Dear Sponsors, Supporters and Well-Wishers of Srīvalī High School,

Jai Shaṅkar!

Further to my communication in the previous year’s Annual report, I write to you at a time when the entire world is going through a renewed upheaval due to the resurgent coronavirus pandemic. The functioning of your school was and still is severely affected.

The School was closed with effect from 23rd March 2020, in view of the strict lockdown. After a long period of the pandemic it seemed that, with the vaccines becoming available, matters would start improving, especially since administering the vaccines to the designated group of citizens had commenced in right earnest. However, even as I write to you, there has been a resurgence of the pandemic with newer and deadlier strains of the mutated virus infecting thousands in India. Schools which had re-opened in January 2021 have once again been affected with closure of classes up to the 9th standard.

The 10th standard students alone have been allowed to attend school. No examinations are proposed to be held except for the SSLC Board examinations. With the 2nd wave of the pandemic upon us, it is not certain when these exams will be held.

Despite the severe gloom over the pandemic and despite the school having been closed for the better part of the year, the Academic Year 2020-21 has been a highly inspiring one for all of us at Srīvalī School... the students, teachers, the administration and the trustees.

“It should not matter how slowly some children learn, as long as we are encouraging them not to stop” – Robert John Meehan In keeping with the spirit of this quote, our school teachers participated whole-heartedly in the Vidyāgama programme introduced by the Karnāṭaka Government, whereby school students and teachers were encouraged to meet, periodically, at a common place and interact. Since the schools were closed, this program provided an opportunity for the teachers to interact with the students, teach them, clarify their doubts and encourage the students to study at home through homework and other assignments. In the absence of a suitable space and with requisite permissions from the authorities, our school conducted this programme at the school premises itself.

We are extremely grateful to have received funds from our munificent donors - Kulkarṇī Foundation of USA, the Chitrāpur Heritage Foundation of USA, Ms. Uchil Ashwinī Uday and numerous other sponsors. We sincerely look forward to a continued and enhanced level of such financial support.

We have an outstanding team of people working hard to make sure that Srīvalī High School becomes one of the top schools at the District- level and we have complete confidence that this will be achieved in the coming years.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my colleagues on the Board of Trustees, the Sponsors and Donors, the School Administration and the Senior Leadership team for their unstinted support and above all, Parama Pūjya Sadyojāt Shaṅkarāshram Swāmījī for His continuous Guidance and Blessings.

With warm personal regards,

Praveeṇ KaḍĪe Page 2 of 24

B) Performance

Recap  The school was closed from 23rd March, 2020 due to the raging pandemic.  Exams for the 8th and 9th standards, for 2019-20 , could not be held due to the lockdown and as per the Directions from the Board of Education, students were promoted to the next standard on basis of Students Achievements Tracking System (SATS) – this is the internal assessment of the students’ performance during the academic year.  The SSLC Board exams for 2019-20 were held from 25th June to 3rd July, 2020.  A very successful year for the school. Our school has retained its position as one of the leading schools in the Uttara Kannaḍa District.  Despite the uncertainties due to the pandemic the school has achieved an impressive 95.68% pass rate in the SSLC Board Examination for 2019-'20 as compared to 97.27% in 2018-'19. During the current Academic Year  Even as uncertainty prevailed over the re-opening of schools due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Karnāṭaka State, in the absence of physical classes, has introduced a new teaching/learning mode named Vidyāgama. This mode is primarily for those students who do not have reliable access to internet nor have facilities to participate in online classes.

 As per the scheme, the teachers, who had been hitherto asked to Work from Home, were required to come to the schools, sign the attendance register and then go to meet the students at select points close to their (students’) place of stay and engage them in academic activities. For the sake of convenience and after obtaining approvals from the authorities, the Vidyāgama scheme in our school was held in the school premises.

