Original wrappers, frontispiece of King Chulalogkorn in ceremonial grab carried aloft, numerous woodcut designs in the text, illustrated but not including the color lithographed plates that were featured in several 1884 versions when first published, small tear at upper-left corner of wrapper and first two leaves at head of spine, untrimmed pages.

The white elephant, the exceptionally rare albino form of the animal, was for centuries considered a priceless treasure in Southeast Asia and reserved for the possession of kings and princes. It wasn't really white, but rather had creamy or often reddish-brown skin, with pink and yellow eyes, white patches at the edge of the ears and at the top of the trunk, white toe-nails, and red hair. The white elephant was thought to provide a resting place for Buddha's soul on the long road which led from renunciation of the world to enlightenment. Bock here recounts the story of the capture of a white elephant in in 1658. His journey to northern Thailand and Laos had the support of King Chulalongkorn, to whom the book is dedicated. Most of the material that Bock collected and described in this book are now London museums, but a few items, including some bronze statues, are kept in the Ethnographic Museum in Oslo.

Three named ambassadors sent to the court of King Louis XIV with a letter from King Narai of Thailand (reigned 1657 - 1688). Adroit diplomacy, developed during this time, enabled Siam to remain independent of European colonization, the only country in Southeast Asia able to do so. It became, so far as Europe was concerned, the most consequential kingdom in Southeast Asia. The French, aided by the Greek adventurer Constantine Phaulkon who had risen to power at the Siamese court, were shortly after this visit to launch a bid for dominance in Siam that provoked an antiforeign coup. Narai was deposed and the country was closed to most foreigners for over a century. King Narai The Great of Siam reigned from 1657 to 1688 and the brilliance of his court was proverbial.

In all probability the grandest of early maps of the river and adjacent regions, its stylized, pictorial quality and its lack of uniform scale suggests that it may have been inspired by an indigenous map. It is an unusual map oriented to the East. The key at the bottom of this map lists 101 places along the river and environs. Some of which are transliterations of Thai words; others are Dutch or French names. Bangkok is marked in the accompanying key as where the western (upper) and central branches of the river emptying into the Gulf of Siam converge. Three mislabeled albumen prints of various shapes and sizes mounted on original album card. The photographs are as follows:

[1] A half-oval shaped photograph titled in script as the ‘ (115 x 158 mm). [2] A group portrait of two seated children with an adult female standing in the middle. Titled in script as ‘ (155 x 111 mm). [3] Portrait of a young boy clothed in western attire and shoes holding a cane. Titled in script as ‘ (156 x 112 mm).

Misinterpreted by the initial owner of the original album and therefore mislabeled: these photographs are not of Cambodian origin.

From the architectural design along with the distinctive finials on the roof ridges, the main purlin, eaves and the decorative panels: the first photograph clearly depicts a temple of the Central region of Siam.

In actuality the photographed labeled as the ‘ ’ is an extremely rare royal portrait of Queen Dhepsirindra (Somdetch Phra Thep Sirndara Barom Rachinee), King Mongkut’s “Queen Consort” and mother to the future King Chulalongkorn. She is shown here in mid-nineteenth century style of court dress distinctive to Siam: short hair, artfully plucked eyebrows, wearing a , which is the Royal equivalent of the traditional Siamese skirt (pleated at the waist and fastened by a belt adorned with gems).

The photographed labeled as ‘ ’ is in fact Prince Bhanurangsri Savangwongse of Siam: the fourth child of Queen Dhepsirindra and the younger brother of King Chulalongkorn. This photograph was taken after his tonsure ceremony, placing him in his early teenage years.
