3. LCAP PRESENTATION AND INPUT DISCUSSION

This regularly scheduled meeting time was dedicated to a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) presentation and an input discussion from SCAC members.

4. “GOOD NEWS” REPORTS – The following written Good News reports were submitted following the LCAP meeting.

Bernardo Yorba had ten students attend the 16th Annual Chapman University Art and Writing Contest March 6 and three of the students competed against the 7,000 entrants from this year. Twenty-two JUMP (Junior Upcoming Medical Professionals) club members took a field trip with twenty-five Medical Services Academy students to Cypress College March 11 to learn about their programs: nursing, dental hygiene, sonography, health information technology, mortuary science, and sports medicine. Thirty- eight students won the most medals at the second annual R.E.A.C.H. Foundation’s Middle School Track Meet. History-Social Science teacher, Mr. Seitz, has been invited to attend the 2015 Assessment of Student Performance and Program (CAASPP) History-Social Science Stakeholder meeting in Sacramento March 18. At this meeting he will provide input into the new History-Social Science Content Assessment. This year’s Constitution Bowl has 16 students currently competing in a quiz-format competition answering questions regarding the U.S. Constitution. BYMS was randomly selected to participate in the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) February 26. The NAEP is often called the “Nations Report Card.” It is the largest continuing and nationally representative assessment of what our nation’s students know and can do in core subjects. BYMS had 47 students participate. The Matador Messenger reporters hosted ten Woodsboro students and their parents who were interested in learning how the online newspaper operates.

Bryant Ranch presents Babes in Toyland March 19-21. Everyone is looking forward to celebrating Bryant Ranch’s 25th Anniversary and Open House May 14. The Jog-A-Thon last month raised over $38,000 for student programs and events.

Fairmont’s Open House is March 19 and the PTA will present their Honorary Service Awards at 6 p.m. The Book Fair will be open that evening as well. CAASPP testing will begin after spring break. Students have been taking practice tests and using the Chromebook carts in preparation for testing. Students recently enjoyed Science on the Go assemblies. The Imagination Machine assembly is March 23 and students have submitted creative writing that the performers will turn into fun skits. Twenty-eight students will perform in the Honors Band concert later this month. Beauty and the Beast Jr. was a big success with approximately 180 students in two casts. Students in Grades 1-6 will be honored at the Trimester Awards assemblies at the end of the month.

Lakeview Lion Pride students are once again conducting a school-wide March Madness reading event. Every Friday during the month of March, Lion Pride students read books to the student body and then a vote is taken to pick their favorite book. Positively kNOw Drugs will be presented to fifth graders by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Lakeview is hosting the Ocean Institute as they present an assembly for fifth grade this month. Open House is March 19 and includes the annual Book Fair which is open March 16-20. The first Bingo Family Fun Night was held at the Yorba Linda Country Club February 27 and everyone had fun. The evening raised $1,000 that will be used for Chromebook accessories. As part of Lakeview’s GREEN EFFORTS for the year, students and staff have recycled an average of 2 reams of paper per week. Some of the paper is going to a local preschool for crafts and some is sent to Mexico for use in underdeveloped schools. Also a large box of gently used crayons has been sent to elementary schools in Mexico. January 16 students enjoyed a special assembly about the benefits of organic gardening. Students plan to plant an organic garden in the kindergarten playground area.

Melrose had a great turnout for Open House March 12. McKinney Vento is providing tutoring twice a week for an hour after school to provide students with a little extra support. Students are excited to have Farmer Boy coming to the school for an assembly. Over 100 students received a weekly nutrition backpack. March 31 is the school’s annual Jog-A-Thon.

Rio Vista continues to be a dynamic learning community. This week is the conclusion of a 4-week session of Hands on Science lesson conducted by CSUF Block 22 teacher candidates. The candidates organized the annual Family Science Night which was a big success. The STEM program will continue with an 8-week after school enrichment course focusing on engineering. This collaboration is in support of our vision to create a STEM ecosystem at Rio Vista. Farmer’s Market Friday began with an assembly for all students. The mini Farmer’s Market is intended to help promote the installation of the insulated produce bars on campus. For the past three years, Rio Vista has partnered with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to bring the campaign, Champions of Change, to the school and the students have really responded. This year’s campaign had several remarkable stories, here are two:

Brent and Brandon Le both donated $100 of their own money to this year’s effort. Both had planned to buy video games, but were compelled to give to help others instead. This is Brandon’s second year giving this amount and he taught his brother the gift of giving.

Mrs. Bates’ fourth grade class was motivated to collect funds for their classmate who passed away in early December from complications of a brain tumor. The class raised a total of $389.26. Mrs. Bates’ class will be treated to a luncheon from the Olive Garden in recognition of their efforts.

As a school, $7,013.22 was raised this year. A three-year total of $17,637.89 has been donated.

This year the school received the following Pennies for Patients pennants: Bronze Pennant: Classrooms raising $100 - $199 16 classrooms Silver Pennant: Classrooms raising $200 - $299 9 classrooms Gold Pennant: Classrooms raising $300 or more 7 classrooms

Tynes held a very successful Jog-A-Thon this month. The entire school participated in the Hero Dash and money was raised for new Chromebooks. Appreciation was expressed to all parents and students who supported this effort. The fourth grade GATE class put on a play about Early California. Students had a great time acting and singing to the historical events of California’s history. March 25 the PTA is sponsoring March Madness with several restaurants on Kraemer Blvd. participating. A portion of the proceeds from Marie Callendar’s and McDonald’s will go to the school to support technology. One class is selling tomato plants to promote healthy eating. Once again the school will host a GATE Magnet meeting and all parents with GATE and Honors students are invited to hear presentations from the magnet schools. A GATE tour will be conducted the next day for parents interested in Tynes. Open House is April 2 and students and staff are very excited to display the work they accomplished so far this year.

