Name of the Department : National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) 2. Year of establishment : 1991 3. Is the Department part of a School/Faculty of the university? NCBS is an autonomous department of TIFR. 4. Names of programmes offered (UG, PG, M.Phil., Ph.D., Integrated Masters; Integrated Ph.D., D.Sc., D.Litt., etc.) PhD, Integrated Masters-PhD, MSc-by-Research in Life Sciences, MSc in Wildlife Biology and Conservation 5. Interdisciplinary programmes and departments involved Interdisciplinary programmes including courses covering physics and biology are being conducted jointly with TIFR Hyderabad and the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS-TIFR) Bangalore. 6. Courses in collaboration with other universities, industries, foreign institutions, etc. Courses are conducted in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science, the JNCASR, and the Raman Research Institute. In addition, numerous workshops are run each year with industry partners, such as the Bangalore Microscopy Course (www.ncbs.res.in/BangaloreMicroscopyCourse/Home) which has been organized annually since 2009 in collaboration with partners such as Nikon, Zeiss, Leica, and Olympus. Examination System: Annual/Semester/Trimester/Choice Based Credit System We have an Academic Calendar with two academic semesters: January – May and August – December. Examinations are conducted at the conclusion of each course and not simultaneously. This is a Choice-Based-Credit-System and students select courses based on listed offerings, each course is worth 2 – 4 credits and the students are assigned a final CGPA. 9. Participation of the department in the courses offered by other departments As mentioned above, we participate in the courses of TIFR-Hyderabad and ICTS- Bangalore, especially on interdisciplinary topics at the interface of physics and biology. 10.     Prof. Satyajit Mayor Got Prestigious Chevalier De L'ordre National Du

    Prof. Satyajit Mayor got prestigious Chevalier De L’ordre National Du Mérite Prof. Satyajit Mayor, Director of the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS-TIFR) was conferred the distinguished Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Mérite, French order of merit by the Ambassador of France to India, Mr. H. E. Emmanuel Lenain on 19th November, 2019. Prof. Satyajit Mayor with Mr. H. E. Emmanuel Lenain, the Ambassador of France to India, Prof. Mayor is professor and director of the National Centre for Biological Science (NCBS), Bangalore, and Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (inStem), Bangalore, India. In 2012, Prof. Mayor won the Infosys Prize for life sciences for his research on regulated cell surface organization and membrane dynamics. He studied chemistry at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay and has earned his Ph.D. in life sciences from The Rockefeller University, New York. He developed tools to study the trafficking of membrane lipids and GPI- anchored proteins in mammalian cells using quantitative fluorescence microscopy during his post-doctoral research at Columbia University. Prof. Mayor has to his credit some of the prestigious national and international awards. Few of the awards and fellowships include Foreign Associate to US National Academy of Sciences, EMBO Fellow, TWAS Prize in Biology, JC Bose Fellowship, CSIR-Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, Swarnajayanti Fellowship, Wellcome Trust International Senior Research Fellowship, Mizutani Foundation for Glycoscience Award, Helen Hays Whitney Post-Doctoral Fellowship, etc. The prestigious Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Mérite award reflects Prof. Mayor’s extensive efforts in supporting Indo-French scientific collaborations.

    AJUDHYA NATH KHOSLA Elected Fellow 1951 "An eminent engineer, an able administrator and a generous human being" will be the epithets by which AJUDHYA NATH KHOSLAwill be known to the posterity in India. Belonging to a generation of Indians, born when the country was under foreign domination, Dr Xhosla was proud to be an Indian and had great confidence in the capabilities of Indian engineers. There is no doubt that he had few equals to match his qualities, achievements and abilities. EARLYLIFE AND EDUCATION Ajudhya Nath Khosla was born in Jullunder City in the Punjab on December 11, 1892. He had his early education at the Government High School and later at the Anglo-Sanskrit H~ghSchool, Jullunder, from which he passed his Matric exami- nation in 1908. He had his college education at the DAV College, Lahore, from where he graduated in Arts (Hons) in 1912 securing the first position in the University ' and the highest marks in mathematics. Young Khosla joined the Thomson College of Civil Engineering, Roorkee in October 1913 and graduated with honours. Soon after passing out from the Engineering College, in July 1916, he joined the Punjab Public Works Department (Irrigation Branch). It is interesting to note that his first assignment was to investigate and survey connected with Bhakra Dam Project, a major challenge faced and overcame by him with great distinction in later life. The dam, one of the highest in the world, stands on the same axis as he had proposed in 1917 as an apprentice engineer. From July 1918 to March 1920, during the First World War, he was with the Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force in Iraq as a Commissioned Officer, when he made his first original contribution to engineering by designing Khosla Disc for precision levelling across rivers and wide valleys.

Swaminathan is an agricultural scientist and plant geneticist, popularly known for his work on the ‘Green Revolution in India’. A collection of his research notes, annotated drafts, correspondences and photographs makes up the M.S. Swaminathan Collection at the Archives at M.S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF). Swaminathan until 2013), the Bhoothalingam library, and office of the Chairperson at the Foundation. As of Nov. 02 2020, the bulk of the material is now in the cabin next to the office of the Executive Director.
