our Bloomies on the bus were great, our bus was wonderful, as was our driver, Bill. The use of the Y showers after the race made the ride home refreshing. Thanks to Runner’s Edge for our ditty bags and Run Wild Missoula for making this trip possible. I hope the experience was good for all our Bloomies and encourage everyone to put Bloomday on their bucket list to do at least once. ~Bonnie Fergerson

A THANK YOU for a THANK YOU NOTE!! It is amazing the power two words can have. “Thank you.” Just two simple words that can change somebody's day. We all forget to use them. We forget to say thank you to our spouses, children, friends, co-workers and to the person who stopped for us at the cross-walk. We appreciate what they do and who they are, but we forget to let them know. Sometimes we just need to be reminded of the power of those two words. My reminder came in the mail. I had been asked to provide some help with the Marathon training class. It was short notice, but I was happy to help. A few days later I arrived home after a long day at work. It wasn't a bad day, just a long one. There was an envelope sitting there from RunWildMissoula. It was a thank you note from Eva for helping with the training group. That little note from Eva made my day. So this is a big THANK YOU to Eva. I think all of us sometimes take for granted all the Eva does for us in RunWildMissoula. Eva makes the whole thing work. As a race director and runner I really appreciate everything she does and she always has a smile on her face. Thanks for the Thank You note Eva. You made my day and reminded me of the importance of those two words. I'll be sure to tell the “spouse of the house” thanks the next time she washes my socks. ~Scott Rouse

Pengelly Double Dip Celebrates Trails and Friends On June 9, some 300 runners will converge on the trails around Mt. Sentinel for the annual Pengelly Double Dip trail runs. Run Wild Missoula, which puts on the races, hopes that 200 people will run the strenuous 13.1-mile long course and that another 100 will participate in the hilly but speedier 10k course. The races are named after David Pengelly, a local mountaineer who loved and trained on the trails on Mt. Sentinel before he died in a mountaineering accident. In addition to honoring David, Run Wild has announced that this year’s race is also a tribute to Micah True, better known as Caballo Blanco of “Born to Run Fame.” True, who tirelessly raised awareness about the Raramuri people of the Copper Canyon of Mexico, died on a trail run in the Gila Wilderness earlier this year. Some have rightly asked why a trail run in Montana – Map of races thousands of miles away from the Copper Canyon – is being used as a tribute to Micah. The answer is simple: he loved Missoula, and Missoula loved him. Micah came to Missoula in 2010 and talked to some 400 Missoulians at the Wilma Theater about the Raramuri/Tarahumara runners of Mexico and about his Copper Canyon Ultra Marathon -- the 50- mile he organized for trail runners he calls Mas Locos to provide money and corn to the indigenous people of the canyon. While in Missoula, Micah ran the trails of Missoula and made many friends while discussing his “Run Free” philosophy. For a wonderful history of Micah, please read this New York Times articlehttp://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/21/sports/caballo-blancos-last-run- the-micah-true-story.html?emc=eta1. In any event, Mas Locos around the world are dedicating trail runs to Micah’s memory, and Missoula’s PDD seems an appropriate Mas Loco run to pay tribute to someone who loved to run trails, the steeper the better. Other fun stuff to know: 1. Maria Walton, also known by her Mas Loco name of La Mariposa (the Butterfly), will be attending the Double Dip this year. She will run the race Caballo Blanco along with Maria “La and will discuss the future of the Copper Canyon Ultra Marathon with Mariposa” Walton in Urique, Mexico participants. at the CCUM 2. The long course is limited to 200 people, so early registration encouraged at http://www.runwildmissoula.org/index.php/ID/d99534ea/item/pengelly- double--single-dip/fuseaction/rwm.clubRaces.htm. There is no cap on the shorter course but early registration is requested to avoid long lines at the start. Race day registration is at 7:30 a.m. 3. Both races start on the Kim Williams Trail at the University of Montana Riverbowl East Field. The long course starts at 9 a.m. and the short course starts at 9:30. The map of the races is to the left and on the RWM website. 4. Those who expect to take longer than four hours on the long course are encouraged to run the shorter race or to start at 8 a.m. and to carry water and nutrition. Those participants will get a finisher award but no official time. 5. The finisher awards are glass growlers this year and are perfect for filling with your favorite beverage or for using as a piggy bank. 6. Sponsor Sapphire Physical Therapy will be hosting a post-race barbeque where the race awards will be distributed. Sapphire will provide traditional mean and non-meat choices as well as other contemporary barbeque fare. In addition, the first 100 people to attend the barbeque will receive a very cool trail running related gift. Massages and other services will also be provided to runners with sore dogs, legs, or other body parts. 7. Other sponsors of the race are: Momentum Athletic Training (Momentum’s Kiefer Hahn holds the record for the long course); Trail 103.3 (Did you hear the cool radio spots?); Runner’s Edge (providing timing, aid stations and awesome winner gifts); the faculty at Resources for Environmental and Occupational Health (REOH); Rocky Mountain Development Group (watch 8

