Index to The Way It Was by Byron Pilbeam Indexed by Mary Vergowven and Rachel Fales Edited by Rachel Fales, Patricia Hudson, Mary Vergowven The Way it Was feature, written by Byron Pilbeam, appeared first in the Dundee Reporter on December 24, 1987. It ran as a regular feature in the Dundee Reporter until The Independent picked it up on July 27, 1989, where it continued to run regularly until December, 1999. Mr. Pilbeam was a life- long resident of the Dundee area, growing up in the community of Rea. He had a knack for writing, and he shared stories of his life, mentioning places, names, and events that were specific to Dundee. The articles identify places, events, and a great number of individuals and families in the Dundee area, making it a valuable tool that allows genealogists to place an ancestor in a certain place at a specific time. For the most part, the 18th chapter of the Chicago Manual of Style (15th edition) was used as an indexing standard. However, when working with maiden and married surnames, See references are used to guide users from the maiden surname to the married surname, rather than guiding users from the married surname to the maiden. Date:Page format is used. A (p) after the page number indicates that a picture was included regarding the entry. Any businesses, events, and/or locations indexed are in Dundee, unless otherwise noted. While creating the index, the authors note that both surnames and given names were spelled differently from one article to another. In these cases, see also entries were created to lead users to those alternative spellings. Poems were included in some of the articles. Some were signed by Mr. Pilbeam, and those are cross- indexed using the title as a main heading, as well as using the title as a sub-heading under the main heading “Pilbeam, Byron R., Sr.” Any poems that were unsigned or that were not noted as being written by Mr. Pilbeam are only indexed using the title as a main heading. Fictional stories are cross indexed the same way as signed poetry. 1 TABLE OF CONTENTS A .................................................................................................................................................................... 3 B .................................................................................................................................................................... 6 C .................................................................................................................................................................. 14 D .................................................................................................................................................................. 20 E .................................................................................................................................................................. 27 F................................................................................................................................................................... 31 G .................................................................................................................................................................. 34 H .................................................................................................................................................................. 39 I ................................................................................................................................................................... 46 J ................................................................................................................................................................... 47 K .................................................................................................................................................................. 49 L ................................................................................................................................................................... 54 M ................................................................................................................................................................. 57 N .................................................................................................................................................................. 63 O .................................................................................................................................................................. 65 P .................................................................................................................................................................. 67 Q .................................................................................................................................................................. 73 R .................................................................................................................................................................. 74 S................................................................................................................................................................... 81 T .................................................................................................................................................................. 90 U .................................................................................................................................................................. 93 V .................................................................................................................................................................. 94 W ................................................................................................................................................................. 95 X Y Z ........................................................................................................................................................... 100 2 A A.
