PRESERVING LGBTQ HISTORY The chapters in this section provide a history of archival and architectural preservation of LGBTQ history in the United States. An archeological context for LGBTQ sites looks forward, providing a new avenue for preservation and interpretation. This LGBTQ history may remain hidden just under the ground surface, even when buildings and structures have been demolished. THE PRESERVATION05 OF LGBTQ HERITAGE Gail Dubrow Introduction The LGBTQ Theme Study released by the National Park Service in October 2016 is the fruit of three decades of effort by activists and their allies to make historic preservation a more equitable and inclusive sphere of activity. The LGBTQ movement for civil rights has given rise to related activity in the cultural sphere aimed at recovering the long history of same- sex relationships, understanding the social construction of gender and sexual norms, and documenting the rise of movements for LGBTQ rights in American history. -

Disco • Disco marked the dawn of dance-based popular music. • Growing out of the increasingly groove-oriented sound of early '70s and funk, disco emphasized the beat above anything else, even the singer and the song. • Disco was named after discotheques, clubs that played nothing but music for dancing. • Most of the discotheques were gay clubs in New York • The seventies witnessed the flowering of gay clubbing, especially in New York. For the gay community in this decade, clubbing became 'a religion, a release, a way of life'. The camp, glam impulses behind the upsurge in gay clubbing influenced the image of disco in the mid-Seventies so much that it was often perceived as the preserve of three constituencies - blacks, gays and working-class women - all of whom were even less well represented in the upper echelons of rock criticism than they were in society at large. • Before the word disco existed, the phrase discotheque records was used to denote music played in New York private rent or after hours parties like the Loft and Better Days. The records played there were a mixture of funk, soul and European imports. These "proto disco" records are the same kind of records that were played by Kool Herc on the early hip hop scene. - STARS and CLUBS • Larry Levan was the first DJ-star and stands at the crossroads of disco, house and garage. He was the legendary DJ who for more than 10 years held court at the New York night club Paradise Garage. -

For Immediate Release September 22, 2014 Media Contact/Interviews: Amy Hufnagel Director of Education (518) 828-1872 x 105 Image: Paul Banks and Amy Hufnagel join Olana’s team; photo credit: Melanie Hasbrook Olana Announces New Interpretative and Education Staff Hudson, NY – The Olana State Historic Site and The Olana Partnership are pleased to announce the hire of two new staff people: Paul Banks, the new Interpretive Program Assistant for the NY State Parks Department, and Amy Hufnagel, the new Director of Education at The Olana Partnership. They both joined the project in June and will work separately, but also in partnership, to enhance the educational and interpretive opportunities at Olana. Hufnagel will be designing and implementing k-12 field trip programs, planning public programs, working with curators and development staff. Banks will focus on delivering tours to the public, managing the docent staff, and assisting Kimberly Flook, Olana’s Site Manager, with all aspects of managing Olana. Together they will develop new tours and new outreach to expand Olana’s audiences. Banks and Hufnagel are thrilled at the opportunities for engaging the public in meaningful ways here at Olana. Banks remembers the first time he saw a Frederic Church masterpiece. The Icebergs at the Dallas Museum of Art not only stopped him in his tracks, it gave him a whole new appreciation for painting. Since then, his appreciation for art has only grown – as well as his career in communication and interpretation. As an Interpretive Park Ranger with the National Park Service (NPS) he was able to inspire people by telling the stories of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. -

CITY PARKS FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 109 GRANTS THROUGH NYC GREEN RELIEF & RECOVERY FUND AND GREEN / ARTS LIVE NYC GRANT APPLICATION NOW OPEN FOR PARK VOLUNTEER GROUPS Funding Awarded For Maintenance and Stewardship of Parks by Nonprofit Organizations and For Free Live Performances in Parks, Plazas, and Gardens Across NYC July 8, 2021 - NEW YORK, NY - City Parks Foundation announced today the selection of 109 grants through two competitive funding opportunities - the NYC Green Relief & Recovery Fund and GREEN / ARTS LIVE NYC. More than ever before, New Yorkers have come to rely on parks and open spaces, the most fundamentally democratic and accessible of public resources. Parks are critical to our city’s recovery and reopening – offering fresh air, recreation, and creativity - and a crucial part of New York’s equitable economic recovery and environmental resilience. These grant programs will help to support artists in hosting free, public performances and programs in parks, plazas, and gardens across NYC, along with the nonprofit organizations that help maintain many of our city’s open spaces. Both grant programs are administered by City Parks Foundation. The NYC Green Relief & Recovery Fund will award nearly $2M via 64 grants to NYC-based small and medium-sized nonprofit organizations. Grants will help to support basic maintenance and operations within heavily-used parks and open spaces during a busy summer and fall with the city’s reopening. Notable projects supported by this fund include the Harlem Youth Gardener Program founded during summer 2020 through a collaboration between Friends of Morningside Park Inc., Friends of St. Nicholas Park, Marcus Garvey Park Alliance, & Jackie Robinson Park Conservancy to engage neighborhood youth ages 14-19 in paid horticulture along with the Bronx River Alliance’s EELS Youth Internship Program and Volunteer Program to invite thousands of Bronxites to participate in stewardship of the parks lining the river banks. -

What are important to this work are the contributions and influence of nightlife subculture to greater New York City history through fashion, music, and art. I intend to prove that, in combination with the city’s gradual revanchism of neighborhood properties, the self-destructive nature of this after-hours sector has led to its own demise. -

