My Installation Is About Female Hysteria, the Historical Prejudice
My installation is about female hysteria, the historical prejudice against uncontrollable, overly emotional, or just plain annoying women that originated from it, and the promotion of male dominance in medical fields that came as a result of it. Combined with the video, my project aims to look at how hysteria is represented in the media as well as how the increased availability of news, especially through social media, can create a culture of misinformation and a general lack of knowledge, thus leading to the creation of mass hysteria. I wrote the entire story of The Yellow Wallpaper on yellow wallpaper. I had read it many times before, but transcribing it on the wallpaper forced me to look at the story more closely. As the story progresses, the narrator seems to be swallowed up by the yellow wallpaper, and constantly moving the paper up more and more almost gave me a sense of vertigo. For the sculptural part, I wanted to show the more modern definition of hysteria which is one that forgoes the word’s medical origins and smooths it over as just another word that means overly emotional or excited, and I, therefore, decided to represent hysteria’s historical meaning as a dark mass, lurking somewhere below a swath of bright colors that obstruct the original intent of the word’s meaning. I have always questioned gender roles and wondered why women are expected to do things that men are not and vice versa. This project made me wonder why women are expected to be less active than men and clean up messes rather than make messes themselves, and it also made me wonder why men, especially in medicine, are authoritative figures that give themselves the power to belittle or dismiss women’s thoughts, feelings, and concerns. -

RISSE* I In the introduction to his History of sexuality, Michel Foucault pointed to the eighteenth century as the period in which sexuality became a medical concern and women were, in his words, subjected to "hysterization".' By this term, Foucault probably meant that medicine began to pay greater attention to female bodily functions, trying to explain anew women's behaviour and physical complaints within the prevailing theoretical frameworks of the time. Thus, Foucault's seemingly novel "medicine of hysteria" replaced traditional and popular views based on humours, vapours, and the effects of a wandering womb. In his view, this was just one aspect of the medicalization imposed on eighteenth-century life with its inherent shifts in power relationships which constitutes one of the central motifs in his writings.2 The present investigation started out as an effort to organize a rich source ofprimary clinical material: lecture notes and patient case histories from the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh during the late-eighteenth century.3 The analysis focused on hospitalized patients labelled as suffering from "hysteria", trying to document and perhaps clarify Foucault's ideas on the subject. Using such historical evidence, this study made some rather unexpected discoveries. It not only exposed the ambiguities inherent in the construction of disease entities, but also refuted Foucault's account of the sexualization ofworking-class women, at least for late-eighteenth-century Edinburgh. Before presenting the archival data, however, it will be useful briefly to consider the views regarding women's health and especially hysteria prevalent in the medical literature during the latter part of the eighteenth century. -

Specifically, I analyze Cronenberg’s monstrous Mother, Nola Carveth, within the role of the family in the 1970s, when the patriarchal, nuclear family is under question in American society. In his essay The American Nightmare: Horror in the 70s critic Robin Wood began a debate surrounding Cronenberg’s early films, namely accusing the director of reactionary misogyny and calling for a political critique of his and other horror director’s work. The debate which followed has sidestepped The Brood, disregarding it as a complication to his oeuvre due to its autobiographical basis. This film, however, offers an opportunity to apply Wood’s call for political criticism to portrayals of hysteria in contemporary visual culture; this thesis takes up this call and fills an important interpretive gap in the scholarship surrounding gender in Cronenberg’s early films. iii This thesis is dedicated to my family for believing in me, supporting me and not traumatizing me too much along the way. -