 As per the concept, the teachers after virtually engaging the children and their parents, ask the children to gather in batches of 10 to 15 at a suitable location. All the children are asked to wear face masks, undergo thermal screening and maintain physical distancing. After the children assemble at the informed time, the teachers visit the spot and engage them in academic activities at least for two hours a day, teaching them common subjects such as science, mathematics, social science and English.

 Vidyāgama 1st phase started from August 2020 to December 2020.

 Vidyāgama 2nd phase started from January 2021 to 14th February, 2021.

 During Vidyāgama the school conducted FA-1, FA-2 (Formative assessment) and SA-1 (Summative Assesment) Examination for our students.

 Schools re-opened from 1st January, 2021 and from 15.02.2021 the school conducted full- day class for 8th and 9th standard students.

 The Karnāṭaka Education Board, Bangalore has announced that the S.S.L.C. Exam will be held from 21st June to 5th July, 2021. The Karnāṭaka S.S.L.C. Exam time- table 2020-21 is as follows: Date Subject 21.06.2021 Kannaḍa 24.06.2021 Maths 28.06.2021 Science 30.06.2021 Hindi 02.07.2021 English 05.07.2021 Social Science

 The school students are already preparing earnestly for the upcoming S.S.L.C. board exam. Page 5 of 24

The 8th and 9th standard students have already participated in learning activities during Vidyāgama in our school.

 The Covid-19 warriors, which include the police and healthcare personnel, have been the front runners in this battle. But one category of warriors which also need to be acknowledged is - the teachers. Teachers had to tackle multiple issues right from getting accustomed to new teaching technologies to ensuring that the expected learning outcome from the students is met. It is time for us to recognise the hard work put in by the teaching community.

Resurgent Pandemic in 2021  As per the latest Government order on 3rd April 2021, classes for 6th to 9th students have been closed again due to the resurgent pandemic.  The future educational progress and promotion of students depends on the decision taken by the Education Department and the Government. Our school is awaiting the Government’s decision.  In all the chaos amidst the pandemic, our teachers helmed by the school headmistress have put in immense efforts to impart subject-wise lessons to the students keeping within the guidelines of social distancing and other norms. We owe a big thank-you to all our teachers who are no less than the other Corona Warriors !

Vocational Training Centre  Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the activities of the Vocational Training Centre remained suspended for the entire year.  It is hoped that the activities can commence in the forthcoming academic year 2021-22.

Proposed Vocational Training Institute

Since the year 2016, with the Blessings of Parama Pūjya Swāmījī, the Trustees of Srīvalī Trust have been exploring the prospects of commencing a Vocational Training Institute in Srīvalī High School so that the students of the school and others who prefer to opt for job- oriented vocational training will have sufficient avenues to pursue their career. In 2017, Shrī Harin Haṭṭaṅgaḍy approached Swāmījī with his proposal to commence a basic vocational skills training centre in the school and Parama Pūjya Swāmījī immediately gave the go-ahead to commence the Vocational Skills Training Centre. Thus, on 1st July, 2017 Parama Pūjya Swāmījī inaugurated the Vocational Training Centre housed in the existing school premises. This centre has been performing very well ever since. The Trustees were also on the look-out for availability of suitable premises, both to set up a full -fledged Vocational Training Institute and to cater to the growing needs of the School. Towards the end of 2017, the Trust identified a very suitable and convenient plot of land comprising 19 guṇṭa-s and having a building already constructed on the plot, right next to the existing School premises. This was owned by Smt Shyāmalā Pombhatmajal. Upon approaching Smt.Shyāmalā Pombhatmajal pāchī, she immediately evinced interest in selling the plot and the infrastructure on the plot to Srīvalī Trust and a fair price of Rs.1.5 crores was negotiated. After due diligence and completion of related formalities, the property was acquired by your Trust in 2020, thanks to a generous grant for the entire amount from the Kulkarṇī Foundation, USA.

