Son riche catalogue fait voisiner Adrian Tomine, Chester vernissage le mardi 26 janvier 2016 Brown, Seth, Lynda Barry. La Galerie Martel est heureuse à partir de 18 h 30 de vous présenter une sélection de ces artistes, par leurs œuvres originales. Galerie Martel Voici 30 ans, à quoi ressemblait outre-Atlantique l’empire 17, rue Martel - 75010 Paris des comics ? Certes, Spiegelman et Mouly venaient de lancer [email protected]/01 42 46 35 09 RAW. Certes, Fantagraphics confirmait son ascendant, mais 14 h 30-19 heures du mardi au samedi c’est à peine si quelques éditeurs alternatifs proposaient www.galeriemartel.com des produits façon DC ou Marvel - dopés de mots crus et de nus. Dans ce paysage confus Chris Olivero, lança Drawn & Quarterly (D+Q) en 1990. Ce Montréalais de 23 ans - gagnant sa vie comme coursier cycliste - était décidé à transformer l’esthétique du genre. Avec son petit appartement pour tout espace professionnel, il réunit une poignée d’artistes de talent et publia sa première anthologie. Depuis, D+Q est devenu l’un des premiers éditeurs de comics du continent nord-américain. La maison se flatte d’avoir « publié des romans graphiques avant même que les libraires leur aient fait de la place sur leurs rayonnages. » Son catalogue d’auteurs, où Joe Sacco et Chris Ware voisinent avec Daniel Clowes et Rutu Modan, est purement éblouissant et se renouvelle sans cesse. À l’occasion du 25e anniversaire de D+Q, la Galerie Martel est heureuse de vous présenter une sélection de ces artistes, par le biais d’une exposition de leurs œuvres originales. Avec des auteurs canadiens pour premiers poulains - Chester Brown, Julie Doucet, Seth, etc. - D+Q n’a pas tardé à étoffer son écurie de recrues européennes et japonaises. Le miracle, c’est qu’en laissant les coudées franches à chacun de ces créateurs, l’identité éditoriale de la maison ne s’est jamais trahie. La récente prise de RELATIONS PRESSE distance de Chris Oliveros, désormais consultant, n’y change rien. Et la couronne dont Time Magazine sacra GALERIE MARTEL D+Q en 2004, « l’éditeur de comics le plus élégant AMÉLIE PAYAN d’Amérique du nord » tient toujours. [email protected]/06 10 19 30 02 François Landon DRAWN AND QUARTERLY Lynda Barry Peintre, dessinatrice, romancière, illustratrice, conférencière, dramaturge, éditrice, commentatrice, enseignante… Aux yeux de Lynda Barry, autant de métiers qui se ressemblent. Cette artiste le sait bien : elle les a tous exercés. Auteur saluée de Mes cent démons, lauréate du prix Eisner 2003 (édition française Ça et là, 2014) et de La Fille du boucher (édition du Panama, 2007), Lynda Barry est une créatrice puissante, une pédagogue née… et une ennemie jurée des éoliennes. Marc Bell Un sens de l’absurde enraciné dans les comics classiques, mais passé au filtre de l’underground sixties : ses mises en page hors norme sont pour beaucoup dans le succès de Marc Bell. Les critiques enthousiastes qu’a déclenché Geneviève Castrée son travail, notamment dans les colonnes du Time et du New York Times, lui interdisent de revendiquer désormais l’étiquette d’artiste parallèle. Bell est l’auteur de Pure Pajamas, de Shrimpy and Paul and Friends (édition française Cornélius 2010) et de la magistrale anthologie Hot Potatoe. Chester Brown Deux récits graphiques inspirés de faits réels ont taillé la réputation de Chester Brown : Louis Riel (l’histoire d’un chef métis rebelle, fondateur du Manitoba) et 23 prostituées (chronique autobiographique d’un micheton - édition française Cornélius, 2012). Brown fait partie de l’écurie D+Q depuis 1991, après s’être auto-édité durant quelques années. Son prochain ouvrage, Mary Wept Over the Feet of Jesus, paraîtra ce printemps. Il s’agit d’une relecture de 9 récits bibliques ayant trait au sexe rémunéré. Geneviève Castrée Teenager, elle a conquis l’underground montréalais avec ses mini-comics. Susceptible, son