The End Times
The End Times Today, more than any other time in history, events are being played out on the world stage that will bring an end to our current times. These are more commonly referred to as The End Times or The Last Days. World events such as the rebirth of Israel in 1948 and the regathering of the Jewish people back into the land, conflicts and tensions in the Middle East, an increase of wickedness and evil, an increase of knowledge, nations that are blatantly anti-Israel and the instability of Russia as well as economic and technological advances that make possible events described in the Bible, that 100 years ago would have been inconceivable. These signs exhort us to be like the five wise virgins in (Matthew 25:1-13) that kept theirs lamps full and their wicks trimmed as they waited and watched for their Lords return. Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for not discerning the times (Matthew 16:1-3) and to the disciples He spoke the parable of the fig tree about discerning the times (Luke 21:29-33). Let’s take a closer look at some of the signs that point to the soon coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We see leaps in technological advances such as nuclear missile strike capability and satellite technologies that allow us to see real time events halfway around the world which were impossible one-hundred years ago. Calls for a global economic system, a “world currency” and a one world government also demonstrate that we are closer to the end times then ever before. -

Chapter 1 The City: The New Jerusalem “I saw the holy city, the New Jerusalem” (Revelation 21:2). These words from the final book of the Bible set out a vision of heaven that has captivated the Christian imagina- tion. To speak of heaven is to affirm that the human long- ing to see God will one day be fulfilled – that we shall finally be able to gaze upon the face of what Christianity affirms to be the most wondrous sight anyone can hope to behold. One of Israel’s greatest Psalms asks to be granted the privilege of being able to gaze upon “the beauty of the Lord” in the land of the living (Psalm 27:4) – to be able to catch a glimpse of the face of God in the midst of the ambiguities and sorrows of this life. We see God but dimly in this life; yet, as Paul argued in his first letter to the Corinthian Christians, we shall one day see God “face to face” (1 Corinthians 13:12). To see God; to see heaven. From a Christian perspective, the horizons defined by the parameters of our human ex- istence merely limit what we can see; they do not define what there is to be seen. Imprisoned by its history and mortality, humanity has had to content itself with pressing its boundaries to their absolute limits, longing to know what lies beyond them. Can we break through the limits of time and space, and glimpse another realm – another dimension, hidden from us at present, yet which one day we shall encounter, and even enter? Beale's latest commentary on Revelation and Kim Riddlebarger's new book A Casefor Ami~~ennialismhave renewed interest in the debate on the nature of the millennium.' Amillennialism has an illustrious history of support from Augustine, theologians of the Calvinistic and ~utheran confessions, and a long line of Reformed theologians such as Abraham Kuyper, Amin Vos, H. Ridderbos, A. A. Hoekema, and M. G. line? Amillennialists recognize that a straightforward reading of the text seems to show "the chronologicalp'ogression of Rev 19-20, the futurity of Satan's imprisonment,the physicality of 'the first resurrection' and the literalness of the one thousand years" (emphasis supplied).) However, they do not accept a chronologicalprogression of the events in these chapters, preferring instead to understand the events as recapitulatory. Their rejection of the natural reading of the text is driven by a hermeneutic of strong inaugurated eschatology4-the paradox that in the Apocalypse divine victory over the dragon and the reign of Christ and his church over this present evil world consist in participating with Christ in his sufferings and death? Inaugurated eschatology emphasizes Jesus' victory over the powers of evil at the cross. Since that monumental event, described so dramatically in Rev 12, Satan has been bound and the saints have been reigning (Rev 20). From the strong connection between the two chapters (see Table 1 below) they infer that Rev 20 recapitulates Rev 12. -

Brisby; 4-6-2002 This afternoon, brethren, we want to start to wind down this rather long series that I've been completing on number sixteen of the Fundamentals of Belief of the Church of God, The Eternal. As you know, this is the fundamental that relates primarily to the topic we call British Israelism. It was one of those fundamental teachings that Mr. Armstrong did confirm as a means for us to understand the way to put into perspective many of the prophecies that are written within the Bible. Mr. Armstrong called it a key to understanding Biblical prophecy. As I've repeated a number of times during the last seven sermons, that is not to be confused with thinking that it is the most important doctrine of the Church. It certainly is not. Herbert Armstrong certainly did not originate the understanding of the topic of the lost tribes of Israel and the role of the United States, the British Commonwealth and the other democracies of Northwestern Europe as those descendants of the ancient Israelites. That was not new information, but Mr. Armstrong certainly capitalized upon it because God led him to understand that it was indeed true. Therefore, it had significance for us in understanding the context of many of the Biblical prophecies concerning Israel, both in ancient times and, most importantly, in the last days. So it did become a key. It opened up much understanding to us. So we've gone through in a synoptic fashion, and yet it's taken a number of sermons to cover the details of our understanding from the Bible of that which God promised through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and David, and a certification that God did indeed fulfill His promises to those patriarchs, which is the main purpose for which I have spent so much time on this topic. -

Study Guide Week 7 Andrew Butterworth Ch 19-21: The Seven Wilderness Visions Figure 1 Jesus leading a heavenly calvary on a white horse fter seeing the fall of the prostitute in the wilderness, John remains in the wilderness and sees seven further visions. The first vision is that of a glorified Jesus in conquering- A mode, riding a white horse and leading a heavenly calvary. John then sees the aftermath of the Battle of Armageddon with carcassess all around. The Beast and the False Prophet are captured and thrown into the Lake of Fire. A heavenly angel then opens the Bottomless AByss and Satan, in the form of the dragon, is thrown into it and Bound for a millenium. Meanwhile Jesus and his martyrs reign. After the one thousand years has ended Satan is released and prepares a great Battle, the Battle of Gog and Magog. But this Battle is over pretty quickly as fire from heaven consumes the opposing armies and Satan is sent to join the Beast and the False Prophet in the Lake of Fire. After this, the great white throne is Brought out and Judgment Day occurs. The final vision of the seven mini-visions introduces the next chapter: the New Jerusalem descends down from heaven and resides on a newly-made earth. The dwelling of God is now truly again with man. Eden has Been restored. Contrasted against this are the people who are excluded from New Jerusalem and instead are found with the Dragron, the Beast and the False Prophet in the Lake of Fire. -

