Having reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in each of the last three seasons, Real Madrid CF will look to continue their progress as FC Schalke 04 visit in the round of 16 second leg. • Madrid – in the round of 16 for the 11th successive season – were the competition's leading scorers in the group stage with 20 goals. Cristiano Ronaldo contributed nine, a group stage record. • The German side, who ensured their qualifying place with a matchday six victory, are in the knockout rounds for the second successive season – the first time they have managed that feat. • Schalke, however, look certain to progress no further after Madrid continued their scoring spree in the first leg, Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema all scoring twice in a 6-1 success. Previous meetings • Madrid have lost only twice on the 25 occasions they have hosted German visitors in the Spanish capital, with 19 wins and four draws. Last season they recorded a 2-0 win against Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals but it was not enough to wipe out a 4-1 first-leg defeat. • Since FC Bayern München's 1-0 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu in the 2000/01 semi-final – the German club went on to win 3-1 on aggregate – Madrid have won seven and drawn two of their nine games at home to German sides. • Bayern also won 4-2 at the Bernabéu in the 1999/2000 second group stage and are the only team to have prevailed at the ground. In the 2011/12 semi-final Madrid beat Bayern 2-1 in the home second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final but lost the penalty shoot-out that followed. • Madrid have defeated three German sides in European finals, beating 7-3 in the 1960 European Cup and Leverkusen 2-1 in the 2002 UEFA Champions League, both in Glasgow; they also overcame 1. FC Köln 5-3 on aggregate in the 1986 UEFA Cup. • Madrid's record in two-legged ties with German clubs in UEFA competition is W11 L8. • The first-leg reverse means Schalke have won only two of their last 14 encounters against Spanish opponents, suffering seven defeats. In 12 away games against Liga clubs their record is W2 D5 L5; they have not won in their last seven games, since a 3-0 victory at RCD Espanyol in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup round of 32. • The Royal Blues have twice faced Spanish teams in knockout ties in the last four years, beating Valencia CF 3-1 at home after a 1-1 draw away in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League round of 16 en route to the semi-finals. In the 2011/12 UEFA Cup quarter-finals, Schalke lost 4-2 at home to Athletic Club and then drew 2-2 away. • Madrid have lost only one of the 28 UEFA competition ties in which they have won the first leg away from home. The sole exception came against Odense BK in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup third round when a 3-2 away success preceded a 2-0 home reverse. • Schalke have lost all three ties in which they went down at home in the first leg, and avoided defeat in only one of those second legs – the most recent, that 2-2 draw at Athletic Club in 2011/12. Match background • Ronaldo set the tone for Group B with a matchday one hat-trick as Madrid won 6-1 at Galatasaray AŞ. The Spanish club won all three home games, beating FC København 4-0, Juventus 2-1 and Galatasaray 4-1. • In Group E Schalke won 1-0 at FC Basel 1893 but then lost 3-0 away to Chelsea FC and shared a goalless draw with FC Steaua Bucureşti. • Madrid have won 13 – including the last five – and drawn two of their 15 UEFA Champions League home games since a 2-0 defeat by FC Barcelona in the 2010/11 semi-finals. Schalke have lost just two of their last 14 European away fixtures. • In the 2012/13 last 16, Madrid were held 1-1 at home by Manchester United FC, Ronaldo on target against his former club. The Portuguese scored the decisive goal at Old Trafford after Luka Modrić had cancelled out Sergio Ramos' own goal. • Schalke lost in last season's round of 16, despite earning a 1-1 draw at Galatasaray. Roman Neustädter was on target in the Gelsenkirchen return, but his team went down 3-2. • Madrid's shoot-out record in UEFA club competition is: 1-3 v FC Bayern München, 2011/12 UEFA Champions League semi-finals 3-1 v Juventus, 1986/87 European Cup second round 5-6 v FK Crvena zvezda, 1974/75 European Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals • Schalke's shoot-out record is:

Khedira's first two Bundesliga goals came against Schalke in a 3-0 home win on 29 October 2006; he scored 14 goals in 98 league games for Stuttgart. • Daniel Carvajal faced Schalke twice last season while on Leverkusen's books, winning one and drawing the other. 12 Real Madrid CF - FC Schalke 04 Tuesday 18 March 2014 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Match press kit Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid Head coach Real Madrid CF: Carlo Ancelotti Date of birth: 10 June 1959 Nationality: Italian Playing career: Parma FC, AS Roma, AC Milan Coaching career: AC Reggiana, Parma FC, Juventus, AC Milan, Chelsea FC, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid CF • One of only six people to have lifted the European Champion Clubs' Cup as both a player and coach. A combative midfielder, he helped Roma win the 1983 Serie A title and four Italian Cups before joining Milan in 1986 where he added two more league championships, as well as back-to-back European Cup triumphs in 1989 and 1990. • Began coaching in 1995 with a year at Reggiana, earning them promotion from Serie B, before two seasons at Parma. Replaced Marcello Lippi at Juventus in February 1999 and returned to San Siro as coach of Milan in 2001. • During eight seasons in charge, won the UEFA Champions League in 2003 and 2007, but lost the 2005 final on penalties to Liverpool FC after leading 3-0. Milan also won a Serie A title, a Coppa Italia and the 2007 FIFA Club World Cup. • Resigned on 31 May 2009 and was named as Chelsea's new manager the following day. His first season in London ended with the club winning the league and cup double for the first time. Dismissed at the end of his second campaign, Ancelotti took charge of Paris in December 2011. • In his one full season in the French capital, 2012/13, Ancelotti steered Paris to their first Ligue 1 title in 19 years before leaving to take over at Madrid on a three-year contract, winning the Copa del Rey in his first season. FC Schalke 04: Jens Keller Date of birth: 24 November 1970 Nationality: German Playing career: VfL Wangen, VfB Stuttgart (twice), TSV 1860 München, VfL Wolfsburg, 1. FC Köln, Eintracht Frankfurt Coaching career: VfB Stuttgart (youth), VfB Stuttgart, FC Schalke 04 (youth), FC Schalke 04 • Having risen through Stuttgart's youth department, Keller made his first and only Bundesliga appearance in 1990 before leaving for third-tier 1860 München, where he helped the club to win promotion to the second and then first divisions. • A fringe player in the Bundesliga, he moved to second division Wolfsburg and again won promotion, subsequently becoming a top-flight regular and earning a return to Stuttgart, where he played in the 1998/99 UEFA Cup. • Joined Köln in 2000 but relegated two years later, prompting a switch to Eintracht, whom he helped into the Bundesliga only to miss most of the season with cartilage damage; relegation and further injury problems led to retirement in 2005. • Took over Stuttgart's Under-19 side in 2008/09 and became Christian Gross's assistant with the first team in December 2009; the following October, replaced Gross as head coach but lasted only two months before making way for Bruno Labbadia, although Keller continued to work for the club as a scout. • Appointed Schalke's U17 coach in summer 2012; on 16 December that year he stepped up to the senior side following Huub Stevens' departure and took the club to fourth place and a UEFA Champions League berth.