récit graphique le plus récent et le plus achevé (paru simultanément chez D+Q et en français chez Apocalypse) est le récit de son passage douloureux de l’enfance au monde des adultes - élevée en solo par une mère qui se considèrait davantage comme Chester Brown Chester sa grande sœur que sa génitrice. Outre le dessin, Castrée modèle des figurines de porcelaine et enregistre ses créations musicales sous le nom de Ô PAON. Julie Doucet Crue, hilarante et choquante, sa série de comics Dirty Plotte (aux textes tour à tour anglais et français, réédités avec leurs traductions par L’Oie de Cravan, 2013) ont changé le visage du dessin alternatif. Dans les années 1990, Julie Doucet aborde le roman graphique. En 2000, à la parution de L’affaire madame Paul (édition française L’Association, 2002), elle abandonne la BD au profit d’autres formes d’art graphique, gravure, sérigraphie, animation. Lynda Barry Lynda DRAWN AND QUARTERLY Lisa Hanawalt Elle est la directrice artistique-productrice de Bojack Horseman, sitcom animée mettant en scène des personnages humains et zoomorphiques, diffusée sur Netflix. Elle a créé des illustrations, des couvertures, des comics, des fresques, des animations, des motifs de tissus. My Dirty dumb Eyes, son premier ouvrage publié par D+Q, mêle peintures, dessins, listes humoristiques, pour mettre à nu les travers de la pop culture et de la société contemporaine. Prochain ouvrage à paraître : Hot Dog Taste Test au printemps 2016 Jason Lutes Il s’est nourri de comics de superhéros et de western puis, à neuf ans, a découvert lors d’un voyage en Europe la bande dessinée à la française. C’est Berlin, sa trilogie en forme de feuilleton situé dans les dernières années de la république de Weimar qui l’a révélé, avec sa virtuosité sobre et sa force romanesque. Lutes, qui vit dans le Vermont avec sa compagne et leurs deux enfants, enseigne au Center for Cartoon Studies. Il travaille actuellement au dernier volet de sa trilogie. Anders Nilsen Adrian Tomine Dessinateur de bandes dessinées et artiste visuel, Anders Nilsen a pour œuvre majeure Big Questions (version française chez L’ Association, 2012), qui lui valut le Lynd Award Graphic Novel Prize et l’Ignatz Award, ainsi qu’une nomination au Grand Prix du festival d’Angoulême. Ce conte philosophique mâtiné de fable a pour vecteur principal un peuple d’oiseaux. Il compte 600 pages, et a coûté à son auteur 15 ans de travail. Nilsen vit et travaille à Minneapolis. Seth En 1991, Seth lance son propre comic book à forte tendance autobiographique, Palookaville, dans un style inspiré des cuvées 1930 et 1940 du New Yorker - magazine pour lequel il dessine par ailleurs. Il se place délibérément Anders Nilsen sous l’influence de Robert Crumb, de Harvey Pekar, d’Art Spiegelman. Quoi qu’œuvre de fiction, son La Vie est belle malgré tout (édition française Delcourt, 2009) se présente comme autobiographique, une attitude proche de l’autofiction déjà revendiquée par Lynda Barry. Adrian Tomine « Figurez-vous les sensibilités d’auteur d’un Raymond Carver revêtues du sens artistique d’un Edward Hopper - ou le contraire : sous une forme graphique, il s’agit ici de littérature sérieuse. Dans le travail de Tomine, dense et économe, chaque image comme chaque mot compte. » Qu’ajouter à cette critique du Phoenix New Time ? Qu’outre émarger au New Yorker, Tomine, avec Killing and Dying, signe une oeuvre à la hauteur de son talent. Il vit et travaille à Brooklyn avec sa femme et sa fille. Pour fêter son premier quart de siècle, D+Q a publié un riche volume de 800 pages, mêlant comics et commentaires : Drawn and Quarterly, Twenty- Five Years of Contemporary Cartooning, Comics, and Graphic Novels. I examine a broad selection of texts including graphic autobiography, biography, memoir, and diary in order to argue that writers and readers can, through these graphic