I hope everyone had a wonderful Passover Holiday! I’ve decided to focus my thoughts this issue on what has been going DAILY SERVICES on at HERJC over the past few months, and what is being planned for the next few months, that you will not necessarily read about in Hakol, Mornings or in the weekly emails. And lastly, Monday through Thursday, Sunday at the end of the school year, the windows in the atrium where the Nursery School students & Legal Holidays play will be replaced. 7:30 pm Back in 2010 we were one of the recipients of a security grant. Funds from that grant Fridays were utilized to improve the safety of the building. With Passover now behind us, our days are numbered . We will, on June 11th, celebrate Shavuot. Between now and then, however, we’ll pass our days in accordance with the civil calendar—with occasional, historical reminders from the calendar of the State of Israel, which includes: Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day); Yom HaZikaron (Israeli Memorial Day); and, Yom HaAtzmaut (Israeli Inde - pendence Day). Each moving in its own right (and rite), these observances tie us to the State of Israel and Jewish people worldwide. Dan Gerstman Lev Herrnson Less familiar to some, however, is the Counting of the Omer , the period of 49 Co-chair Co-chair 516-318-5572 516-232-5946 days between the start of Passover and the start of Shavuot, during which time we verbally count the days. The period of the Counting of the Omer is considered to be a time of potential for inner growth—for a person to work on one's good characteristics through introspection and mystical reflection. Mindfulness determines how we spend these days, which might otherwise pass without distinction. The passage of time can truly offer gifts beyond our works and the circumstances around us, if only we take the time to notice. We’d like to take count and notice our Patrons, those individuals and families who have elected to go above and beyond in support of the multi-varied programming at our synagogue. To date, 90 member-family units have (re-) joined as members of the Patrons Society. We are genuinely appreciative of their generous support of HERJC, and encourage you, our readers, to join us if you’ve not already done so. Can we count on you during this period of counting? Thinking of joining Patrons? Patrons Society annual giving levels are as follows: Simcha ($1,000), Chai ($1,800), Double Chai ($3,600), and Keter Torah ($5,000) . Your charitable contribution ensures that our synagogue remains a vital partner of the south shore community. If you’d like to discuss your participation this year, feel free to reach out to either of us. We wish you and your family a meaningful Counting of the Omer and happy Shavuot! Thank you.

HAKOL www.herjc.org MAY/JUNE 2016 page 7 holidays

LAG B’OMER Lag B’Omer is the 33rd day of the Omer (the 49 days counted be tween Pesach and Shavuot), which this year falls on May 26. Having no calendar, the Jews of ancient times counted the days from the second day of Pesach (the start of the cereal harvest) until Shavuot, when they would gather the harvest. Lag B’Omer is a solitary joyous day in this solemn period of the Jewish calendar, when so much Jewish persecution is remembered. On this day, we remem ber the miraculous cessation of a terrible plague that raged among Rabbi Akiva’s students. The yahrzeit of Simeon Bar Yohai, a great Jewish scholar who hid in a cave, living off carob and spring water when the Romans forbade the study of Torah, is also comme morated. When his students came to visit him, they disguised themselves as hunters with bows and arrows, hence the bows and arrows children play with on Lag B’Omer today. We also remember the amazing determi - nation and bravery of Bar Kochba and his small, ill-equipped Jewish army in with - standing the mighty Roman army for three long years. In most countries, Lag B’Omer is celebrated with picnics, field days and games of skill. In Israel, many Jews visit the grave of Rabbi Simeon Bar Yohai in Meron. Bonfires are lit and there is singing and dancing throughout the night because Rabbi Bar Yohai requested that his followers celebrate, rather than mourn, his death. The bonfires also remind us that the torch of Jewish learning continues to burn, despite cruel persecutions by tyrants throughout the centuries. SHAVUOT Shavuot means “weeks” and it falls exactly seven weeks after the second day of Pesach, on the 6th and 7th of Sivan. Shavuot is a three–fold celebra tion which commemorates the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai, the wheat harvest and the ripening of the first fruits in Israel. The Rabbis of old declared Sha vuot to be the most pleasant of all Jewish holidays. In ancient times, the cereal harvest began on the second day of Pass over with the ripening of barley. On this day, an omer or measure of grain was brought to the Temple as a thanks giving to God. The 49 days were counted until Shavuot and this period is still called Sefirat HaOmer or the counting of the Omer. A special prayer was and still is said at the end of the Evening Service during this period. In a way, it fits in very well with Passover and brings that great festival to a glorious con - clusion. On Pass over the Jews were freed from slavery and on Shavuot the freed slaves were made into free men by the Ten Com mand ments.

SHAVUOT CUSTOMS : In Israel, children usually march through the streets with baskets of fruit and beautifully decorated floats, in commemoration of the ancient festival processions carrying thanks giving offerings to the Temple. Synagogues and homes in countries all over the world are decorated with plants, flowers and greenery. On the first night of Shavuot, the Evening Service is delayed until abso lute nightfall to be sure the 49 days of counting are completed. Many observant Jews spend the whole first night studying Torah. During the day, the Scroll of Ruth is read at Services because this story describes harvesting in Palestine. On the second day, Yizkor is said. It is also customary to eat dairy foods, symbolizing the fact that the Torah is likened to “milk and honey.” page 8 MAY/JUNE 2016 www.herjc.org HAKOL Holiday Schedule Tikkun Layl Shavuot at HERJC EREV SHAVUOT a SATURDAY, JUNE 11 FOLLOWING 9:30 PM SERVICES a a SATURDAY, JUNE 11 Services & Tikkun ...... 9:30 pm It is tradition to FIRST DAY SHAVUOT study Torah on the a SUNDAY, JUNE 12 eve of Shavuot. USY Shortly after graduating high school, I got a job delivering flowers. (8th –12th grade) Among the things that I learned while working in the flower shop was Monday evenings that, while there were many reasons that people send flowers, the “bread 7:00 – 9:00 pm and butter” of a flower shop revolves around the year, specifically, holidays. For example, Valentine’s Day was a very busy day. Mother’s Kadima Day, too. (5th –7th grade) In a curious way, Religious School sometimes reminds me of that Tuesday evenings flower shop (Flowers by Marianne, if you wanted to know). While there 5:30 – 7:00 pm is a great deal that we concern ourselves with throughout the school year, much of what we do is dictated by the calendar and holidays. From the High Holidays Pizza Plus through Sukkot to Hanukah to Purim to Pesach and then Lag B’Omer (and Shavuot, (2nd –4th grade) depending on how the calendar falls) – with Shabbat punctuating each and every week – Tuesday evenings our year follows a wonderful and predictable rhythm. 5:30 – 7:00 pm That rhythm is what defines us as Jews and as Jewish learners. As Jews, we find signifi - cance in times and events – personal ones like weddings and births and communal ones like the ones I’ve noted. Knowing how to engage with ritual and understanding why that ritual is important lends meaning to our Jewish lives. Upcoming That is what we try to teach in Religious School. Special As we approach the end of the school year, I am always amazed to look back and see Events how much we’ve done. The year starts out in such a rush. Then there is a period of time (winter, generally speaking) when it seems that the year will go on and on and on and we will never make it to Hanukah. Then suddenly, we are in a rush to get everything done. It Stay tuned is Purim. We are preparing for Passover. Flowers are blossoming. And it is summer. for information Each year goes like this. In a manner of speaking, we try to stop to smell the flowers. It’s been a wonderful year, with a great deal of learning and experiences.
