  • English-Language Graphic Narratives in Canada
Drawing on the Margins of History: English-Language Graphic Narratives in Canada by Kevin Ziegler A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfilment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2013 © Kevin Ziegler 2013 Author’s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This study analyzes the techniques that Canadian comics life writers develop to construct personal histories. I examine a broad selection of texts including graphic autobiography, biography, memoir, and diary in order to argue that writers and readers can, through these graphic narratives, engage with an eclectic and eccentric understanding of Canadian historical subjects. Contemporary Canadian comics are important for Canadian literature and life writing because they acknowledge the importance of contemporary urban and marginal subcultures and function as representations of people who occasionally experience economic scarcity. I focus on stories of “ordinary” people because their stories have often been excluded from accounts of Canadian public life and cultural history. Following the example of Barbara Godard, Heather Murray, and Roxanne Rimstead, I re- evaluate Canadian literatures by considering the importance of marginal literary products. Canadian comics authors rarely construct narratives about representative figures standing in place of and speaking for a broad community; instead, they create what Murray calls “history with a human face . the face of the daily, the ordinary” (“Literary History as Microhistory” 411).

Drawn & Quarterly: Twenty-Five Years of Contemporary Cartooning, Comics, and Graphic Novels is a six hundred- page thank-you letter to the cartoonists whose steadfast belief in a Canadian micro-publisher never wavered. In 1989, a prescient Chris Oliveros created D+Q with a simple mandate–to publish the world’s best cartoonists. Thanks to his taste-making visual acumen and the sup- port of over fifty cartoonists from the past two decades, D+Q has grown from an annual stapled anthology into one of the world’s leading graphic novel publishers. With hundreds of pages of comics by Drawn & Quarterly cartoonists, D+Q: 25 features new work by Kate Beaton, Chester Brown, Michael DeForge, Tom Gauld, Miriam Katin, Rutu Modan, James Sturm, Jillian Tamaki, Yoshihiro Tatsumi alongside rare and never-before- seen work from Guy Delisle, Debbie Dreschler, Julie Doucet, John Porcellino, Art Spiegelman, and Adrian Tomine. Editor Tom Devlin digs into the company archives for rare photographs, correspondence, and comics; assembles biographies, personal reminiscences, and interviews with key D+Q staff; and curates essays by Margaret Atwood, Daniel Handler, Sheila Heti, Jonathan Lethem, Deb Olin-Unferth, Heather O’Neill, Chris Ware, and noted comics scholars. D+Q: 25 is the rare chance to witness a literary movement in progress; how a group of dedicated artists and their publisher changed the future of a century-old medium.

  • Jillian Tamaki Supermutant Magic Academy
SPRING 2015 DRAWN & QUARTERLY JILLIAN TAMAKI SUPERMUTANT MAGIC ACADEMY JILLIAN TAMAKI SUPERMUTANT MAGIC ACADEMY UNREQUITED LOVE, UNDERAGE DRINKING, AND TEEN ANGST RULE AT A HIGH SCHOOL FOR MUTANTS AND WITCHES New York Times and New Yorker illustrator Jillian Tamaki is best known for co-creating the award-winning young adult graphic novels Skim and This One Summer–moody and atmospheric best- sellers. SuperMutant Magic Academy, which Jillian has been serial- izing online for the past four years, paints a teenage world filled with just as much ennui and uncertainty, but also with a sharp dose of humor and irreverence. Jillian deftly plays superhero and high school Hollywood tropes against what adolescence is really like: the SuperMutant Magic Academy is a prep-school for mutants and witches but their paranormal abilities take a back seat to everyday teen concerns. Science experiments go awry, bake sales are upstaged, and the new kid at school is a cat who will determine the course of human destiny. Whether the magic is mundane or miraculous, Jillian’s jokes are precise and devastating. SuperMutant Magic Academy has won two Ignatz Awards. This volume combines the most popular content from the webcomic with a selection of all-new, never-before-seen strips that conclude Jillian’s account of life at the Academy. PRAISE FOR SUPERMUTANT MAGIC ACADEMY “SuperMutant Magic Academy is…not just weird, it’s oftentimes so completely bonkers and out-there that it leaves you a little shell-shocked. And believe me, that is a huge, huge compliment.”—Autostraddle Jillian Tamaki is a Canadian illustrator and cartoonist currently living in Brooklyn, NY.