Female Hysteria: The Social Epidemic Samantha Franco A note on the author: Samantha Franco is a fourth-year student at the University of Guelph, currently working towards her undergraduate degree in Honours History. Her passion for women’s history is a driving force behind her research, and she hopes to complete her Masters at Western University in her hometown of London, Ontario. Science has continuously been an unforgiving field for women. Ignored through most of its existence, women have had little to no identity in psychiatry. When they finally were considered worthy of analysis, they were demonized under the foundation of emotional irrationality. The Victorian era of the nineteenth century is an excellent case study in the understanding of the medical oppression of women. During a time of intense and fragile male-female relationships, this period brought with it one of the most influential diseases of female institutionalization: hysteria. In this regard, hysteria served a purpose outside of a scientific context. In the community, hysteria acted as a platform for maintaining male dominance within a drastic power imbalance. It suppressed women, satisfied male insecurities about the female body, and inadvertently vied for the conforming of Victorian gender norms. Jean-Martin Charcot himself manipulated his findings to fit into the social understanding of male and female roles, popularizing his theories and his reputation alongside a dramatically shifting Western society. Hysteria became the scapegoat of unexplainable or uncontrollable female behaviour. The male community was supported at this time by the male-dominant field of science in isolating women for their radical misbehaviour. -

From the socially conservative 1950s to the permissive 1970s, this project explores the ways in which insanity in women has been linked to their femininity and the expression or repression of their sexuality. An analysis of films from Hollywood’s post-classical period (The Three Faces of Eve (1957), Lizzie (1957), Lilith (1964), Repulsion (1965), Images (1972) and 3 Women (1977)) demonstrates the societal tendency to label a woman’s behavior as mad when it does not fit within the patriarchal mold of how a woman should behave. In addition to discussing the social changes and diagnostic trends in the mental health profession that define “appropriate” female behavior, each chapter also traces how the decline of the studio system and rise of the individual filmmaker impacted the films’ ideologies with regard to mental illness and femininity. Textual Ghosts: Sidney, Shakespeare, and the Elizabethans in Caroline England Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Rachel Ellen Clark, M.A. English Graduate Program The Ohio State University 2011 Dissertation Committee: Richard Dutton, Advisor Christopher Highley Alan Farmer Copyright by Rachel Ellen Clark 2011 Abstract This dissertation argues that during the reign of Charles I (1625-42), a powerful and long-lasting nationalist discourse emerged that embodied a conflicted nostalgia and located a primary source of English national identity in the Elizabethan era, rooted in the works of William Shakespeare, Sir Philip Sidney, John Lyly, and Ben Jonson. This Elizabethanism attempted to reconcile increasingly hostile conflicts between Catholics and Protestants, court and country, and elite and commoners. Remarkably, as I show by examining several Caroline texts in which Elizabethan ghosts appear, Caroline authors often resurrect long-dead Elizabethan figures to articulate not only Puritan views but also Arminian and Catholic ones. This tendency to complicate associations between the Elizabethan era and militant Protestantism also appears in Caroline plays by Thomas Heywood, Philip Massinger, and William Sampson that figure Queen Elizabeth as both ideally Protestant and dangerously ambiguous. Furthermore, Caroline Elizabethanism included reprintings and adaptations of Elizabethan literature that reshape the ideological significance of the Elizabethan era. The 1630s quarto editions of Shakespeare’s Elizabethan comedies The Merry Wives of Windsor, The Taming of the Shrew, and Love’s Labour’s Lost represent the Elizabethan era as the source of a native English wit that bridges social divides and negotiates the ii roles of powerful women (a renewed concern as Queen Henrietta Maria became more conspicuous at court). -

American Physicians’ Earliest Writings about Homosexuals, 1880—1900 BERT HANSEN Research Foundation o f The City University o f New York NLY IN THE LAST THIRD OF THE NINETEENTH century did European and American physicians begin to pub Olish case reports of people who participated in same-sex ac tivity. In 1869 the Archiv fiir Psychiatrie und Nervenkrankheiten in Berlin published the very first medical case report o f a homosexual (Westphal 1869), with six more cases following quickly in the German psy chiatric literature. A French report appeared in 1876 and an Italian one in 1878. The first American case report appeared in 1879, the second in 1881, and in the latter year the British journal Brain offered an entry, though that report’s subject was German and the reporting physician Viennese. (British physicians seem to have been rather ret icent on this subject through the 1890s.) The years 1882 and 1883 saw several major American contributions to the literature on homo sexuals, by which time nearly twenty European cases had been re ported. These persons were variously described as exhibiting “sexual inversion,” “ contrary sexual instinct,” or “ sexual perversion,” though this last term was not common in the narrow sense and usually referred to a wider range of sexual possibilities. By the century’s end, the medical literature on the subject was large and growing fast, with dozens of American contributions and considerably more in Europe. But just how historically accurate is it? Surprisingly close. As historian Rachel P. Maines points out in her book "The Technology of Orgasm (http://www.powells.com/biblio/108018664645) ," the symptoms of "hysteria"—a catchall diagnosis for French pelvic douche of about 1860 from Fleury, reproduced from Siegfried Giedion, Mechanization a slew of vexing lady problems that dates back a Takes Command (New York: Oxford University Press, couple millennia—included fainting, anxiety, 1948) sleeplessness, irritability, nervousness and "a tendency to cause trouble for others." (Two other symptoms suspiciously associated with hysteria? Erotic fantasy and excessive vaginal lubrication.) And since at least the second century, a good orgasm, or rather "hysterial paroxysm," was considered a suitable treatment—at least when practiced by a medical professional. -

