Ayres wrapped up the Triple Crown that day after a nocturnal tour of the stable area 12 hours early when he got out of his stall. And I'm looking forward to seeing my 49th consecutive Kentucky Futurity on October 7. The Kentucky Futurity is my favorite race because of its setting at harness racing's most historic track and because it is a trotting race that preserves the heat-racing format that true believers find the most fascinating. The Kentucky Futurity is part of the Triple Crown for trot- ters, and it and the Little Brown Jug have the most strongest ties to one track and time of year. The Hambletonian has been contested at a half-dozen tracks (including The Red Mile) since 1926, and at three tracks since the Triple Crown started. The has been at Yonkers for most of its history, but the race assuredly has lost luster. The and Messenger have become vagabonds in recent decades with no fixed date and place on the racing calendar. The Kentucky Futurity endures in Lexington, just as it has since it began in 1892. True, it was not contested a few years during World War II, but its traditions over 120 years make it special. Tradition is, after all, what makes Lexington Grand Circuit racing special. I have some old black-and-white snapshots that from family albums identified in my mother's handwriting "Lexington, 1938." Walnut Hall, and Stoner Creek. No one could walk through the stallion barn at Castleton and not come away awestruck by the horses and the magnificence of the structure. In one stall was the behemoth Speedy Scot while the Lillipu- tian Good Time was a few doors away. In later years you'd see Bret Hanover, Abercombie, and others. These stallions were royalty and they were treated that way. Many times I heard visitors remark that the horses at Castleton had a much better home than most people. Walnut Hall would show its yearlings to demonstrate their gait on a lead strip be- tween the two long yearling barns. Horse- men would gather to appraise the pros- pects as a rider on a galloping horse rode next to the yearling. Check Me Out - One and Done in Filly Futurity By Darin Zoccali Check Me Out (Donato Hanover) has been number one in the Hambletonian Society/ for over two months and rightfully so. Today, the number one took on a whole new meaning as her connections announced that his filly would race only in the first heat of the Kentucky Filly Futurity, win lose or draw, on October 7th. To win the Filly Futurity, like other multi-heat races, a filly must win two heats. Check Me Out will race in only one. Trainers not sending their horses Check Me Out will skip back for a second heat has become the finals of the more common in recent years, as Kentucky Filly Futurity was the case in this year’s Little (Lizzi photo) Brown Jug when trainer Peter Foley scratched Bolt The Duer from the second heat after getting beat in a photo finish in the first heat. Check Me Out is owned in part by and Charles Iannazzo. Iannazzo supports his trainer in this decision. “Ray and I are partners too,” Iannazzo said. “Ray is against heat racing. He told me the hardest thing he ever had to do was hitch a bike to Dewey (Deweycheatumnhowe) for the third heat of the Kentucky Futurity.” It is worth noting that Dewey lost The Breeders Crown while fighting sickness after Lexington. “After that, Ray said he would never do it again,” Iannazzo added. “But he did with Cassis, who after that was never the same again.” There is more strategy to the story however. “Obviously, we want to do what is best for the horse,” said Iannazzo. “We want to bring her back and race her lightly as a four year old before racing her in Europe at age five. In addition, we want to have her fresh for The Breeders Crown. It is so important to win your elimination and pick your post.” That is where the second part of this two-fold strategy comes into play. “Maven is our biggest rival, and she’s a great filly,” said Iannazzo. “If we can win the first heat (of the Filly Futurity), it would force Maven to go three heats for her to win it. If that happens, perhaps it would give us an edge come the HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 9/28/12 PAGE 4 of 15
