Views on the Rapture and Millennium (A Brief Overview)

The Millennium: the following views deal with the relationship between the return of Christ and the 1000-year period depicted in Revelation 20 Amillennialism: this view identifies the period depicted in Revelation 20 as a symbol of Christ’s spiritual reign in heaven. The return of Christ is at the end of history (no millennial kingdom on earth) Postmillennialism: the millennium (a period of peace) is ushered in through the spread of the gospel and advancement of God’s kingdom on earth, and Christ returns after the millennium is finished Premillennialism: the return of Christ begins the millennium, and Christ reigns on earth (for either a literal 1000 years or a very long period of time)

The Rapture: the following views deal with the relationship of the rapture (the event where believers are taken to be with Christ) and the tribulation Pre-tribulational rapture: believers in Christ are caught up to be with Christ prior to the tribulation Mid-tribulational rapture: believers in Christ are caught up to be with Christ at the midpoint of the tribulation Pre-wrath rapture: believers in Christ are caught up during the tribulation before the final pouring out of God’s wrath Post-tribulation rapture: believers in Christ are caught up to meet Christ as he returns (at the end of the tribulation)

Reflection Questions Revelation 20 In Revelation 20, John depicts the final defeat of Satan. Although Satan is depicted as an enemy of God’s people now (see 1 Peter 5:8–9), we see that his defeat is certain. • As you face the trials and temptations of life, how can this shape your perspective? • How can this provide hope when evil so often seems to prevail in this world?

Revelation 21–22 In Revelation 21–22, John depicts the New Heavens and New Earth. As mentioned in the lecture, many think of heaven simply as floating on clouds and playing harps. John gives a different perspective as he describes the descent of the heavenly city to the new earth. • One of the key features of the heavenly city is the presence of God throughout the New Jerusalem. Is this an encouraging or intimidating thought? How does recognizing our full freedom from the presence of sin affect your perspective? • What are some practical ways to grow in anticipation of what lies ahead? How can we live life wisely as we long for His coming?