for RMDG president Rick Wishcamper on the course in costume); Hammer Nutrition (which provided nutrition on the course); and Garlington, Lohn & Robinson, PLLP (which provided lawyers on the course…you never know when you might need one). 8. Why is a flying elephant the logo for the PDD? Originally, the PDD was going to be on Mt. Jumbo, so graphic artist Brad Lamson created the elephant logo as a nod to the famous Jumbo elephant. The organizers liked the logo so much that they kept it even after the course was changed to the Mt. Sentinel area. 9. You can send questions to [email protected] ~Kevin Twidwell

Wildflower Walk/Run, Waterworks Hill Several of us met at the Breakfast Run this morning and headed to the North Hills to look at wildflowers. The North Hills, including Water Works Hill (the one that used to have the large painted peace sign on it) are a great place to see wild flowers, common and uncommon, while also working out. We made it into a run/walk combo so everyone could stay together and visit about flowers. Here’s some of the things we saw.

Albert’s penstemon (Penstemon albertinus) Arrow leaf balsam root (Balsamorhiza saggitatta) Bitterroots (Lewisia rediviva) They weren’t blooming yet, but the flower buds were big. Soon they’ll be out! Cut leaf daisy (Erigeron compositus) Death camas (Zigadenus venosus) Dog tooth groundsel (Senecio canus) Fuzzy tongue penstemon (Penstemon eriantherus) Golden aster (Heterotheca villosa) Missoula phlox (Phlox missouliensis) Oval leafed buckwheat (Eriogonum ovalifolium) Paintbrush (Castilleja hispida) Scorpionweed (Phacelia hastata) Silky lupine (Lupinus sericeus) Spring chickweed (Cerastium arvense) Albert’s penstemon Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)

Native flowering shrubs included chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) and mountain ash (Sorbus scopulina). We stopped to admire all the bird nests in a stand of decadent cottonwood trees, and saw a Peregrine falcon chase away a small group of starlings. Unfortunately it looks like the starlings have a nest going in one of the cottonwoods; but fortunately the Peregrine falcon in onto them. We watched this with a meadowlark singing in the background, and just a few dozen yards from an active bluebird box. Of course we also saw most of the noxious weeds of the North Hills. These are non-native plants that were introduced by people and cause serious ecological damage (by displacing native plant communities and the insects, birds and mammals that depend on those native plant communities). Fortunately we saw evidence of management actions being taken by Missoula Parks and Rec over the past many years, and I can see that the mountain looks better each year. Arrow leaf balsam root Those noxious weeds are leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula), Dalmatian toadflax (Linaria dalmatica) and sulfur cinquefoil (Potentilla recta). Then we cruised down Cherry Gulch and back to the Runners Edge. The wind was pretty spectacular on top of the hill, so we were glad to be back on safe footing and out of the windchill zone. But I’m already thinking of heading back up there next Saturday! So see you at the next Breakfast Run, every Saturday at 8 am at the Runners Edge. And if you are looking for more opportunities to learn about native plants or local nature in general, check out www.mtnativeplants.org (the Missoula group is the Clark Fork Chapter) or the Montana Natural History Center (www.montananaturalist.org) or Five Valleys Audubon Society (www.fvamissoula.org) ~Marilyn Marler UM Botanist ([email protected]) Native Plant Gardening Coach (www.butterflypropertiesllc.com/garden_coaching.html) City of Missoula Alderwoman ([email protected]) Death camas Persistent although not exceptionally fast runner ([email protected]) 11

