    FROM THE ARCHIVES: HANS HOFMANN: THE PEDAGOGICAL MASTER By Irving Sandler May 30, 1973 Irving Sandler died on June 2, 2018 at the age of 92. A frequent contributor to A.i.A., Sandler was best known for chronicling the rise and the aftermath of Abstract Expressionism. One of his most significant articles for A.i.A., the impact of Hans Hofmann, who taught such artists as Helen Frankenthaler and Allan Kaprow, thereby influencing not only second- and third-generation Ab Ex painters but other developments in American art after 1945. Sandler highlights Hofmann’s interest in the deep traditions of European art, and his belief that the best abstract painting continues its manner of modeling the world. “It was in this cubic quality, this illusion of mass and space, that the man-centered humanist tradition—or what could be saved of it—was perpetuated,” Sandler wrote, summarizing a central tenet of Hofmann’s teachings. The full essay, from our May/June 1973 issue, is presented below. In June we re-published Sandler’s essay “The New Cool-Art,” on the rise of Minimalism. —Eds. As both a painter and a teacher Hans Hofmann played a germinal part in the development of advanced American art for more than thirty years. This article will deal only with his pedagogical role—a topic chosen with some trepidation, for to treat an artist as a teacher is often thought to demean his stature as an artist. The repute of Hofmann’s painting has suffered in the past because of this bias, but no longer, since he is now firmly and deservedly established as a pathfinding master of Abstract Expressionism.

Some versions are the same; a lot of them are conflicting and contradicting, but basically they all add up to a lot of ambition and drive. A life lived between a text of excess and the real turns of a hard life is a tough one to straddle. All I know for sure is what I saw. The boys worked hard, studied hard, and tried to live as hard as they could. Like every other summer in Provincetown, things got slow and scary for out-of-towners after Labor Day hit. I saw Mark and Jonathan when they came back from P-town at a party at 11th Hour Gallery, the loft I lived in with some friends. Mark followed me into my room and shut the door behind himself, turning off the lights and cackling. Immediately the ste- reo emitted a brutal abortive screech. In his at- tempt to scare me, Mark had stepped on the turntable and destroyed it. He was so repentant. Mark, the punk, begging my forgiveness. Mark, sweet boy with a bad leg, offering me money to fix things-could this be real? This is the way I remember him best, yet in his next breath he was hurting my feelings, full of s_notty disdain for those of us rotting in Boston while he was moving on. A few weeks later, we had an open- ing at the loft of paintings by Stephen and my boyfriend at the time, Tony Millionaire.

This dissertation is the first survey of a group of painters working in this mode, all born around the 1920s and living in New York. Several, though not all, were students of Hans Hofmann; most knew one another; some were close friends or colleagues as art teachers. I highlight nine artists: Rosemarie Beck (1923-2003), Leland Bell (1922-1991), Nell Blaine (1922-1996), Robert De Niro (1922-1993), Paul Georges (1923-2002), Albert Kresch (b. 1922), Mercedes Matter (1913-2001), Louisa Matthiasdottir (1917-2000), and Paul Resika (b. 1928). This group of artists has been marginalized in standard art historical surveys and accounts of the period.

I've never used John. PAUL CUMMINGS: You were born in Colorado? Did you grow up there? ROBERT BEAUCHAMP: I grew up there until I was 19 then went to art school in Colorado Springs. PAUL CUMMINGS: You went to primary school, high school? ROBERT BEAUCHAMP: Right. In high school I had too many study halls and decided to take art. Everybody told me I could draw, so I took this class and became interested. There was a teacher I liked very much. R. Idris Thomas. He's long since dead. He was a Welshman who was very enthusiastic and had been to Paris and kindled my interest in painting. PAUL CUMMINGS: Did you make drawings at home as a child? ROBERT BEAUCHAMP: As I child, yes, but say from six to seven o'clock, say, from six to sixteen, I didn't do much.

    CONTEMPORARY ART The Library of Coosje van Bruggen / Claes Oldenburg projected to be circa 2,500 volumes Partial catalogue June 8, 2018 The Library of Coosje van Bruggen and Claes Oldenburg A towering figure in postwar American art, whose influence, from the start of Pop Art to the present day, has been profound, and whose unmistakable style is instantly recognizable around the world, Claes Oldenburg needs no introduction. His wife and collaborator, the Dutch-American scholar and artist Coosje van Bruggen (1942-2009) had a distinguished career as both a critic and curator of contemporary art, and a widely admired sculptor. Working together over the course of three decades, Oldenburg and van Bruggen produced a series of monumental sculptures, which she termed "Large-Scale Projects," that are among the most iconic of recent years. Their library is a perfect reflection of their work and their interests, with extensive resources on the movements of modern and contemporary art, from Pop and Happenings, Fluxus, Arte Povera, Minimal Art, Conceptual Art, and Land Art, to the developments of the new millenium. In addition to its depth in reference books, the library includes rare historic exhibition catalogues and books of early Minimal and Conceptual art (the publications of Seth Siegelaub, and exceedingly scarce publications from Vancouver and Oberlin, as well as the landmark shows of the 1960s and 1970s), rare periodicals ("Interfunktionen"), and classic source works inscribed by the authors, together with a rich selection of valuable original artists' books, by Carl Andre, John Baldessari, Stanley Brouwn, Hanne Darboven, Peter Downsbrough, Jenny Holzer, Rebecca Horn, Joseph Kosuth, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, Gerhard Richter, Carolee Schneemann, Emmett Williams, and numerous others.
