Abstract: The introduced snail Ovachlamys fulgens (Stylommatophora: Heliearionidae) oeeurs on cultivated land habitats in Costa Rica, where its macrodistribution seems to be limited by annual mean temperature (20 - 27.6°C) and annual preeipitation (1 530 - 3 034 and 3 420 - 8 000 mm, with no more than six dry months). This species can be found in ¡itter and on vegetation up to 70 cm tal\. Randomquadrat field sampling was done in leaf litter and understory plants every three months for a total of five dates inCentral Costa Rica. At least 150 plots of 2Sx25 cm were analyzed on each date. Abundance of living specimens andeggs was positively correlated with (1) litter abundance anddepth, (2) litter and soil humidity, (3) relative humidity and (4) earlymoming tempera ture (6:30 AM), and negatively correlated with temperature later in the moming (10:00 AM). Besides these fac tors, living snail abundance was eorrelated with thickness of the herbaeeous vegetation and with the oeeurrence of fueca elephantiphes (in litter and understory). Egg abundanee was also correlated with the sampling date, apparentlybecause of changes in humídity. The correlationpattem of shell abundance was opposite to that of liv ing specimens. -

Stange, [email protected], Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, Division of Plant Industry INTRODUCTION: Several snail and slug species are of potential agricultural importance to Florida: two species are not yet found in Florida, one is a recent introduction still confined to South Florida and two are established in Florida and present a quarantine issue. Veronicella sloanei (Cuvier) Family: Veronicellidae (Fig. 1) ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE: This species attacks a wide variety of agricultural and horticultural plants including banana, plantain, various beans and peas, peanut, eggplant, cultivars of Brassica (e.g., broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower), carrot, hot and sweet peppers, various citrus species, lettuce, sweet potato, dasheen, eddo, tannia, tomato, and yam. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERS: When extended, this slug can attain a length of 12 cm (5 in.). It is highly variable in coloration and positive identification depends on dissection and inspection of the genitalia. It is usually very pale in color, ranging from mottle pale yellow, cream to white. It may have irregular black spotting or speckling all over the dorsal surface that may coalesce into two poorly defined bands running down either side of the body; in the juveniles, these two bands may be clearer and better defined as grey bands, especially anteriorly. Occasionally the snail can be mostly brownish. The only constant color character among different Carribean island populations is the eye stalk which is bluish grey with the tip light brown. -

We recorded the species in 2015 and 2017 in the municipalities of Santos and São Vicente in the metropolitan region of Baixada Santista, São Paulo state, southeastern Brazil. We found the species in an urban park and in a secondary forest altered by exotic plants. As this species is considered a pest and is capable of transmitting disease to humans, we propose that urgent measures be taken by the Brazilian government to control its populations. For Tornatellides cf. boeningi (Schmacker & Boettger, 1891) and Ovachlamys fulgens (Gude, 1900) this is the first observed occurrence in a European greenhouse, while Discostrobilops hubbardi (Brown, 1861) was first reported very recently in the Vienna Botanical garden. Tornatellides and Discostrobilops seem to be spread with orchid culture and trade. Identification of the Tornatellides species proved extremely difficult and a genetic sequence-based approach completely failed due to the unavailability of reference data. This was unexpected considering the importance of these introduced species in horticultural trade. A broader assessment of available sequence data for genetic identification based on COI or 16S for other snail species reported from horticultural facilities showed that such reference data in GenBank are still scarce and only for a limited number of species this approach would support identification. Thirty-seven nominal species described by Pfeiffer, Adams, Nevill, Moellendorff, Godwin-Austen and Gude were traced. I present here information on type status, collection data obtained from the registers and labels of each collection, and annotations on the current taxonomic affiliation. Lectotypes of 28 nominal (sub)species were newly designated. One holotype was fixed originally and two holotypes newly fixed by monotypy. Syntypes of two species and paralectotypes of three species were also discovered in the Museum. No specimen of the species Pupina adamsi Sowerby, 1878, which was supposed to be deposited in the NHM, was found. Pictures of the name-bearing types are provided for further research on biodiversity of the island. -

Yeung Bishop Museum, Malacology Research Center, 1525 Bernice St., Honolulu, HI 96817-2704 Cell:808-228-0849 Email: [email protected] Overview: Hawaii has more recorded, established non-indigenous land snails (NILS; which includes slugs and semi-slugs) than any other island chain or archipelago in the Pacific (Cowie 2001). Many are agricultural and/or horticultural pests and pose a threat to natural ecosystems through competition, predation, and herbivory (Joe and Daehler 2008, Curry et al. 2016). They are also a public health risk and threaten food security as vectors of disease-causing parasites, including Rat Lung Worm (RLW), Angiostrongylus cantonensis, (Kim et al. 2014, 2018). The aim of the current project was to determine which species of non-indigenous land snails (NILS) are established in horticultural/agricultural facilities Hawaii and assess their distributions via five objectives: 1) Complete 18 surveys for NILS in horticultural/agricultural facilities across four Hawaiian Islands (Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Big Island) 2) Compare these survey data with historical records to identify newly established species and identify NILS that pose the most serious threats to agriculture, native ecosystems, and public health 3) Develop an online guide with information about each of the established NILS in the Hawaiian Islands, including distribution, updated taxonomy, digital images, threats, and ecological data. 4) Organize and teach a taxonomic workshop on the NILS of Hawaii 5) Screen invasive snails for Rat Lungworm (RLW) and identify hotspots of likely disease transmission based on modeling by Kim et al 2018. -

It is based on a review of the literature from 1862 through 2001, excluding species not specif- ically reported for Costa Rica (e.g. those ambiguously reported for “ Central America”). There are a total of 183 species and subspecies reported (11 doubtful identifications), belonging to 25 families and 59 genera. The most diverse families are Spiraxidae with 33 (but 8 are doubtful identificartions) species and subspecies, Orthalicidae with 30 (1 is a doubtful identification), Subulinidae with 23, Helicinidae with 17 and Helicarionidae with 15. The groups with most urgent need for additional biodiversity study are the small species, specially the families Helicarionidae, Systrophiidae, and Zonitidae and the genus Spiraxis and Streptostyla.
