Early Pleistocene Ground Beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) 第 四 紀 研 究(The Quaternary Research) 37 (2) p. 117-129 May 1998 Early Pleistocene Ground Beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) from the Ookui Formation in Nagano Prefecture, Central Japan, and their Biogeographical and Paleoenvironmental Significance Masakazu Hayashi* Abundant fossil beetles were obtained from the Lower Pleistocene Ookui Forma- tion in Kitamimaki-mura, Kitasaku-gun, Nagano Prefecture, Central Japan. These fossils are composed of ground and aquatic beetles, such as Carabidae, Dytiscidae, Hydrophilidae, and Donaciinae of Chrysomelidae. Several fossils of ground beetles are identified with three interesting species, Hemicarabus maeander, Apotomopterus maacki, and Chlaenius gebleri. Among them, H. maeander is not distributed in Honshu where the fossil occurred, but can be found in Hokkaido, Chejudo, Sakhalin, N. E. China, Mongolia, East Siberia, and North America at the present time. The fossil finding indicates that the widely and continuous distributional range of this species seemed to become discontinuous, and extinct in Honshu after the Early Pleistocene. Thus, this species can be considered as a geographic relict species in Honshu during the Pleistocene. The paleoenvironment of the Upper member of the Ookui Formation based on beetle fossils seems that there were mainly low moor of reeds accompanied with areas of still water. These beetle assemblages, especially including H. maeander and C. gebleri, suggest presence of low moor which is similar to those found in Hokkaido during the Upper member of the Ookui Formation deposited. We identified five species under three genera belonging to 3 sub-families. These sub families are Licininae, Carabinae, Brachininae and the species are Carabus caschmirensis, Chlaenius quadricolar, Pheropsophus sobrinus, Chlaenius laticollis, and Chlaenius hamifer. Carabus cashmirensis was the most abundant species. It was followed by Chlaenius quadricolar, Pheropsophus sobrinus, Chlaenius laticollis, and Chlenius hamifer. París (**) ABSTRACT A study of morphological variation among populations from southern Spain and northwestern Africa of Rhabdotocarabus melancholicus (Fabricius, 1798) shows that there is statistical support for the recognition of three taxa: R. m. submeridionalis (Breuning, 1975) distributed over southeastern Spain, R. m. dehesicola n. ssp. from southwestern Spain and southern Portugal and R. m. melancholicus geographically res- tricted to northwestern Africa. This new arrangement changes previous biogeographic pictures for the genus, since R. m. melancholicus is not present in Europe and the range of variation observed within Iberian R. melancholicus is increased with new endemic taxa. We propose that the current differentiation among taxa is the result of successive vicariance events caused by dramatic paleogeographic changes which have occurred in the western Mediterranean region since the Mio-Pliocene boundary. CRVENI POPIS TRČAKA (CARABIDAE) HRVATSKE Crveni popis trčaka (Carabidae) izrađen je na prijedlog Državnog zavoda za zaštitu prirode. Crveni popisi raznih skupina su jedna od temeljnih stručnih podloga u zaštiti prirode (Radović 2004). Njihova je zadaća prikazati koje vrste su u opasnosti od izumiranja i koliko brzo se to može očekivati. Za izradu takvih popisa postoje određeni preduvjeti, odnosno količina znanja proizašla iz istraživanja određene skupine mora biti dostatna. ŠTO SU SVE TRČCI ? Trčci (Carabidae) su jedna od najvećih porodica kornjaša (Coleoptera). Kako je sistematika ove porodice predmet stalnih istraživanja i promjena, procjena ukupnog broja vrsta u svijetu, ali i u Europi varira kod različitih autora. Osim toga, usprkos dva stoljeća intenzivnih istraživanja, autori se još ne slažu oko toga koje sve vrste pripadaju porodici Carabidae, niti kako je ona podijeljena na niže sistematske kategorije. U najstarijim katalozima porodica Carabidae je podijeljena, većinom, samo na dvije do tri potporodice. Ti katalozi (Dejean 1831, Ganglbauer 1892, Junk & Shlenking 1926, Latreille 1802, 1810, Schaum 1850, Winkler 1924-1932) napravljeni su na temelju ondašnjih znanja, a to je u najvećoj mjeri bilo samo poznavanje i uspoređivanje morfologije odraslih jedinki. U radovima nešto novijeg datuma (Basilewski 1973, Jeannel 1941-1942) porodica trčaka promatrana je također s aspekta morfologije imaga, ali je podijeljena na veći broj, često i preko 50 potporodica. Lindroth (1961-1962) je broj potporodica smanjio na 8, ali ih je podijelio na nekoliko desetaka tribusa koji međusobno nisu ujedinjeni. Te tribuse je u supertribuse ujedinio Kryzhanovskij (1983), a tu podjelu prihvaćao je veliki broj autora.

    ON THE CARABID FAUNA OF THE PROVINCE OF GIRONA, NORTHEASTERN SPAIN (INSECTA, COLEOPTERA) Baehr, M., 1986. On the Carabid fauna of the province of Girona, northeastern Spain (Insecta, Coleoptera). Misc. Zool., 10: 161-171. On the Carabid fauna of the province of Girona, Northeastern Spain (Insecta, Coleoptera).- The Carabidae of the province of Girona are listed based on recent collectings. Severa1 of the 328 spe- cies now known from the province are firstly recorded. The faunistic components and their distri- bution is discussed. The province of Girona is inhabited by a rather large number of Central Euro- pean species, some of which occur nowhere else in the Iberian Peninsula. The Mediterranean fau- nal component is less prominent, but montane species are comparatively numerous and some ru- picolous montane species go far down the river valleys. The varied ecological conditions throug- hout the province and its position at the northern border of the Peninsula may account for the di- verse fauna, since those conditions facilitate the occurrence of northern fauna1 elements.