It’s a win-win situation as this then enables us to reach visitors at the hugely influential Pro Light+Sound Frankfurt at the end of the month, with arguably the most important edition of The Edge we have yet published. Rich in coverage from North America, we are also proud to bring you some groundbreaking stories from around the world. In the hierarchy of pro audio installs little causes as much excitement as projects undertaken by Steve Dash (Integral Sound) and Austen Derek (Aurateq) — particularly to any of us old enough and fortunate enough to have experienced the original Richard Long sound system at Paradise Garage nearly 30 years ago. Therefore your first port of call should be to page 6 where the new 3,360-capacity Ministry of Sound in Singapore is awash with Martin Audio components specified by these master technicians. On the domestic front we have been kept busy covering The Strokes (with Capital Sound), Chris Rea (with RG Jones) and the new ‘Virtual’ Frank Sinatra season (with Autograph Sound) who have used our equipment as their main PA arrays at the London Palladium. Working from reclaimed archives, the show has presented a major restoration and time-coding challenge as the Sinatra voice is ‘synced’ to a live 24-piece orchestra and 35mm footage appears on nine different moving projection displays. -

Introduction LGBTQ+ History Month is a very important time to recognize and bring awareness to people of all genders and orientations. There are many events this month dedicated to the history of the LGBTQ+ community and its awareness. These events include: National Coming Out Day, Ally Week, Spirit Day, the first “March on Washington,” and the celebration of the life of Matthew Shepard, who was killed in a hate crime in 1998. The very first LGBTQ+ History Month was celebrated in 1994, and recognized as an official commemorative national month in 1995. As a sociology class, we want each person to feel represented and acknowledged at MSA. No gender, orientation, ethnicity, or race should go unrecognized. The intent of this project is to celebrate everyone, and bring about awareness that represents the LGBTQ+ community and their allies. Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was born on Franklin was struck with polio in 1921 and October 11, 1884 in New York City, New Eleanor Roosevelt as a result Eleanor decided to help his York. LGBT History Just like any other marginalized group that has had to fight for acceptance and equal rights, the LGBT community has a history of events that have impacted the community. This is a collection of some of the major happenings in the LGBT community during the 20th century through today. It is broken up into three sections: Pre-Stonewall, Stonewall, and Post-Stonewall. This is because the move toward equality shifted dramatically after the Stonewall Riots. Please note this is not a comprehensive list. Pre-Stonewall 1913 Alfred Redl, head of Austrian Intelligence, committed suicide after being identified as a Russian double agent and a homosexual. His widely-published arrest gave birth to the notion that homosexuals are security risks. 1919 Magnus Hirschfeld founded the Institute for Sexology in Berlin. One of the primary focuses of this institute was civil rights for women and gay people. 1933 On January 30, Adolf Hitler banned the gay press in Germany. In that same year, Magnus Herschfeld’s Institute for Sexology was raided and over 12,000 books, periodicals, works of art and other materials were burned. Many of these items were completely irreplaceable. 1934 Gay people were beginning to be rounded up from German-occupied countries and sent to concentration camps. Just as Jews were made to wear the Star of David on the prison uniforms, gay people were required to wear a pink triangle. WWII Becomes a time of “great awakening” for queer people in the United States. The homosocial environments created by the military and number of women working outside the home provide greater opportunity for people to explore their sexuality. -

SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2015 The calendar says the year is more than half for Officers changed from one to 2 years and the Bylaw Review process over, but at the Old Town Triangle Association, changed to 1-3 years verses every other month. the new year just began. Our budget and Our final “wrap up” is with our new budget. At the September 8th fiscal year started on August 1st and with Board Meeting, we are expected to vote on the 2016 budget that started that, we wrap up several activities from our August 1st. At this point, we expect to increase our Art Fair revenue by previous year. $30,000 by increasing our gate donation from $7 to $8 in addition to a As I said in the last newsletter, the Art Fair small increase in our artist booth fees. The net result is that our overall was a huge success from an event as well as budget will increase to $508,000 in revenue. This also means we have a financial stand point. The Art Fair this year the opportunity to increase the monies we budget for our programs. As produced $378,000 in revenue with $272,000 of today, we expect a significant increase in our spending to increase in profit. We had budgeted for a profit of membership. We expect a 16% increase in the monies allocated to our $259,000, which we exceeded by 5%. Of that number, 20% goes to the Neighborhood Improvements Committee and another 12% increase in Menomonee Club, which this year accounted for $54,000. -

"Disco Madness: Walter Gibbons and the Legacy of Turntablism and Remixology" Tim Lawrence Journal of Popular Music Studies, 20, 3, 2008, 276-329 This story begins with a skinny white DJ mixing between the breaks of obscure Motown records with the ambidextrous intensity of an octopus on speed. It closes with the same man, debilitated and virtually blind, fumbling for gospel records as he spins up eternal hope in a fading dusk. In between Walter Gibbons worked as a cutting-edge discotheque DJ and remixer who, thanks to his pioneering reel-to-reel edits and contribution to the development of the twelve-inch single, revealed the immanent synergy that ran between the dance floor, the DJ booth and the recording studio. Gibbons started to mix between the breaks of disco and funk records around the same time DJ Kool Herc began to test the technique in the Bronx, and the disco spinner was as technically precise as Grandmaster Flash, even if the spinners directed their deft handiwork to differing ends. It would make sense, then, for Gibbons to be considered alongside these and other towering figures in the pantheon of turntablism, but he died in virtual anonymity in 1994, and his groundbreaking contribution to the intersecting arts of DJing and remixology has yet to register beyond disco aficionados.1 There is nothing mysterious about Gibbons's low profile. First, he operated in a culture that has been ridiculed and reviled since the "disco sucks" backlash peaked with the symbolic detonation of 40,000 disco records in the summer of 1979.
