Wood Burning Fireplace Permits and Policies Date: 12/28/2017 Subject: Wood Burning Fireplace Permits and Policies The Routt County Regional Building Department has put together the below information to help Routt County citizens or permit applicants understand what type of wood burning fireplaces can be installed in specific areas within the County and the process in obtaining proper permits prior to installation. 1. Protected Air Quality Area: Please view the Air Shed Map on the next page to identify where your property is located. All properties that lie within this protected Air Quality area will only be issued Mechanical Permits for wood burning fireplaces if they are EPA approved units that are on the State of Colorado’s approved list, which is also attached below. All permit applicants must submit the Make and Model number of the approved wood burning appliance with their permit application in order to obtain a mechanical permit. You will not be allowed to install a wood burning appliance in the protected Air Quality area unless it is an approved appliance on the attached list from the State of Colorado.
2. Exception: The one exception is if you currently own a “Fireplace Right” and are registered with the City of Steamboat Springs Fire Department as the legal owner of this “Firepalce Right” you may obtain a mechanical permit to install a wood burning appliance that is not an approved EPA device. However, the installation of this appliance must be installed in accordance with the adopted codes at the time of permit issuance and/or manufactures specifications.
3. All Other Areas within Routt County outside of the City of Hayden: All other areas that are served by the Routt County Regional Building Department are allowed to obtain mechanical permits for the installation of wood burning appliances, and these permits can be issued for appliances that are on the EPA approved list, and for appliances that are not on the EPA approved list. All appliances must be installed in accordance with the adopted codes at the time of permit issuance and/or manufactures specifications.
