Laguna de Tamiahua is ecologically and economically important as a nursery area that favours the recruitment of species that sustain traditional fisheries. It has been studied previously, though not throughout its whole area, and considering the variety of habitats that sustain these fisheries, as well as an increase in population growth that impacts the system. The objectives of this study were to present an updated list of fish species, data on special status, new records, commercial importance, dominance, density, ecotic position, and the spatial and temporal distribution of species in the lagoon, together with a comparison of Tamiahua with 14 other Gulf of Mexico lagoons. Materials and methods. Fish were collected in August and December 1996 with a Renfro beam net and an otter trawl from different habitats throughout the lagoon. The species were identified, classified in relation to special status, new records, commercial importance, density, dominance, ecotic position, and spatial distribution patterns. -

Accepted 23 August 2013 Three species of marine Amphipoda, Peramphithoe africana, Varohios serratus and Ceradocus isimangaliso, are described as new to science and an additional 13 species are recorded from South Africa for the first time. Twelve of these new records originate from collecting expeditions to Sodwana Bay in northern KwaZulu-Natal, while one is an introduced species newly recorded from Simon’s Town Harbour. In addition, we collate all additions and revisions to the regional amphipod fauna that have taken place since the last major monographs of each group and produce a comprehensive, updated faunal list for the region. A total of 483 amphipod species are currently recognized from continental South Africa and its Exclusive Economic Zone . Of these, 35 are restricted to freshwater habitats, seven are terrestrial forms, and the remainder either marine or estuarine. The fauna includes 117 members of the suborder Corophiidea, 260 of the suborder Gammaridea, 105 of the suborder Hyperiidea and a single described representative of the suborder Ingolfiellidea. -

The material was collected during 12 summer expeditions organized from Diversity; 1997 to 2013. In all, 24 pelagic and 116 benthic taxa were recorded, most of them widely Distribution distributed Arctic-boreal species. The advection of different water masses from the shelf had a direct impact on the structure of the pelagic Malacostraca communities, resulting in the clear dominance of the sub-arctic hyperiid amphipod Themisto abyssorum in Kongsfjorden and the great abundance of Decapoda larvae in Hornsund. The taxonomic, functional and size compositions of the benthic malacostracan assemblages varied between the two fjords, and also between the glacier-proximate inner bays and the main fjord basins, as a result of the varying dominance patterns of the same assemblage of species. There was a significant drop in species richness in the strongly disturbed glacial bays of both fjords, but only in Hornsund was this accompanied by a significant decrease in density and diversity, probably due to greater isolation and poorer quality of sediment organic matter in its innermost basin. -

Abstract: Gammaridea and Corophiidea amphipod species from the Beagle Channel and the Straits of Magellan were listed for the first time; their faunas were compared on the basis of bibliographic information and material collected in one locality at Beagle Channel (Isla Becasses). The species Schraderia serraticauda and Heterophoxus trichosus (collected at Isla Becasses) were cited for the first time for the Magellan region; Schraderia is the first generic record for this region. A total of 127 species were reported for the Beagle Channel and the Straits of Magellan. Sixty-two species were shared between both passages (71.3 % similarity). The amphipod species represented 34 families and 83 genera. The similarity at genus level was 86.4 %, whereas 23 of the 34 families were present in both areas. For all species, 86 had bathymetric ranges above 100 m and only 12 species ranged below 200 m depth. In the Beagle Channel, only one species had a depth record greater than 150 m, whereas in the Straits of Magellan, 15 had such a record. -

The temporal and spatial fluctuations of sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll a (Chla) levels due to atmospheric forcing in Mexico’s third largest tropical coastal lagoon (Tamiahua Lagoon), located in the western Gulf of Mexico, was examined from July 2002 to May 2012. The main hypothesis of this study is that SST and Chla levels are modulated by the exchange of heat fluxes from the atmosphere and by rainfall (river runoff). The atmosphere supplies heat (555.05 ± 42.31 W m–2) to Tamiahua Lagoon, which implies that the temperature of the lagoon over the period analyzed (~27 ºC) was higher than normal in the coastal zone. Precipitation regulates Chla levels during the rainy season because the cross-correlation values were high (r > 0.61) and the phase lag of the rainy season with the Chla time series was typically 0 to –1 month. El Niño/Southern Oscillation phases affected the rainfall patterns and, thus, Chla concentrations in the lagoon. -

These are described and illustrated in detail under the names: Ampithoe hirsutimanus, Batea schotti, Caribboecetes Justi, Cerapus ttiomasi, Lambos scdostemum, Nasaganaia comisariensis, and Seba mbusta. INTRODUCTION The peracarid crustacean fauna from the Caribbean coast of northern South America is still very incompletely documented. Recent studies indicate the existence of a rich fauna along this region. Along the Colombian coast, for example, a considerable number of interesting or previously undescribed isopod species have been found (Muller, 1988a, b; 1989; 1990a, b, c, d; 1991; 1992; 1993a, b, c; Kensley and Schotte, 1994). In contrast, reports on amphipods from this coast are sparse, and only a few species have been recorded by Barnard (1954), Calero (1982), and Ortiz (1983). In an effort to increase a collection base for systematic studies of the crustacean fauna from this coast, one of the authors (R.L.) conducted qualitative sampling in various shore habitats south of the city of Cartagena, Colombia, during the months of March and July of 1991. -

For marine direct developers, both adults and juveniles may disperse. Although the distribution of juveniles can be initially constrained by their mothers’ choice, they may be able to leave the parental habitat and colonize other habitats. We investigated the effect of habitat quality, patch size and presence of conspecific adults on the colonization of novel habitats by juveniles of the tube-dwelling amphipod Cymadusa filosa associated with the macroalgal host Sargassum filipendula. Methods: We tested the factors listed above on the colonization of juveniles by manipulating natural and artificial plants in both the field and laboratory. Results: In the laboratory, juveniles selected high-quality habitats (i.e., natural alga), where both food and shelter are provided, when low-quality resources (i.e., artificial alga) were also available. In contrast, habitat quality and algal patch size did not affect the colonization by juveniles in the field. Finally, the presence of conspecific adults did not affect the colonization of juveniles under laboratory condition but had a weak effect in the field experiment. Our results suggest that C. filosa juveniles can select and colonize novel habitats, and that such process can be partially affected by habitat Submitted 6 August 2020 quality, but not by patch size.
