LUNCHEON KEYNOTE JACKIE KALLEN

JACKIE KALLEN is the world’s most successful female manager. She fought against all odds to prevail in a male-dominated profession. A journalist-turned publicist for and ’s Kronk Boxing Team, Kallen spent ten years learning the ropes of the boxing world. As a manager, she groomed to become a world champion shortly after launching her business. At the podium, Kallen reveals her secrets to overcome adversity in all forms-sexism, discrimination and even life-threatening illness-to triumph overall.

Kallen, a writer since elementary school, had a colorful career before she ever met a boxer. An entertainment journalist who interviewed everyone from the Rolling Stones to Elvis and Sinatra, her work led her from hometown Detroit to and back home to raise her family. A 1977 interview with six-time world champion boxer Thomas Hearns set her on her path, beginning as a publicist for him and the legendary Kronk Boxing Team. For ten years Kallen learned the ins and outs of the business. By 1988, she was ready to strike out on her own, managing fighters including a scrappy you man named James “Lights Out” Toney. Three years after she started managing him, Toney was a champ and Jackie was on top of the game. Still, despite two nominations for Manager of the Year, a stint as commissioner of the Female Boxers Association and a wall full of awards and honors, Kallen continues to fight for acceptance.

Jackie is the author of Hit Me with Your Best Shot: A Fight Plan for Dealing with All of Life’s Hard Knocks. She is also driven to raise awareness about women’s health issues, specifically the early detection of heart decease and breast cancer. Retired U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Judith K. Fitzgerald has been blessed with an exciting, challenging and intellectually stimulating career. As a Judicial Law Clerk, Assistant U.S. Attorney, Bankruptcy Judge, Professor of Law, Practitioner at Tucker Arensberg, Arbitrator, Mediator, Author and Expert Witness, she has experienced a wide variety of legal disciplines and administrative responsibilities. Judi is a Professor in the Practice of Law at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where she teaches Bankruptcy and Advanced Bankruptcy. She is active in national and local professional organizations including the Commercial Law League of America, the American Law Institute, the American College of Bankruptcy and the American Inns of Court. Among other offices, and has served as President of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges and as Chair of the Bankruptcy Judges Advisory Committee to the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. She has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America, Bankruptcy and Creditor Debtor Rights / Insolvency and Reorganization Law and received honorable mention by Law360 as one of the top ten Bankruptcy Judges in History. Judi has received numerous awards and recognitions. Judi consults and lectures in matters involving trial strategy, evidence, procedure, contracts, bankruptcy and professional responsibility, and participates on several committees and boards dedicated to fostering legal education and improving access to justice. RICHARD LEVIN Co-chair of Jenner & Block’s Restructuring and Bankruptcy Department

RICHARD LEVIN is co-chair of Jenner & Block’s Restructuring and Bankruptcy Department. He served on the staff of the House Judiciary Committee, where he was an author of the 1978 U.S. Bankruptcy Code. He is recognized internationally as one of the foremost restructuring, bankruptcy, and creditor-debtor rights lawyers handling complex bankruptcy litigation, transaction, and special situation matters.

Mr. Levin has served as counsel to parties in nearly every position in a bankruptcy case in a wide range of industries, including auto and manufacturing, banking and finance, energy and electric utilities, hospitality, municipal and government finance, technology, electronics, telecommunications, gaming, retail, shipping, defense, and agriculture, in both domestic and cross-border situations. He has acted as a chapter 11 trustee and as an examiner. He also worked as a senior executive at a publicly traded company.

Mr. Levin served as Chair of the National Bankruptcy Conference and is a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. He was a consultant to the World Bank and the Central Bank of Brazil on Brazil’s 2005 bankruptcy legislation. He has served as a faculty member at the Federal Judicial Center’s Bankruptcy Judge Workshops for 18 years and was a lecturer in law at Harvard Law School. Mr. Levin has repeatedly been recognized as one of the country’s leading practitioners of bankruptcy and creditor-debtor rights law by, among others, Chambers USA and Chambers Global, Best Lawyers in America, and Benchmark Litigation.

SAMUEL R. MAIZEL

SAMUEL R. MAIZEL is a partner in Dentons US LLP’s Los Angeles office. Sam's practice focuses on restructuring, insolvency and bankruptcy, in- and out-of-court in all industries, but he leads the firm's healthcare industry restructuring efforts nationwide. He has served as lead bankruptcy counsel to debtors and creditors committees in chapters 9 and 11 cases, as well as having served as counsel to chapter 7 and chapter 11 trustees, as an Examiner, chapter 11 Trustee, Patient Care Ombudsman, and Consumer Privacy Ombudsman. He is currently lead counsel in the pending chapter 11 bankruptcy of Verity Health System of California, Inc., and 15 related companies, the second largest hospital bankruptcy in American history. Before joining Dentons, Sam was a partner at a national bankruptcy boutique firm (1997-2015), and previous to that he represented the federal government nationwide as a trial attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice's Commercial Litigation Branch (1991-1996). He has also served in U.S. Army's The Judge Advocate General's Corps (1985-1991), including service in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, as well as an Infantry Officer in the U.S. Army (1977-1985). Sam has lectured extensively, is widely published, and been interviewed on television and radio on topics related to the healthcare industry and bankruptcy. Among many other honors, he is a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy, is ranked in Chambers in both Bankruptcy and Healthcare, and has regularly been named a "Super Lawyer" in an annual region-wide peer survey. Sam has his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center (1985); an M.A. from Georgetown University (1983); and a B.S. from the United States Military Academy at West Point (1977).