Racist Apocalypse: Millennialism on the Far Right Michael Barkun For the last quarter-century, America has been saturated with apocalyptic themes. Indeed, not since the 1830sand '40s haveso many visions oftheendbeen disseminated to so wide an audience.1 Current apocalyptic scenarios range from secular forecasts of nuclear war and environmental collapse, articulated by Robert Heilbroner and others, to the Biblically-based premillennialism of Hal Lindsey and Jerry Falwell.2 While the former have spread widely among secular intellectuals, and the latter among a large fundamentalist audience, they do not exhaust America's preoccupation with the end of history. There are other future visions, neither so respectable nor so widely held, at the fringes of American religious and political discourse. While these outer reaches of the American mind are filled with many complex growths, my concern here is with one form the fringe apocalypse has taken, as part of the ideology of the racist right. These are the groups customarily referred to in the media as "white supremacist" and "neo-Nazi." While they are uniformly committed to doctrines of racial superiority and are often open admirers of the Third Reich, to categorize them merely as "white supremacist" or "neo-Nazi" is simplistic, for these organizations bear little resemblance to earlier American fringe-right manifestations.3 The groups most representative of the new tendencies include Aryan Nations in Hayden Lake, Idaho; the now-defunct Covenant, Sword and Arm of the Lord, whose fortified community was located near Pontiac, Missouri, until 1985; and most elements of the Ku Klux Klan and Posse Comitatus. -

THE NEW JERUSALEM (Rev. 21-22) Introduction One of the most precious promises we have is the one Jesus gave us in John 14:1-3: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (NIV) We talk about going to Heaven when we die, and we will, but Scripture tells us that we won’t be there for long and that Heaven will not be our eternal home. The Eschatology of the Dead Sea Scrolls J. Randall Price, Ph.D. Center for Judaic Studies Liberty University [email protected] Recent unrest in the Middle East regularly stimulates discussion on the eschatological interpretation of events within the biblical context. In light of this interest it is relevant to consider the oldest eschatological interpretation of biblical texts that had their origin in the Middle East – the Dead Sea Scrolls. This collection of some 1,000 and more documents that were recovered from caves along the northwestern shores of the Dead Sea in Israel, has become for scholars of both the Old and New Testaments a window into Jewish interpretation in the Late Second Temple period, a time known for intense messianic expectation. The sectarian documents (non-biblical texts authored by the Qumran Sect or collected by the Jewish Community) among these documents are eschatological in nature and afford the earliest and most complete perspective into the thinking of at least one Jewish group at the time of Jesus’ birth and the formation of the early church. -

THE BIBLE DISPROVES THE MYTH OF THE 'LOST TEN TRIBES' I regularly get asked about the 'Lost tribes of Israel' when I am speaking in different nations, and find that many believers are confused, and some even think they are members of a lost tribe! Although some Jewish people were, no doubt, lost in their dispersion around the world through the ages, we need to understand that the Jewish people today are descended from all twelve tribes, with clear biblical evidence, so as to avoid confusion. In order to bring clarity to this matter, I am referencing the writings of Bob (Raymond Robert) Fischer, who was a much loved and respected fellow Messianic Jewish believer and Bible teacher, who went to be with the Lord a few years ago. I am drawing from his book entitled 'Full Circle.' Fischer states (pages 276 – 278): 'I am confident that any honest and objective study of the Scriptures would reveal that beliefs in the so called ‘Two House Theology’ (believing that the Jews are only from Judah, and that Israel / ten tribes were all lost, and therefore not Jewish) would not have emerged to be foisted upon the spiritually starved and vulnerable legions of Gentile Christians who constitute the majority of the Church.' To add some clarity to Fischer’s quote, it seems that many Christians are not content with their salvation and identity, or are, as Fischer states, 'spiritually starved,' causing some to seek to identify themselves as a member of a lost tribe of Israel. Fischer lists some of the most compelling biblical verses that disprove the teaching that Jewish people today are only descended from the tribe of Judah. -

One important phase of God’s kingdom program is the millennium. The position argued here is that the millennial kingdom of Christ is earthly and future from our standpoint in history. The millennium is not being fulfilled today but will follow certain events such as worldwide tribulation, cosmic signs, the rescue of God’s people, and judgment of the nations. This view of the millennium is found in both testaments of the Bible. The Old Testament tells of an intermediate era that is different from both our present age and the coming eternal state. The New Testament then tells us how long this intermediate period will be—one thousand years. ***** Introduction Revelation 20 tells of a kingdom reign of Jesus Christ that lasts for one thousand years. Yet the nature of this kingdom and when the reign of Jesus the Messiah occurs have been major issues of debate. The purpose of this article is to address both the nature and the timing of the one thousand-year reign of Christ or what is commonly called the “millennium.” We will argue that the millennium of Revelation 20 is an earthly kingdom that is established by Jesus after His second coming to earth. Thus, the millennium is both earthly and future from our standpoint in history.1 This millennial and messianic kingdom of Christ follows certain events—a unique period of tribulation and distress for Israel, peril for dwellers of the earth, cosmic signs, the rescue of God’s people, and judgment of the nations. -