The Kulkarṇī Foundation, USA, so devotedly supportive of our school since its inception, when informed about the proposed project, immediately evinced interest in sponsoring the entire cost of the project (acquiring the land and infrastructure and renovation of the building) and has already remitted funds to the tune of approx. Rs 1.47 crores (USD 200000). Another 50 lakhs sought from the Kulkarṇī Foundation for renovation of the existing building will be sent by them soon.

The Board of Trustees would like to place on record their gratitude to the Kulkarṇī Foundation for their consistent support to the school .Without their generous donation it would have been difficult for Srīvalī Trust to implement this project.

As per the new Education Policy of the Central Government (NEP 2020), emphasis has to be laid on Skill Development courses to be implemented in schools starting from 6th Standard. We will Page 11 of 24

have to implement this in our School too. To quote “NEP 2020 recognizes that the vocational education is perceived to be inferior to mainstream education. Hence, this policy aims to overcome the social status hierarchy associated with vocational education and requires integration of vocational education programmes into mainstream education in all education institutions in a phased manner. Towards this, secondary schools will also collaborate with ITIs, polytechnics, local industry, etc. Skill labs will also be set up and created in the schools in a hub and spoke model which will allow other schools to use the facility.”

NEP has also mandated vocational education in the early stage of education with the introduction of fun courses in Standards 6–8 and later giving opportunities to students to develop further through vocational courses in Standards 9–12 and higher vocational education.

Srīvalī High School has a great head start with regard to providing vocation-related fun-courses, with the Vocational Skills Training Centre set up since 2017-18 already providing such courses to students in the 8th and 9th Standards in carpentry, basics of plumbing and electrical fittings. The school also has a very good Art Class, which can be one of the multi- disciplinary approaches recommended under the NEP.

Currently CBSE Curriculum offers a range of 38 skill courses for students from the 6th to 12th Standards and if adopted by the State Government, Srīvalī School will also need to include these courses as elective subjects.

The Trust is awaiting the final guidelines for implementation, from the State Government, for the vocational training institute with the aim of commencing operations by the academic year 2022. The suggested implentation plan NEP-2020,by the Govt has recommended that there should be no hard seperation of curricular, co-curricular or extra-curricular areas and also the integration of vocational and academic streams---each subject will have an equal status. The State Government guidelines for implementation, are expected to also cover the transition proposal for moving to English as the medium of instruction from the existing Kannaḍa medium.

The Srīvalī Trust proposes to take the following steps immediately, upon getting State Govt. guidelines on the transition process:

ON THE ACADEMIC / PEDAGOGY FRONT:

Appoint an Advisory Board or an Academic Advisor, to guide as well as oversee the process of transition-

 Increase English language content from the 9th Standard onwards in stages, in order to move to English as the medium of instruction.  Schedule and implement teacher re-training / pedagogy, both for language skills and to develop core competence in students in order to face the new Board exams.  Recruitment of teachers with required skills to teach the 11th and 12th Standards.  Recruitment of a Principal, if required.  Co-ordinate with the Vocational Education Team to introduce Elective Vocational courses, recruit teachers with requisite skills and introduce the pedagogy required for these courses.

ON THE VOCATIONAL EDUCATION FRONT:

Appoint an Advisor – Vocational Education, to guide and support the Head Mistress/ Principal., who will- Page 12 of 24

 Co-ordinate with the Internal Vocational Training Group already set up.  Identify, from the following sources, the most relevant Vocational Courses (which have the potential for further Certification / Diploma and Under- Graduate Courses.) to be made available as Elective subject for Standards 9, 10, 11 and 12. a) Base Courses from the CBSE Curriculum, which are already designed and likely to be adopted by the NCERT. b) Work done so far by the Internal Vocational Training Group. A short list of courses have been identified by this group. c) Skill Gap Study conducted by NSDC. d) Interactions with the industry and service sectors who may wish to set up special training facilities and offer placement.

The capital equipment and space requirements for the identified /shortlisted vocational courses will be worked out and funds to implement the same will then need to be raised.

With your continued support, the future promises to be a truly exciting and meaningful experience for the students of Srīvalī Trust.
