    RADIO ROCKWAY Odalys Cordero Preface It is with great pleasure that I share a Johnny Mercer inspired unit entitled: “Radio Rockway.” This unit utilizes interdisciplinary instruction within a musical setting. The target student audience throughout the curriculum is the 5th grade student population but can easily be adapted to middle and high school level students. The unit is typically completed in approximately nine weeks if music class is taught one hour a week. This unit is designed to educate students on the history and elements of Latin Jazz while simultaneously establishing a creative environment for student to create their own lyrics. On a personal note, I enjoyed witnessing the musical growth in each 5th grade class as they used the framework of pre-existing Latin Jazz songs and lyrically “made it their own,” so to speak. This was a great opportunity for Spanish speakers at an ESOL Level of 1 & 2 level to express themselves more freely throughout the progression of the unit.     Oye Como Va was formed by Marcos Eduardo Mora Barrientos and Michael Pujado in 2017. As the musicians played crossed the Midwest and often crossed paths, they felt it was time to put together an array of talented artists that could pay tribute to the legendary artist, Carlos Santana. When Marcos approached Pujado he wanted the best percussionist in the region…and that guy was Michael Pujado from Chile. Pujado has been exposed to Latin rhythms from birth and it was naturally in his blood that brought life to his playing on the timbales and congas. Pujado has brought a true art form to Omaha in which he has accompanied artists such as Kenny G, Arturo Sandoval,Type to enter Quincy text Jones and many others. Pujado agreed to join, because Marcos’ family, musical roots started in Omaha in 1926 when his grandfather and brothers arrived and would play the local circuit for decades. So growing up around music and dance just came natural to Marcos, who eventually played in traditional Mexican/ Latin groups but then learned to play rock and soul music—he loved the guitar and his 20s he studied with Blues and R & B artists out of Kansas City and Chicago…eventually Marcos would play every major event in Omaha such as Jazz on the Green, Summer Arts Festival, Cinco de Mayo and many others—so this seemed like a better time than any to bring to Omaha a mix of talent that could portray Carlos Santana’s music. Synopsis: Born in 1947, in Autlán de Navarro, Mexico, Carlos Santana moved to San Francisco in the early 1960s, where he formed the Santana Blues Band in 1966. The band, later simply known as Santana, signed a contract with Columbia Records, with Carlos becoming the consistent front man. Throughout the 1970s and early '80s, Santana released a string of successful albums such as "Abraxas," "Lotus" and "Amigos," making a big comeback in 1999 with the Grammy Award-winning "Supernatural." In 2009, he received a Billboard Lifetime Achievement Award and several years later became a Kennedy Center Honors recipient. More recent albums have included "Corazón" and "Santana IV." Background And Early Life Musician Carlos Santana was born on July 20, 1947, in Autlán de Navarro, Mexico. His father, Jose, was an accomplished professional violinist, and as a child Carlos learned to play the instrument from his father, though he ultimately didn't enjoy the tones he created.     1 Introduction Hybridity, Identity, and Latino Popular Music ye Como Va! I selected this phrase as the main title for this book because of its exhortation to pay attention, in this instance, to the O sonic spaces that surround us and, in particular, to the rich mixture of sounds produced and consumed by U.S. Latinos. Translated as “Listen to what’s going on!” or “Listen to how it goes!”—but more succinctly as “Listen up!”—this phrase is the title of the famous song composed by the Puerto Rican mambo and salsa bandleader/percussionist Tito Puente in 1963. A veteran of New York’s glorious Latin music boom in the 1940s and 1950s, Puente borrowed the signature introduction of “Oye Como Va!” from an older piece called “Chanchullo,” composed by the Afro-Cuban bassist Israel “Cachao” López; the rest of the composition, a cha-cha, was original. Puente may not have imagined his song as being anything other than Spanish Carib- bean, but, despite its stylistic grounding in Cuba, its composer was born in New York City, raised in a multiethnic U.S. metropolis, and surrounded by an array of Latin and non-Latin styles. In 1970, a rock version of “Oye Como Va!” recorded by Carlos Santana hit number 13 on Billboard’s Top 100 chart. Unlike the U.S.-born Puente, San- tana was an immigrant, born in Mexico and raised in Tijuana before moving to San Francisco with his parents when he was an adolescent.