Valencia’s Academic Decathlon is third in Orange County and first in SuperQuiz in Division 1. The team is advancing to represent Orange County at the state competition in late March. The Science Olympiad is third in Orange County. The team is advancing to represent Orange County at the state competition in early April. The Chemistry Olympiad is third in Orange County. Orange County is sending 11 students to the National Chemistry Olympiad competitions and two are from Valencia High School.

The Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Soccer, and 11 wrestlers advanced to CIF. Boys Basketball tied a school record with wins and Boys Soccer set a new record with a perfect 10-0 league record. Valencia’s junior, Gabby Garcia, won her third straight CIF State Championship in wrestling.

Valencia will host a visitation team March 24 as part of the process to be recognized as a Gold Ribbon School.

Van Buren will celebrate its 50th Anniversary and Open House March 19. The agenda includes special guest speakers and student performances of popular songs spanning the decades, 1960–present. Decade booths will have entertainment, history, pop culture, contests, and giveaways. Food will also be available to purchase, and birthday cake, a photo booth, and a silent auction will be part of the fun. There will also be a Silent Auction to raise funds for an electronic school marquee. Meet the Masters and Science on the Go assemblies are this month. Chessmasters begins the end of March. The annual Roadrunner Talent Show will take place in April. This is always a fun, popular event.

Yorba Linda High School congratulates all of its sports teams for their outstanding performances during the winter season. The Men’s Basketball team won their first league championship in the new North Hills League and their first round of CIF play. The team was 6-0 in league and 21-7 overall. Junior, Isaac Douglas, was voted MVP of the league; senior, Alex Godoy, and junior, Eric Hezmalhalch, were voted 1st team all-league; juniors, Josh Miller and Zane Paddon, were voted 2nd team all-league. The Women’s Basketball team won the league championship with a 5-1 record in league competition and they won their first round of CIF competition. The Women’s Soccer team won the league championship, their first round of CIF play and had several players singled out for recognition: Devin Morones, North Hills Defensive MVP; Jacquelyn Dunlap, North Hills Offensive MVP; Taylor Asciak, Dana Jacobs, Allie Jara and Halle Walls, 1st team all-league; Brie Evans, Georgia Lodge, and Kira Weaver, 2nd team all-league; and Allie Kolb and Caitlin Dolan who received an honorable mention. Men’s Soccer also had four players named all-league for North Hills (Garrett Robb, Faraaz Uddin, Cameron Rehmani and Andrew Dirks). The Mustang wrestlers are Crestview League champions and CIF Central Division runners-up with 8 Masters qualifiers, which is the second most qualifiers in Orange County and a school record. Abe Ochoa earned his second CIF title and was awarded the outstanding wrestler of the tournament with a 5-0 record, with all pins in the first round. The Women’s Water Polo team had three players named Crestview all–league: Amy Castellano, Brittany Amaya, and Megan Siemsen.

YLHS also congratulates its Academic Decathlon team for their very first OCAD tournament with the following results: Miya Sheker, first place interview, third place math, third place speech; Aimee Lee, fourth place interview, fifth place speech; Andrew Lee, first place math, second place science, third place economics and social studies, fourth place music, fifth place art; Thalia Hull, second place math, third place essay, fourth place economics; Evelyn Chan, fifth place social science; George Abdallah, third place art, fifth place social science, science and economics.

Also congratulated are ninth grader, Kelly Nguyen, who finished in second place out of 7,000 entries in the Chapman University 16th Annual Holocaust Art and Writing Contest, and Peyton Wagner and Marcus Reed who were finalists in the contest. Congratulations to Cheyenne Kotick, who was crowned Miss Yorba Linda and awarded a $4,000 scholarship; Fernando Cardenas, who was selected by the OC Register as one of the top 10 theater artists of the year; ceramics student, Sydney Ortiz, who won both a Gold Key and Silver Key award from the statewide Scholastic Art Awards competition; art student, Brandon Bollinger, who took second place in the 9-12 division of the Trash Art Expo hosted by the City of Anaheim and Disneyland; art student, Liz Tipping, who won an honorable mention in the same art competition; and the 63 students who were inducted as new members into the National Honor Society.

The performing arts also had their share of good news. The Sinfonia Orchestra has been invited to perform at the Philharmonic Invitational High School Orchestra Festival at Segerstrom Hall March 26. YLHS Guard finished in second place at the Arcadia Festival and Jazz I finished in third place at the Western State Jazz Festival. The YLHS Jazz I and II bands also performed a concert at the DePalma Terrace Assisted Living Center, which was enjoyed and appreciated by the residents. The musical “Bells Are Ringing” will run March 19-21 and March 26-28 at the Forum Theater. Ten German exchange students will stay with local host families and shadow YLHS German language students.

SCAC Guest thanked the 11 schools, teachers, and students who participated in this year’s Chapman University Holocaust Art and Writing Contest. Out of submissions from 209 schools, the PYLUSD students and their teachers were awarded the following recognitions at the awards ceremony March 6:
