Annual Report Cares meets pressing community needs by mobilizing caring New Yorkers in volunteer service.

We connect the needs of the community with the passions of our residents. By extending the capacity of nonprofits and schools across the city, our volunteers help address inequities within three core impact areas: education, immediate needs, and public spaces. “There are years that ask questions, and years that answer.” – Zora Neale Hurston Harlem Renaissance novelist

2019 was a year for questions. How do we deepen our impact? How do we form stronger relationships with the communities we serve? How do we provide truly transformational volunteer programming?

New York Cares sought answers the way we have for decades: by listening to our nonprofit and school partners, assessing the needs of local communities, and adapting our programming to match. We piloted new programs in NYC public schools to support English Language Learners, introduced students to social-emotional learning practices, and reimagined indoor and outdoor revitalization projects.

We sought to deepen relationships between volunteers and communities. Our first cohort of Starbucks Foundation Fellows laid the groundwork for a more holistic approach to assessing need. Our Winter Wishes program brought thousands of gifts to children and teens in family shelters, transitional , and Title I Schools. We distributed nearly 95,000 warm winter coats, 10,000 of which went directly to NYC Community Schools for students and families living in temporary housing.

All thanks to the countless donors, volunteers, partners, and broader community for their generosity and continued commitment to building a more equitable city for all New Yorkers.

Early results of our program at PS 196 K showed nearly all students increased their reading an average of 1-2 levels.

The Department of Education and Mayor Bill DeBlasio have also been stressing the importance of social-emotional learning (SEL). Following an assessment of school needs we began using SEL curriculum created by Sanford Harmony, a NYC DOE partner, at two of our partner schools.

When it came to meeting basic community needs, New York Cares volunteers worked to collect 94,960 warm winter jackets for the 31st annual Coat Drive. 10,000 coats were donated to NYC public schools for students and families living in temporary housing. Furthermore, 700+ volunteers infused more than $20+ million dollars into our community through our Tax Prep program! Deepening Relationships with Communities

In 2019, we hosted our first cohort of Starbucks Fellows, native New Yorkers Todd Gayle and Adam Maldonado.

The Starbucks Foundation Service Fellow program provides Starbucks employees with an opportunity to pursue their personal passions by supporting the work of local nonprofits. Our fellows collaborated closely with staff to develop a new scalable model for community engagement, starting with neighborhoods in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, and Jamaica, Queens.

From attending community board “I think there’s something to meetings and town halls to engaging with be said about organizations stakeholders in focus groups and building and people and companies and relationships with local nonprofits and elected officials, the Starbucks Fellows groups that aren’t afraid to made valuable contributions to the change what works in order to way New York Cares continues to foster be better. – Todd Gayle Starbucks Fellow Transformative Service

New York Cares Day for Schools focused on revitalizing spaces at 15 NYC public schools.

More than 1,500 volunteers came together for these projects tailored to the needs of each specific school community. From meditation spaces to a new library, spaces were transformed in ways more significant than mere aesthetics.

“PS 18 X has been in partnership with New York Cares for more than a decade. That’s dog years in loyalty. Projects have left imprints on our classrooms, playgrounds, cafeteria, library, gym and just about every space you can imagine in a school; even our basement. A huge thank you goes out to New York Cares staff, project managers, volunteers and sponsors. These revitalization projects would not have been possible without their commitment and hard work.”

I’m the middle child and I didn’t want to put my family through all that financially. Now I’ve learned about the FAFSA and financial aid and …I want to go.”

– Alison, 2019 College Prep student “Today, while I was just sitting preparing somebody’s taxes, I looked up and a client was looking at me. She smiled at me and said, ‘You did my taxes last year!’ It’s the kind of reaction I enjoy. When people you only see once a year are genuinely happy with the service you offer them, that really makes my day.”
