46 KEENELAND FALL 2012 Country LIFE By Alexandra Beckstett | Photos by Lee Thomas Settling at Shawnee Farm Allows Sally and Watts Humphrey to Indulge Their Passion for Horses Full-Time eorge Watts Humphrey Jr. has an im- measurable love for horses. He heads G several successful companies and serves on numerous boards, but at 68 there’s nowhere he’d rather be than at the track watch- ing a horse train or in the foaling barn while his next potential stakes winner takes its first breath. KEENELAND FALL 2012 47 Country LIFE “As a girl, I used to pray I would marry someone who loved horses as much as I did. But I married someone who loves horses more than me.” – Sally Humphrey And while the congenial Humphrey and his wife, Sally, are well known among Thoroughbred enthusiasts as breeders of the 1980 Kentucky Derby winner Genuine Risk, 1985 Belmont Stakes winner Crème Fraiche, and other champions, Watts will be the first to say ”Every horse is special.” Like most breeders, Humphrey’s end goal is to produce and race high-caliber horses, but watching his homebreds trans- form from foals to athletes is one of his biggest thrills. “We love to be there when they foal, and we love to see them develop,” he said. As a third-generation horseman, Humphrey has Thorough- breds in his blood. Sally, on the other hand, cultivated her equine interest by joining the 4-H club and attending The Orme School, a 26,000-acre working ranch in central Arizona, growing up. “As a girl, I used to pray I would marry someone who loved Watts Humphrey enjoys all aspects of breeding and raising horses as much as I did.

Cuomo, Governor of the State of New York Members of the New York State Legislature On behalf of the Board of Directors of the New York State Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund Corporation, I am pleased to present this annual report for 2014. This filing shows that the Thoroughbred breeding industry in the Empire State continues to make strides in recovering from the declines that affected the industry nationwide beginning several years ago. In fulfilling its mission to “support by monetary incentives the responsible breeding of quality Thoroughbred racehorses in keeping with the founding legislation to preserve New York’s irreplaceable farm land,” the Fund herein lays out all revenue, award payments, research funding, promotional spending and operational improvements made over the course of the year. The reputation of NY-breds was further enhanced during 2014 due to the performances of NY-breds in both restricted and open-company races, and was topped by the Breeders’ Cup turf win by Dayatthespa who was voted Eclipse Turf winner in mid-January of 2015.

Four-year-old has won two of her three starts since joining the barn of Graham Motion including one at this distance at Gulfstream in March. Barn wins with 25% of runners that have not raced for 46-90 days and with 14% in graded stakes and four-year-old can be running late and may surprise with Eddie Castro in the saddle. 6 Artemus Kitten 8/1 Five-year-old comes off a third place finish over a mile in a stakes at Indiana after a tough trip in mid-June and is first on BRIS Prime Power. Daughter of excellent turf sire Kitten’s Joy has won five of her fifteen starts on grass for trainer Mike Maker who wins with 21% of his runners on turf and who has won with 26% of his starters since the beginning of the year. Chestnut has some tactical sped and should not be far from the leaders from the start with Julien Leparoux aboard.

Natural AFFINITY Jockey James Graham Finds His Best Stride at Keeneland By Claire Novak | Photos By Kirk Schlea ou won’t see jockey James Graham standing railside at Keeneland while the rhythms of morning training pass him by. The 34-year-old Irishman is Y best found on the back of a horse, whether helping trainers with day-to- day exercise or sending potential mounts through pre-race breezes. On an average day in Lexington, he’ll likely get on six to eight Thoroughbreds before heading off to the jockeys’ room to prepare for the afternoon card. Hard-working and energetic, Graham has never been one to shirk the building- block tasks that lead to success. That’s how he has shaped his reputation since arriv- ing in the Bluegrass 10 years ago, coming to North America in search of opportunities that evaded him in his native Ireland. Then, he was confident he could do two things — ride horses and work hard — and he set about convincing owners and trainers to believe the same. “I’ve been around James from when he first came onto the scene; he had just come over from Ireland and he was just galloping and working horses,” said trainer Mike Stidham, one of the jockey’s longtime fans. “My first impression was that I’d never seen a harder worker, there every morning, getting on as many as he could get on from the minute the track opened until the minute the track closed. “His work ethic has never changed, no matter how good he’s done.
