3b 3a PILSENER vs. PALE ALE

• bottom fermented • top fermented • premium pale lager of pilsner • fruitiness style • the term appeared around 1703 • first produced in 1842 • applied to beers made from malt • served at 7-9°C dried with coke – lighter colour • till 1830 pale ale = • now pale ale = bottled beer bitter = cask conditioned beer • served at 12-13°C • bronze – copper colour

REAL ALE

• brewed from traditional ingredients • cask conditioned (yeast + a little residual sugar = natural carbonation) • matured by secondary fermentation 4a • unfiltered and unpateurised • fruity undertones (apples, plums, oranges, nuts, etc.)

• no additional nitrogen or CO2 pressure • hand pulls, gravity taps • the term coined by CAMRA in 1973 4b CAMRA ()

• campaigns for real ale, community and consumer rights • formed in March 1971 • response to moving away from traditional brewing • nearly 150,000 members all over the world • the most successful consumer campaign in Europe