Jnl of Ecclesiastical History, Vol. 55, No. 4, October 2004. f 2004 Cambridge University Press 654 DOI: 10.1017/S0022046904001502 Printed in the United Kingdom Episcopal Tombs in Early Modern England by PETER SHERLOCK The Reformation simultaneously transformed the identity and role of bishops in the Church of England, and the function of monuments to the dead. This article considers the extent to which tombs of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century bishops represented a set of episcopal ideals distinct from those conveyed by the monuments of earlier bishops on the one hand and contemporary laity and clergy on the other. It argues that in death bishops were increasingly undifferentiated from other groups such as the gentry in the dress, posture, location and inscriptions of their monuments. As a result of the inherent tension between tradition and reform which surrounded both bishops and tombs, episcopal monuments were unsuccessful as a means of enhancing the status or preserving the memory and teachings of their subjects in the wake of the Reformation. etween 1400 and 1700, some 466 bishops held office in England and Wales, for anything from a few months to several decades.1 The B majority died peacefully in their beds, some fading into relative obscurity. Others, such as Richard Scrope, Thomas Cranmer and William Laud, were executed for treason or burned for heresy in one reign yet became revered as saints, heroes or martyrs in another. The invention of sexuality Véronique Mottier*1 Sex is a cultural object. We tend to think of sexuality as a natural force, driven by biological instincts, and as a “private” experience – perhaps as private as it gets. In contrast, I will argue in this chapter that, just as the differences between men and women cannot be reduced to biological factors alone but are more adequately under- stood in terms of the concept of “gender” which takes into account the social meanings that different societies attach to masculinity and femininity, sexuality is not a natural, biological and universal experi- ence. Nor is it a purely “private” matter. The ways in which different cultures and different time periods have made sense of erotic plea- sures and dangers vary widely. Sexuality is shaped by social and politi- cal forces (including state policies), and connects in important ways to relations of power around class, race, and, especially, gender. -

THE HISTORY OF PARLIAMENT TRUST Review of activities in the year 2011-12 July 2012 - 1 - Objectives and Activities of the History of Parliament Trust The History of Parliament is a major academic project to create a scholarly reference work describing the members, constituencies and activities of the Parliament of England and the United Kingdom. The volumes either published or in preparation cover the House of Commons from 1386 to 1868 and the House of Lords from 1660 to 1832. They are widely regarded as an unparalleled source for British political, social and local history. The volumes consist of detailed studies of elections and electoral politics in each constituency, and of closely researched accounts of the lives of everyone who was elected to Parliament in the period, together with surveys drawing out the themes and discoveries of the research and adding information on the operation of Parliament as an institution. The History has published 21,420 biographies and 2,831 constituency surveys in ten sets of volumes (41 volumes in all). They deal with 1386-1421, 1509-1558, 1558-1603, 1604-29, 1660-1690, 1690-1715, 1715-1754, 1754-1790, 1790-1820 and 1820-32. All of these volumes save those most recently published (1604-29) are now available on www.historyofparliamentonline.org . The History’s staff of professional historians is currently researching the House of Commons in the periods 1422-1504, 1640-1660, and 1832-1868, and the House of Lords in the periods 1603-60 and 1660-1832. The three Commons projects currently in progress will contain a further 7,251 biographies of members of the House of Commons and 861 constituency surveys.
