English language. doi: 10.1386/ijis.19.1.73/3 Lester Ziffren and the road to war in Spain David Wurtzel City University, London Abstract Keywords On the night of 17 July 1936, Lester Ziffren, the United Press correspondent in Ziffren Madrid, broke the news of Franco’s uprising. Within 36 hours the Spanish civil Spain war had begun. Ziffren had been the UP representative for three years. During civil war journalism that time his diaries, radio broadcasts and articles plotted the gathering political Franco Hemingway crisis. These documents and the author’s conversations with him tell the story of a young journalist, imbued with his principles of getting to the objective truth, who level-headedly reported on a country in which there was increasingly no middle ground, and who moved from the Hemingway circle of artists and bull- fighters to the political elite and to a social life spent among the grandees. He vividly describes the road to war through industrial and political conflict, and as a correspondent he reported on the horror of modern warfare while not being allowed to lose sight of the human cost. On July 12, 1933, Lester Ziffren, a 27-year old journalist from Rock Island, 1 The following account Illinois, arrived in Madrid as the new United Press (UP) correspondent. is constructed entirely on the basis of Lester Spain is a backwater, he thought, of interest largely to UP’s biggest client in Ziffren’s private South America, La Prensa.1 papers. -

The varied traditions, festivals, and rituals of daily life reflect the special character of its people and have made the Andalusian region a wellspring of cultural heritage, not just for dance and song but for poetry, art, and literature. Through the language of flamenco, this special ‘Poem’ pays tribute to the unique land and people of Andalucía MALAGA: EL SOL DE PICASSO Choreography: Susana di Palma Pablo Picasso was born in this sunny seashore city, his early works reflect the sun and lightness of his spirit before the development of his more serious later works. I Pregón Taurino De Nueva York
I Pregón Taurino of New York City Ignacio de Cossío y Pérez de Mendoza Delivered to the members of the New York City Club Taurino Alger House 45 Downing Street New York, NY April 11, 2006 English translation by Bob Harlow and Lore Monnig 1 I PREGÓN FOR THE NEW YORK CITY CLUB TAURINO 2006 By Ignacio de Cossío y Pérez de Mendoza Ladies and Gentlemen, good evening and thank you to all for being with me on such a special day. In the first place, I would like to thank the New York City Club Taurino for giving me the opportunity to be here with all of you to talk about the bulls and my native city of Sevilla as a key piece in understanding the history of tauromaquia. I am no stranger to American soil, because in 1988 I came to the US for the first time to study in eleventh grade in Whitmore-Prescott High School in Michigan. And my stay here was so satisfactory that I did not hesitate to return the following year to graduate from Northview High School in Los Angeles, California. It was precisely there that I wrote my first taurine work, “Los toros”, for an assignment in my World History class in May of 1991. Also during those glorious student years I was able to get to know 22 of the 50 states that today make up your beautiful country. The fiesta of los toros has long had a warm and close friendship with the United States thorough famous people such as Ernest Hemingway.
