Falls City (Grade II) $500,000 Falls City (Grade II) 106th Running – Thursday, Nov. 25, 2021 (Fall Meet) Fillies & Mares, 3-Year-Olds & Up at 1 1/8 Miles on Dirt at Churchill Downs Stakes Record – 1:48.85, Silent Eskimo (1999) Name Origin: The race was created by Churchill Downs founder, Col. M. Lewis Clark, as one of four stakes events that were developed for the inaugural meet in 1875. The name, Falls City, is a reference to the Ohio River falls or rapids that drop some 30 feet just west of current downtown Louisville. The falls are the reason the city grew as riverboats were forced to unload their cargo on shore before reaching the falls. Clark’s original stakes schedule included the Kentucky Derby on Monday, the Kentucky Oaks on Wednesday, the Falls City Handicap on Thursday and the Clark on closing day, Saturday. The race has been run on Thanksgiving Day since 1978. Year (Race No.) Winner (Age/Sex) Jockey (Weight) Second Time (Cond.) Sire Gross Purse-Gr. Dis. Toyota Blue Grass Stakes® (G2) Sponsored by Toyota 94th Running • Spring • 1 1/8 miles • 3-year-olds The Blue Grass Stakes was named for the Bluegrass region of Kentucky, which is characterized by grass having bluish-green culms and is known as the heart of the Thoroughbred breeding industry. First run at the Kentucky Association track in Lex- ington in 1911, the Blue Grass has, from its inception, served as an important prep for the Kentucky Derby. At the Association track, the Blue Grass was staged from 1911-1914 and 1919-1926. The race was revived at Keeneland in the spring of 1937. In 1943-1944, the Blue Grass was renewed as a part of the Keeneland-at-Churchill Downs meetings. In 1945, the Blue Grass was run as a part of the Churchill Downs meeting. He has the long, lean elegance of a classic Thoroughbred, reminiscent of his sire Colonel John and second damsire, Canadian Champion With Approval, yet Airoforce received precocious speed from his damsire Cuvee. Airoforce was victorious at distances ranging between 6 1/2-furlongs and 1 1/16-miles. Although he competed mainly on turf, Airoforce won a key stake over dirt. His immediate pedigree has dirt and turf attributes. A magnificent looking $350,00 OBS April sales purchase campaigned by John Oxley, Airoforce flashed precociousness and speed in his debut, drawing away to win a six-furlong turf sprint by 3 1/4-lengths in a sharp 1:10.34, just a second off the Kentucky Downs track record. Airoforce dominated the Dixiana Bourbon Stakes (G3) by 2 1/2-lengths over a full field of fourteen over the Keeneland turf, including Camelot Kitten, Surgical Strike. Airoforce faced a full field of high-class youngsters as the favorite in the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1). and missed the victory by a neck, after racing in traffic and being distracted in the stretch.