  • Canadian Cartoonists, Comics, and Graphic Novels
H-PCAACA CFP: The Canadian Alternative: Canadian Cartoonists, Comics, and Graphic Novels Discussion published by Daniel Fandino on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 We seek previously unpublished essays addressing Canadian cartoonists/comics. Our primary interest is in "alternative" cartoonists and cartooning, narrowly defined; that is, figures associated with the underground, independent, and/or ground-level comics movements. Figures of key interest might include but are not limited to Marc Bell David Boswell Chester Brown Scott Chantler David Collier Julie Doucet Rand Holmes Jeff Lemire (especially his independent work) Bernie Mireault Bryan Lee O'Malley Dave Sim Seth However, and as the inclusion of Lemire above indicates, we are also interested in papers dealing with the Canadian "alternative" more broadly-defined, whether represented by the visions of specific creators who have worked in mainstream comics (Byrne, Dan and Gene Day, Lemire, McFarland, etc.) or by Canadian alternatives to mainstream US comics publishing (e.g. the Canadian "whites" of World War Two), the various attempts to create a Canadian market/national hero (perhaps best represented by Richard Comely and Comely Comics's Captain Canuck), and other distinctly Canadian takes on the graphic medium (e.g. Martin Vaughan-James's The Cages, or BP Nicholls's use of comics/cartooning). Substantial essays (5,000-8,000 words) focusing on specific creators, comparing/contrasting the work of a few creators, or addressing Canadian movements in comics are welcome. Submit completed papers by April 30 2015 to Dominick Grace [email protected]( ) and/or Eric Hoffman ([email protected]). Dominick Grace and Eric Hoffman are also the editors of Dave Sim: Conversations, Chester Brown: Conversations, and Seth: Conversations for the University Press of Mississippi.

Introduction* Chris Reyns-Chikuma and Gail de Vos University of Alberta Recent comic book scholarship has examined the influence of comic books and 5 comics culture in various countries and regional areas other than the three big tradi- tions (US, Japan, and France-Europe). Comics and the US South (2012), and various essays on cultural identity in Québec, Scotland and other countries in Comics as a Nexus of Cultures: Essays on the Interplay of Media, Disciplines and International Perspectives (2010), are two examples. Jason Dittmer reflected on Canadian super- heroes in regards to Captain America in his Captain America and the Nationalist Superhero: Metaphors, Narratives, and Geopolitics (2013),1 in which he demonstrated how Captain America and Captain Canuck embodied a nation-state but neglected to address issues of multiculturalism. Bart Beaty, one of the most prominent Canadian comics scholars, preceded Dittmer’s analysis on the topic in 2006 with “The Fighting Civil Servant: Making Sense of the Canadian Superhero,” in which he concluded, “It is clear that the overt nationalism of Canadian superheroes in their contemporary era had as much to do with frustrations over sustaining a viable Canadian comics publishing industry [against the overwhelming American comics tradition and mass media power] as it did with representational issues of Canadian identity” (“Fighting Civil Servant” 438). In this introduction, we will first give a brief overview of the scholarship on Canadian comics, and then look at the individual essays, mainly focused

The concept for Conundrum Press was born in a shack somewhere in north- ern BC, buried in a conversation about the end of my treeplanting career. It was summer 1995 and I had just finished an MA in English from Concordia University, travelled the world, done seven tours of duty in the bush to pay for it all, and was pondering my next move. “It’s a real conundrum,” I said. The planter across the table from me lost his soup. He had never heard the word “conundrum” before and thought it was hilarious. Later, when I was living back in post-referendum Mile End Montreal paying barely anything in rent, looking to write and make chapbooks for my friends, the word came up again. In the spring of 1996 I hosted a launch at a loft for a handmade book and cassette by a remarkable writer and performer who also happened to be my roommate. everything I know about love I learned from taxidermy by Catherine Kidd was laborious to make, with each Japanese paper spine (cover- ing the staples) fed trough my shiny new desktop printer, each cover sprayed with varnish so the ink didn’t run, each page cut with a knife.

Independent comics have made significant strides over the past decade. They are taken seriously as a visual art form – no longer always associated with the funny papers – and yet there hadn’t been a significant museum exhibition examining their legacy and impact across Canada until now. The Art Gallery of Hamilton’s This Is Serious: Canadian Indie Comics, running until Jan. 5, 2020, presents the country’s first major retrospective dedicated to the discipline. More than 45 comic artists are featured, including stalwarts like Seth, Chester Brown, Fiona Smyth, and Julie Doucet, alongside a new generation of talents such as Kate Beaton, Michael DeForge, Jillian Tamaki, and Aminder Dhaliwal. The show provides a behind-the-page look at the artists’ processes, as well as a local historical context thanks to the inclusion of pioneers like Doug Wright. This Is Serious co-curators – Alana Traficante, AGH’s adjunct curator of contemporary art, and cartoonist Joe Ollmann (The Abominable Mr. Seabrook) – share their thoughts on the show’s origins.
