JOHN H. PAO FEC, P.Eng., Struct.Eng., S.E. Principal / President
Structural engineering has been John Pao’s passion since childhood. In addition to completing his engineering degrees from University of British Columbia, John worked in the construction industry and gained knowledge and experience as a developer and contractor. Early in his career, he worked in a multi-discipline design and construction environment. This experience gave him the breadth to understand that a good structural engineering solution is largely dependent on the structural engineer’s knowledge of the owner’s overall objectives and architectural design constraints. Combined with a true appreciation of the construction and erection challenges, John quickly gained a reputation of producing cost efficient structural engineering solutions that are simple and easy to construct. In 1985, John Pao led a small team of structural engineers to establish Bogdonov Pao Associates Ltd. Since its humble beginnings, John’s reputation of practical and cost effective structural engineering solutions became known in other regions and the firm expanded its practice to California and has completed a large variety of projects throughout North America and overseas. He has designed a variety of projects including large parking structures, high rise buildings, hospitals, air traffic control towers, seismic upgrade of buildings and recreational structures. Over the years, John has also developed innovative solutions for many difficult construction forming and erection projects including shoring for a few hundred high-rise buildings, bridges and tunnels, heavy concrete structures, and temporary structures. John’s dedication to high standards goes beyond his own company. He is a driving force behind several initiatives to enhance the structural engineering profession in British Columbia, and is the founding chair of the Certificate in Structural Engineering Program, a uniquely made in Vancouver program that offers a variety of courses to teach practicing structural engineers. John has presented papers at local and international conferences, lectured in seismic conferences and has taught Reinforced Concrete Design courses. In 2006, John co-authored a concrete design textbook that has been widely used at universities in engineering courses across the country.
PAUL A. TOMEI AScT Principal / Vice President Paul Tomei is vice president of Bogdonov Pao Associates Ltd. Paul brings a unique background in structural engineering design and construction, including tilt-up, wood frame, structural steel, high-rise and construction engineering. With considerable experience ranging from carpentry to operations superintendent, Paul prides himself on identifying practical, cost effective and creative solutions aimed at solving engineering and construction problems. His broad experience allows him to relate to the entire project team to address specific needs, requirements and limitations while remaining focused on accomplishing a common goal. Paul first obtained a Certificate of Carpentry Specialization in 1986 from the Pacific Vocational Institute followed by a Dipl. T. in Civil & Structural Engineering Technology in 1989 from the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Paul is committed to continuing professional development and later continued his education at BCIT in the Bachelor of Technology Management Program. He is registered with the Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of BC, as an Applied Science Technologist, and provides volunteer services as a Board of Examiner Reviewer. He is also a member of both the Accreditation Board and the Practice Review Board. In addition, Paul served on the joint Limited License Task Force for the Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists of BC, providing representation as a Non-Registered Engineering Supervisor. As Manager of Construction Engineering Services, Paul specializes in contractor/construction services, design/build management; structural design and inspections.
WALTER F. JANZEN FEC, P.Eng., P.E. Senior Engineer Walter Janzen is a senior engineer with Bogdonov Pao Associates Ltd. He obtained a Bachelor of Applied Science in 1978 and a Master of Applied Science in Structural Engineering in 1988 from the University of British Columbia. He is registered as a professional engineer in the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan, as well as in the states of Washington and Colorado. He is also registered as a Certified Professional in British Columbia. Early in his career, Walter was employed as a research engineer at the University of British Columbia, Department of Civil Engineering, where he developed innovative computer programs for simplification of engineering design processes. He subsequently joined Dominion Construction, a prominent design/build company, where he developed an acknowledged expertise in the design of tilt-up construction. Since joining Bogdonov Pao in 2002, Walter has been responsible for a large number of projects, including the new $250 million Royal Jubilee Hospital Patient Care Centre. As a senior engineer, he has been a valuable resource for enhancing the company's capabilities in conceptual design, analysis, and quality control.
GARRY R. KIRKHAM P.Eng., Struct.Eng. Senior Engineer Garry Kirkham is a senior engineer with Bogdonov Pao Associates Ltd. In 1979, he obtained a Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering from the University of British Columbia. Since then, he has continued to supplement his degree with further education at BCIT and UBC, including the Certified Professional Program. Throughout his career, Garry has designed a wide variety of structures including large concrete high-rise buildings such as the Bentall IV and CIBC Bank Tower. Garry is a recognized expert in structural steel design, having spent five years acting as the chief structural engineer with a leading structural steel fabricator. The structural steel fabrication industry continues to seek his consultation on matters relating to steel joist design. Since joining Bogdonov Pao Associates in 1994, Garry has been responsible for a variety of design projects, including structural steel, reinforced concrete, post-tensioned concrete, masonry, and wood structures. Additionally, Garry is highly capable in software development, having produced much of BPA Group's in-house software for structural steel and concrete design. This software sets the firm apart in designing structures that are practical, constructible, and cost efficient. Garry is also the author of software systems used by leading manufacturers in Vancouver. The open web steel joist software he developed has automated structural design and drafting facilities.
MICHAEL C. BROAD P.E., C.Eng. Principal / Senior Engineer Michael Broad is a principal with the BPA Group of Companies, as well as the director of BPA Group’s Irvine California office. Michael has gained over 40 years of practical experience in structural engineering in London England, Atlanta Georgia, and Southern California. He graduated from Ewell College in England and completed the Chartered Member Institution of Structural Engineers in 1971. Michael is registered as a Professional Engineer in five States as well as a Chartered Structural Engineer in Great Britain. Michael has been involved in the design, development, supervision, and construction of numerous diversified project types including parking facilities, residential and commercial spaces, and institutional structures. He has designed several structural steel, concrete-framed, and concrete masonry projects in the commercial, office, and industrial sectors. Michael also has considerable experience in seismic engineering, having been involved with several seismic-related projects in California, including the design of numerous retrofit buildings in Southern California following the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Michael is recognized for his experience with reinforced concrete structures, particularly in the area of post- tensioned concrete buildings and mat slab foundations. He is an industry leader in parking structure engineering, having completed numerous parking buildings both as a chief structural engineer and as a parking consultant during his combined seven years of service with Walker Parking Consultants and International Parking Design firms.
