Question for written answer E-005228/2020 to the Commission Rule 138 Witold Jan Waszczykowski (ECR)

Subject: Commission dishonours the national colours and symbols of

On 23 September 2020, illuminations that included national symbols of Poland were projected onto the façade of the Commission’s building in Brussels. The national coat of arms was shown against a rainbow background; the red was replaced by colours associated with LGBT activists.

Under Article 28 of the Polish Constitution,

Poland’s coat of arms is the image of a crowned white eagle against a red background, and white and red are the colours of the Republic of Poland.

The coat of arms and colours of the Republic of Poland are protected by law.

The illuminations concerned dishonoured the Polish national colours for the purpose of spreading fake news about Poland as a homophobic country with so-called ‘LGBT-free zones’, which do not exist in the Polish legal system.

In the light of the foregoing:

1. Who authorised the illuminations featuring the false Polish coat of arms?

2. Why is the Commission continuing with its false narrative about Poland?

3. Will the Commission apologise for dishonouring the Polish national emblem and the Polish national colours?
