ABSTRACT The study of the life and work of one who contri buted significantly to the development of education is basic to finding the means for its further development. Edwin Lewis Stephens had a leading role in the development of education in Louisiana, especially during the years of his presidency of Southwestern"Louisiana Industrial Institute (presently the university of South western Louisiana). A wealth of materials has been available to the researcher, included in these were the Archives of Louisiana State University Library, Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Archives of the Library of the university of Southwestern Louisiana, Lafayette, Louisiana; Biennial Reports of the General Assembly of the State of Louisiana;
