Nsw Government Supports Next Generation Country Music Stars NSW GOVERNMENT SUPPORTS NEXT GENERATION COUNTRY MUSIC STARS Saturday 23 January 2010 Premier Kristina Keneally today visited the 38th Tamworth Country Music Festival to support the annual event and meet with New England families and businesses. Tamworth will welcome more than 50,000 visitors and country music fans during the course of the 10 day festival, contributing more than $18 million to the local economy. The NSW Government, through Events NSW, is working with organisers to raise the international profile of the festival. The 38th Tamworth Country Music Festival is the largest ever with more than 2,200 events and 4,000 different performances. More than 600 buskers will also perform throughout the course of the festival in Tamworth’s main thoroughfare – Peel Street. During her visit, Premier Keneally also announced the NSW Government will fund five new scholarships in this year’s Country Music Association of Australia’s (CMAA) Australian Academy of Country Music scholarship program. The scholarship program brings some of the best and brightest Country Musicians to Tamworth, where they stay for two weeks and receive professional coaching in all aspects of country music. Tuition is available for both under 18 performers and more experienced adult performers. Ms Keneally said the CMAA Academy of Country Music Program has been a breeding ground for future stars of Country Music. “Previous graduates of this program include Golden Guitar winners Sara Storer, Talia Wittman and Brooke and Samantha McClymont of the McClymont Sisters,” Ms Keneally said “For many budding country music stars this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn the skills required to establish themselves in the Country Music Industry. “Students learn everything from song writing, to vocal technique and delivery, business management and marketing skills, as well as performance technique and music theory. “They are mentored by some of the biggest names in Country Music including Troy Cassar - Daley, John Williamson and Kasey Chambers. “The NSW Government is proud to support this program and proud to support country music.” Chairman of the Country Music Association of Australia, Mr Rod Laing said the investment to the Academy in 2010 by the NSW Government is a great boost in its first year as a combined program. “The Academy in Tamworth is unique, there is nothing like it in Australia, in fact the world, and it demonstrates the commitment to growing and developing Australian country music.” .

  • Sweet Rebecca Abc/Universal
BECCY COLE SWEET REBECCA ABC/UNIVERSAL Country songstress Beccy Cole has delighted Australian listeners and concert goers for more than twenty years. The Adelaide-born star’s glowing warmth, honeyed voice, bawdy sense of humour and perpetual smile have helped make Beccy one of the nation’s best-loved and most celebrated artists. With her stunning tenth release Sweet Rebecca, Beccy colours these winning qualities with bittersweet remembrance and reflection on her life thus far – both onstage and off. With nine Golden Guitars to her name (including four for Female Vocalist of the Year), as well as multiple ARIA Top 10 Country and Top 40 Mainstream albums, a Top 10 DVD, three gold- certified releases, and more than a dozen No. 1 Australian country singles, Beccy Cole is one of Australia’s most successful singer-songwriters. Since 1997, Beccy has piloted a succession of stellar releases, including most recent ARIA- nominated studio effort Songs & Pictures (2011), featuring the Golden Guitar-winning hits ‘Waitress’ and ‘Millionaires’ (with Kasey Chambers). Sweet Rebecca follows hot on the heels of Beccy’s phenomenal collaboration with Melinda Schneider, Great Women of Country (2014). As the title promises, Sweet Rebecca is the most personal album of Beccy’s career. The release coincides with the publication of Beccy’s strikingly candid memoir, Poster Girl. It was the frequently gruelling task of penning this tell-all account of her life and career to date that inspired the intensely, grippingly honest songs of Sweet Rebecca. “For me, every time I write songs it’s a very cathartic experience, because I write about my life,” Beccy says.

  • The Gendered Voice of Australian Country Music
2011 © Graeme Smith, Context 35/36 (2010/2011): 27–38. The Gendered Voice of Australian Country Music Graeme Smith How do Australian country music singers sing, and why do they sing as they do? In his 1987 article ‘Why do songs have words,’ Simon Frith stresses that the words of a song constitute a very small part of the meaning of the musical act.1 The ‘voice’ of the singer, understood both as the sound produced and the discursive position that the singer occupies, is a complex vehicle for meaning, acting within musical, historical, stylistic and linguistic fields. As Australian country music emerged as a genre in the 1930s and 1940s, Australian singers produced versions of the musical styles of American performers like Jimmie Rodgers, the Carter family and others. Australian performers soon developed ways of performing localism within the music style. The genre has made persistent claims to be Australia’s authentic music and the true representation of Australian experience and national identity.2 For its practitioners and fans, Australian country music has become a voice of the nation. The national ideological and musical position occupied by Australian country music is not an unusual one. Many popular music genres around the world create in similar ways local mixes of nostalgia, nationalism, regionalism, address to rural and working-class audiences, and social conservatism. American ethnomusicologists Aaron Fox and Christine Yano have sketched out a field called Global Country, within which we might comfortably also include 1 Simon Frith, ‘Why do Songs have Words?’ Lost in Music: Culture, Style and the Musical Event, ed.