narratives, engage with an eclectic and eccentric understanding of Canadian historical subjects. Contemporary Canadian comics are important for Canadian literature and life writing because they acknowledge the importance of contemporary urban and marginal subcultures and function as representations of people who occasionally experience economic scarcity. I focus on stories of “ordinary” people because their stories have often been excluded from accounts of Canadian public life and cultural history. Following the example of Barbara Godard, Heather Murray, and Roxanne Rimstead, I re- evaluate Canadian literatures by considering the importance of marginal literary products. Canadian comics authors rarely construct narratives about representative figures standing in place of and speaking for a broad community; instead, they create what Murray calls “history with a human face . the face of the daily, the ordinary” (“Literary History as Microhistory” 411).

Our primary interest is in "alternative" cartoonists and cartooning, narrowly defined; that is, figures associated with the underground, independent, and/or ground-level comics movements.     Introduction* Chris Reyns-Chikuma and Gail de Vos University of Alberta Recent comic book scholarship has examined the influence of comic books and 5 comics culture in various countries and regional areas other than the three big tradi- tions (US, Japan, and France-Europe). Comics and the US South (2012), and various essays on cultural identity in Québec, Scotland and other countries in Comics as a Nexus of Cultures: Essays on the Interplay of Media, Disciplines and International Perspectives (2010), are two examples. Jason Dittmer reflected on Canadian super- heroes in regards to Captain America in his Captain America and the Nationalist Superhero: Metaphors, Narratives, and Geopolitics (2013),1 in which he demonstrated how Captain America and Captain Canuck embodied a nation-state but neglected to address issues of multiculturalism. Bart Beaty, one of the most prominent Canadian comics scholars, preceded Dittmer’s analysis on the topic in 2006 with “The Fighting Civil Servant: Making Sense of the Canadian Superhero,” in which he concluded, “It is clear that the overt nationalism of Canadian superheroes in their contemporary era had as much to do with frustrations over sustaining a viable Canadian comics publishing industry [against the overwhelming American comics tradition and mass media power] as it did with representational issues of Canadian identity” (“Fighting Civil Servant” 438). The concept for Conundrum Press was born in a shack somewhere in north- ern BC, buried in a conversation about the end of my treeplanting career.     8/14/2019 A retrospective of Canadian indie comics reveals a deep interest in personal storytelling | Quill and Quire INDUSTRY NEWS A retrospective of Canadian indie comics reveals a deep interest in personal storytelling The Art Gallery of Hamilton’s indie comic exhibit, which runs until January 5, 2020. Independent comics have made significant strides over the past decade. They are taken seriously as a visual art form – no longer always associated with the funny papers – and yet there hadn’t been a significant museum exhibition examining their legacy and impact across Canada until now. The Art Gallery of Hamilton’s This Is Serious: Canadian Indie Comics, running until Jan. 5, 2020, presents the country’s first major retrospective dedicated to the discipline. More than 45 comic artists are featured, including stalwarts like Seth, Chester Brown, Fiona Smyth, and Julie Doucet, alongside a new generation of talents such as Kate Beaton, Michael DeForge, Jillian Tamaki, and Aminder Dhaliwal. The show provides a behind-the-page look at the artists’ processes, as well as a local historical context thanks to the inclusion of pioneers like Doug Wright.
