It brought together an impressivearray of scholars and practitioners who provided participants with knowledge, perspective, and insight. It challenged participants to explore the intricacies of these docu- ments in ways that many had not considered. The Institute was an exciting and stimulating learning experience for all who took part in it. Presenters remarked on the quality, enthusiasm, and knowledge of our participants; participants were likewise impressed by the willingness of presenters to share both knowledge and experience in ways that gave new mea;i- ing to the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Our staff, in particular,was gratified by the high level of professionalism and collegiality that both presenters and partici- pants brought to the Institute. The mutual sharing of time, talent and energy that characterized the Institute was key to its success. Planning for the Institute represented the best in collegial collaborationas well. Members of the ABA Special Committee and Advisory Commissionon Youth Education for Citizenship worked with staff from concept to completion. As always, we are grateful for the counsel and support provided by this distinguished group of lawyers and educators; our efforts are cnriched through their participa- tion and commitment. I particularly wish to thank Dr. Isidore Starr. His long- standing commitment to providing quality educational experiences for teachers is evident in this Institute, In his own words, "We just have to provide this opportu- nity." The Institute, too, reflects the scholarship, commitment, and hard work of YEFC project coordinator Howard Kaplan. They are based upon presentations made at the Leon Jaworski Constitutional Institute, conducted by the ABA's Special Committee on Youth Education for Citizenship at the University of Pennsylvania in June 1988. In copy editing this cAlection of essays, a special effort was made to preserve the original flavor and immediacy of the oral presentations while at the same time maintaining high professional standards of readability and editorial consistency. This task was principally the work of Louise Kaegi, an experienced editor of legal and educational materials, who edited the initial transcriptions and worked directly with the authors on final edits and revisions of -he manusilript. Also providing editorial assistance at various stages of the project were VEIT, staff members Mabel McKinney-Browning, Howard Kaplan and Jack Wolowiec. On the other side, Schlafly, an Illinois mother of six who has marshalled an army of conservative housewives into an unlikely political force to fight the ERA, declares American women “the luckiest class of people on earth.” Then Schlafly goes for the jugular. “You simply cannot legislate universal sympathy for the middle-aged woman,” she purrs, knowing that Friedan had been through a bitter divorce. “You, Mrs. Friedan, are the unhappiest women I have ever met.” “You are a traitor to your sex, an Aunt Tom,” fumes Friedan, taking the bait. “And you are a witch.     The Two Women’s Movements Feminism has been on the march since the 1970s, but so has the conservative backlash. By Kim Phillips-Fein June 1, 2017 Phyllis Schlafly at a rally at the Illinois State Capitol in 1977. (AP) Not even death could stop Phyllis Schlafly. Her final broadside, The Conservative Case for Trump, was released the day after she died at the age of 92 last September. It was a fitting bookend to her first, A Choice Not an Echo, her self-published endorsement of Barry Goldwater for president in 1964. Unlike many other Christian conservatives who backed Texas Senator Ted Cruz in the GOP’s 2016 primaries, Schlafly supported Trump from the outset. Early in the year, she gave an hour-long interview to Breitbart News, making the case that Trump represented the only chance to overturn the “kingmakers” (her word for the Republican establishment). Like Trump, Schlafly’s politics were often focused on a muscular concept of national security. She wanted to see a “fence” protecting the country’s southern border, and she argued that Democrats were recruiting “illegals” in order to bolster their electoral chances. Despite his three marriages, she saw Trump as an “old-fashioned” man whose priorities were hard work and family. After Schlafly died, Trump returned the love. He gave a eulogy at her funeral in the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, raising a finger to deliver a promise: “We will never, ever let you down.” Schlafly emerged on the national scene in the early 1970s, when she led the campaign against the Equal Rights Amendment through her Eagle Forum.

Kennedy School of Government Harvard University FOREWORD Here is Proceedings '80, an attempt to capture the stream of people and ideas that flow through the Institute of Politics. It is the second edition of Proceedings since the Ten-Year Report was compiled in 1977 and the first retrospective to cover a single academic year. Thus, the readings are longer and the programs can be listed in more detail. Part One, "Readings," contains excerpts of written and spoken words from the wide variety of events and formats typical of Institute activity. It has been a campaign year, and the Institute has been an extraordinary place to witness that increasingly complex phenomenon. But politics is more than just campaigning, and most of the readings deal with issues from across the spectrum of political activity: drainage in west Texas, lawsuits at HEW, prisons in Maine, cameras in Afghanistan, sex-neutral determination of custody and child support, the medical effects of plutonium. The readings end with a few observations from people who see the Institute from within. Part Two, "Programs," is a detailed listing of all the projects, people, and products which make up the past year of Institute effort. Putting a unified face on the Institute of Politics is like trying to map out the globe on a flat piece of paper—there are dynamics of experience and perspective which cannot be translated to ink in two dimensions. The volume of activity has increased to a point where few of us can keep track of everything that happens here.
