Our Mission

Welcome! Are you new? Letter from our Pastor

Dear Friends in Christ,

I can’t believe it is already Sexagesima Sunday, and is only a week and a half away. Every Lent we put in the narthex a map of the city of Rome that has highlighted certain churches. When we hear stations, we tend to think of the 14 we pray during Lent. But the word statio comes from the Latin for to stand. One feature of our liturgy is that, in antiquity, the entire populace of Rome would meet the Pope wherever he was living and then pro- cess to a different church on special days for Mass, especially each of the 40 Days of Holy Lent. There they would stand, watch and pray Holy Mass as a local church. When the papacy abandoned Rome for Avignon in 1309, this custom became literally no more than a footnote in liturgical books. It was not until the 19th century that the custom of Roman Christians gathering at the ancient sta- tion church of the day was revived. The stational churches are no longer a part of the official Roman liturgical books of the Ordinary Form. But every day of Lent, the American seminarians go to the stational church for Mass at 7a; there is also a group of Italian laypeople who go to the stational church each day at 5p for Mass.

Why should we care what church the Pope used to say Mass in on each different day of Lent? The ancient lectionary readings are intimately related to the places they were proclaimed. It reminds us that the public worship of the West- ern Church is tied to historical places in the city of Rome. It brings us a great sense of connectedness to our Roman character as Catholic Christians. This year, as we journey through Lent, we want you to have the opportunity to learn more about these stational churches. There is a wonderful book you can buy at http://bit.ly/stationalchurchesofrome which goes into detail about those stational churches. It’s a great way to start your devotionals each day during this holy season. Watch out for your newsletters and social media, which will also give more information on the stational churches! You will even be able to consult what day is for which church! Check it out, and let’s learn more about our Roman Catholic faith!
