The actual impact of the Turkish language and culture began with the start of Ottoman conquests. With the Ottoman conquest, there have been great changes on the structure of the Balkan communities. As a result of this comprehensive and large impact, thousands of Turkish words entered into the Balkanic Languages. The quantity of Turkish words, their effect of the Balkanic Cultures and Languages have directed the researchers to search these words. The researchers who investigated the Turkish words in the Balkanic Languages faced a fundamental problem. The main problem that the researchers faced was the issue of designation of these words in question. Due to the appearance of the words of Arabic and Persian origin along with Turkish, some researchers have applied the term ―Orientalism‖ for these words in question. Since the vast majority of words in the Balkanic Languages are Turkish, the researchers, considering the fact that Arabic and Persian words entered into the Balkanic Languages through Turkish, have preferred the concept ―Turkism‖ for these words. Researchers, without making a detailed evaluation on either ―Orientalism‖ or ―Turkism,‖ have stated their more general preferences.

    The presence of Turkish borrowings in XIX century written Albanian, the case of the New Testament translation by Vangjel Meksi Dr. Elvis BRAMO University of Tirana, Faculty of Foreign Languages, Department of Greek Language, [email protected] ABSTRACT The historic moments and socio-cultural developments permitted Turkish and Albanian languages to interact through everyday words as well as legal, administrative and state terminology, further to be developed in the research. The quantitative and qualitative effect of Turkish language on XIX century written Albanian draws our attention towards the linguistic phenomena of interferences of Turkish into Albanian, observed from the angle of lexical notions. The linguistic wealth creates a favorable environment for the observation of the linguistic areal by entirely reflecting the lexical effects on the translation of the New Testament. Keywords: History, socio-cultural development, science and terminology, linguistic interaction and interinfluence. 1.     The Albanian Mawlid of Hafiz Ali Ulqinaku (r.a.) STUDY GUIDE MUSLIM ACADEMIC TRUST 1436 1 Thank you for your support for the Cambridge New Mosque Project. This recording is a gift to our Project by a group of students of traditional sacred knowledge in the noble Muslim land of Albania. We are proud to present this recording, which gives a unique insight into a purely traditional scene of Balkan mosque life, with English subtitles taken in part from the translation by E.J.W. Gibb of the Mawlid of Süleiman Çelebi, may Allah’s mercy rest upon him. The singers include many from the very old generation who learned and loved the Mawlid publicly before the official prohibition of religion in Albania by the atheist regime of Enver Hoxha in 1967, and secretly after that time. Between 1967 and 1992, scholars were mocked, tortured and imprisoned for their lack of belief in atheism. The country’s mosques were closed and most were destroyed. Under a law of 1976, failure to accept atheism carried an automatic ten-year prison sentence. Many ulema were killed; among the martyrs we remember Albania’s grand mufti, Hafiz Ibrahim Dibra, and mufti of Durrës Mustafa Efendi Varoshi, and hundreds of others.     Preface PREFACE Kata KULAVKOVA (Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts) An Arabesque for the Black Arab, Bolen Dojcin and White Angelina Our research into the subject of The Black Arab as a (Balkan, Mediterranean) Figure of Memory, conducted within the framework of the European project Interpretations managed by the Macedonian Academy of Arts and Sciences, was aimed at initiating a new mode of thinking and perception of Slavic and non-Slavic Balkan cultures. This mode of thinking might not be completely new in the general sense of the word, but it is new within the framework of the contemporary Balkan social constellation. For this constellation has long been char- acterised by mutual negations; animosities; exclusive interpretations of the past; immoderate appropriations of the spiritual legacy of neigh- bouring cultures; denials of the right of others to partake in a shared cultural and historical heritage; indicative explications of ethnic cultural identity through the application of historical paradigms; a fi xation on history; adoration of ancient ‘scripts’ of culture; the politicization of our shared spiritual heritage; revision and negation of identities; cultural xeno-skepsis; and the increased prevalence of ethnic or bi-ethnic prin- ciples in the constitution and functioning of states. Our mode of thinking starts from the belief that, at the beginning of the 21st century, in an atmosphere of global crisis and threatened prosperity, the peoples of the Balkans are in need of a scientifi cally based, multi-focal interpretative methodology which will observe his- tory as an intersection of autochthonous and shared constituents. The contemporary hermeneutics of history should be founded upon a com- parative and inclusive epistemological model.

Regardless of the fact that these languages are different from each-other, again in almost of them Turkish language has influenced with elements of its structure and lexicon. Turkish with elements of its structure has influenced as well on Albanian language and Romanian to. In this paper we will take a general view on grammatical elements of plural of Turkish language such as the morphemes -lar/-ler and the use of these morphemes in the word-formation of Albanian and Rumanian languages. Besides knowing suffixes like -xhi/-çi /-llëk/-çe/-li/-lli ecc. used with Turkish borrowed themes, we will focus on the using of these suffixes in Albanian and Romanian languages. Furthermore we will explain some derivated words in Albanian and Romanian languages and the using of these morphemes today. Introduction For more than half a millenium, Turkish was the official language in much of the Balkan peninsula. It was the language of administration and of the market place; it was spoken in village as well as in towns; and, among populations that converted to Islam while retaining their native languages, Turkish had a sociocultural prestige added to the legal and practical importance it possessed for all of Turkey in Europe.

Kasapolli, PhD Candidate University of Zagreb, Croatia Email: [email protected] Abstract This paper presents an outline of the current state of Albanian language in Kosovo in view of the impact of other languages, English in particular. It attempts to understand the underlying causes for the intrusion of English from a diachronic socio- linguistic viewpoint, by looking at similar phenomena across the world and relevant research by linguistic scholars. The paper seeks answers to the following questions: What are the causes of English expansion in Kosovo, and how is it affecting the Albanian language? What determines the choice of language and the level of tolerance for borrowings? Furthermore, are there suggested approaches on how to treat this type of modern-day bilingualism? The scope of this paper is in keeping with current efforts to see language changes from a constructive angle, that of bilingualism and multilingualism as global phenomena.

According the studies the areas most affected by Turkish borrowings were urbanization, clothing, kitchen, administration etc. A part of Turkish borrowings are fully assimilated by the Albanian language and become part of it, as many others that are replaced by respective corresponding of Albanian language. The present study is an analyze of some Turkish borrowings, which are included in the Albanian explanatory dictionaries of 1980 and 2006. There is made a comaprison of these examples provided on this paper , between Explanatory Dictionary of Albanian Language (1980 and 2006) and the Albanian Language Etymological Vocabulary. Through selected characteristic cases of research, we have tried to find the reasons for the situation and the use of these two types of Turkish borrowings in Albanian language.
