NW Oregon Subsection Goals 2016

1. Communication  Seek ways to improve communication between the Section and NW OR  Notify Subsection members of meeting and training information offered by both the Subsection and the Section  Provide industry career information to membership  Increase Subsection officer and committee chair communication through specific partnerships  Notify Subsection members of training opportunities and events occurring outside the Subsection  Invite students to attend monthly meetings and introduce them to the other members

2. Finances  Continue to strengthen financial procedures  Maintain spending within a set budget  Help the committees to find new ways to bring in revenue

3. Future  Continue to support scholarships when finances allow  Involve students in Subsection meetings and activities

4. Training  Provide training for both new and continuing officers as they transition into new positions  Put into use the new position description sheets created in 2015 for all the officer positions and committee chair positions  Encourage all officers and committee chairs to attend the Winter SAC training  Provide affordable training for members

5. Integration of Members:  New members receive free lunch at their first meeting  Retired Subsection members and students are welcome and receive free lunch at monthly meetings  New members and students will be introduced at Subsection Meetings

6. Leadership  Committee Chairs and Officers meet at least once per year . Fall Budget Meeting: create a new Spending and Work Plan  NW OR Officers meet at least once per quarter

 Vote to approve the updated Bylaws and Policies and Procedures documents for the Subsection. Doug explained the major changes: the removal of language about an annual membership fee that we did away with, the inclusion of member vs. non-member pricing, and the restructuring of officer positions so that the incoming officer serves as Secretary first rather than Treasurer.

Special Announcements:

 Joint Section Water Quality and PIO training on March 5th: Strategic Communication for Water Quality Issues. Located in Vancouver 9am – 4pm.  9th Annual WFP Gala at the Red Rose Ballroom March 7th.  Doug mentioned the holiday party refund letter that was sent out with the last meeting announcement. If you did not get any food at the party and would like a refund, please contact one of your Subsection officers.  Gerald Arredondo held a 50/50 raffle to raise money for the Activities Committee. Dan Applebee (City of Hillsboro) won the raffle and graciously donated his half back to the fund. $43 was raised.  Students in attendance: o Chris Norton o Tina Cichy o Emily Davis o Ian Eglitis o Ashley Holmgren o Carina Zevely o Brian Fine o All of these students (with the exception of Brian) are in need of internships! Please support our students and reach out to them if you’d like to offer positions.

Today’s Program: Meter Madness

 We had 8 participants this year! Thanks to Dan Applebee (CO Hillsboro), Ty Rada (Sunrise WA), Ian Kennedy (CO Hillsboro), David Schmidt (TVWD), Ashley Holmgren (CCC), Emily Davis (CCC), Sinclair Burr (MSA), and Zach Swartzendruber (MSA) for competing!  2nd place: Sinclair Burr with a time of 1 minute and 16 seconds.  1st place: Zach Swartzendruber at 1 minute and 11 seconds.  Congratulations to our winners and to all the competitors!

Today is the last day.  22nd annual Golf Tournament in Gresham will be on Fri July 24th  Wine for Water will be Fri August 28th in Gaston, OR  The NW OR Subsection has made the decision to partner with PNCWA for their Operator’s Conference this year. The conference will take place in November at Spirit Mountain Casino and will offer 2 CEUs in both drinking water and wastewater.  The meeting next month in Carlton will be the annual retiree appreciation event. Please let the officers know of any retirees in your organization who would like to be recognized at the meeting.  In order to streamline the posting of Constant Contact events and avoid confusion and extra fees, the officers would like to appoint one person as the point of contact for creating events in the system – Elizabeth Edgar  At the Subsection officers meeting Tuesday morning there was a discussion about the upcoming holiday party. We are hoping to hold it at Scouters Mountain again this year, but it will likely be the last year we’re able to do that as it was sold to Metro. If we need to move to a new location, there will be a lot more expense involved. We’re trying to come up with ideas to help us cover the cost of this well-loved event. We’d like you to be thinking about this too. It may be that we need to increase the cost to attend the event by another $5, but at this point we’re in the discussion phase.

 22nd annual Golf Tournament in Gresham will be on Fri July 24th. I got word this morning that there is still plenty of space in the tournament for anyone who wants to sign up. Currently ~70 golfers registered  ASR Workshop Aug 5th in Hillsboro. $75 registration before the 29th when it goes up to $100. 27 NW Oregon Subsection AWWA 2015 Annual Report

 The Oregon Operator Conference will be November 16th to 18th. It will cover topics in drinking water treatment and distribution as well as wastewater. Attendees can earn up to 2 CEUs.  The holiday party is right around the corner – Dec 18th. We’ll be doing a picture slideshow like we’ve done in past years. If you have photos from AWWA events or water projects that you’d like to share, please submit them to Kelsey.  The subsection officers met last week and discussed the December holiday party. Due to the increasing costs for this event, the fact that Scouter’s Mountain has been sold to Metro, and the extremely tight fit in Golda’s Kitchen, we’ve decided to move the party to the Monarch Hotel and Conference Center in Clackamas. This will be a big change for us, but the facility looks nice and is convenient, affordable and roomy.

It’s held at the LeMay Car Museum in Tacoma, WA. – South Sound Subsection  The holiday party is right around the corner – Dec 18th. It will be at the Monarch Hotel and Conference Center this year.  The Member Update Form is on the website. Please update your information with us if you’ve had any changes in your contact information over the last year.  The Oregon Operator Conference took place this week (Mon – Wed). There were about 100 people there. Thanks to everyone who presented and to all those who attended for CEUs. This was something new for our subsection, and we appreciate the support!  Please submit any AWWA or water-related photos that you’d like to share at the holiday party to Kelsey.  Also don’t forget to bring non-perishable foods and new, unwrapped toys to the holiday party for our food and toy drives. The Oregon Food Bank website has a list of foods they most want. A few ideas are shelf stable milk, cooking oil, and whole grains.

 We had our annual budget meeting on Oct 21. The officers and committee chairs put together a preliminary budget that we’d like to vote on at the holiday party in December. Please find the budget online and have a look at it. Let us know if you have any questions or concerns and be ready to vote next month.  Please sign up in advance to attend the holiday party this year. A constant contact link was sent out today with the meeting reminder. It will help us to accurately plan the party, and if you sign up before the 4th it will save you some money.

A five-hour workshop on Pump Operation and Pipeline Hydraulics, the basics of centrifugal pumps, motors, VFD’s, and pump selection. The Northwest Oregon AWWA YPs invites you to join us for a food recovery shift at the Oregon Food Bank!  Food recovery volunteers sort canned and boxed food donations into categories to be sent to food pantries and meal sites.  Physical requirements: o Able to lift 5 pounds o Able to stand for 3 hours o Able to read small print (food labels)  You are not required to bring anything with you, but if you do