Run Wild Missoula Volunteer Spotlight

Pam Gardiner Run Wild Missoula has hundreds of volunteers that make the success of the organization possible, but often times volunteers go above and beyond and stand out among the crowd. This month I’d like to acknowledge Pam Gardiner. Pam co-leads to Galloway Training Class with John Pitcairn. She also developed the popular Back of the Pack program. Pam recently had shoulder surgery, making it difficult for her to do everyday things like driving and lifting. But that didn’t stop her from supporting the Galloway runners this past weekend when they were completing up to 23 miles. Many of us in leadership roles with Run Wild Missoula had other commitments on Sunday, May 20 and weren’t available to help with the long run and milestone for many in the Galloway training class. That didn’t stop Pam. She was a moving aid station for the runners from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., offering them water, gels and words of encouragement. I’m sure the Galloway runners appreciate you more than you think, Pam! Thank you for your commitment to Run Wild Missoula and your Galloway Training Class. ~Eva Dunn-Froebig

Pam Gardiner Run Wild Missoula News Letter from the Executive Director: Youth Running in Missoula From an early age running was an important part of my identity and it helped me gain confidence, friends and healthfulness. Now as I watch my kindergartener enjoy the youth running programs in Missoula I’m reminded of what an impression my own youth running experiences had on me in elementary school. I remember feeling a sense of accomplishment as I crossed the finish line, no matter how I placed, and delight when I was a handed a ribbon, even if it was a participation award. These experiences informed the decisions I made throughout school and adulthood. They gave me a sense of what it’s like to work hard to accomplish a goal and the activities helped me meet friends with similar values. I can see already that my son is having similar positive experiences. This spring, Milo finished eight weeks of training with his P. E. teacher Glenn Moffatt (also a RWM member) of Paxson Elementary School and ran the Riverbank Run 1-Mile with friends. They got up early and ran in the gym and around the school twice a week, tracking their miles. Milo also completed four weeks of practices and track meets with Missoula Youth Track and ran the 50 meter dash, 100 meter dash and did the and . He carries his fifth and sixth place ribbons around like they are his most important possessions and he’s already asked if he participate in Missoula Youth Track again next year. The beauty of Missoula Youth Track is it helps the high school students who coach the younger kids as well. The younger kids get exercise, meet new friends, experience in a noncompetitive atmosphere and the high school students gain leadership skills and fulfill volunteer requirements. These youth running programs are also extremely affordable. The Paxson Running Club is free and Missoula Youth Track is $30 for season, which includes a t-shirt and awards at their track meets. Scholarships are also available for those who need it. Run Wild Missoula also has a youth running program. The Missoula Kids Marathon on Saturday, July 7 encourages kids to run 25 miles before the day of the event (between January and July 2012) when they finish the last 1.2 miles of their marathon. The cost is $15 and kids get a t-shirt, medal and other goodies.

The Missoula Kids Marathon will offer a kids training run on Thursday, May 31 at 5 p.m. at Washington-Grizzly Stadium. Registration to the event will be available at the training run. You know the benefits of running no matter how old you were when you got your start. Encourage the child in your life to participate in a youth running program. Even if they don’t stick with it, they will thank you for the life-changing experience. We are lucky to have so many running opportunities in Missoula for kids. Want to find out more about running opportunities for youth? Visit http://www.makeitmissoula.com/blogs/running-walking-blog/ We have several recent blogs on youth running programs. ~Eva Dunn-Froebig
