ORGANISATIONAL SUMMARY OF GROUPS DESCENDING FROM ARNOLD HARRIS MATHEW

by John Kersey

Revised edition – July 2020

A summary of this sort is necessarily incomplete, and also must to some extent be an act of historical interpretation. If such summaries have faults, it is that they emphasise division and separation where the reality they reflect is in practice less linear and less clear-cut, with many cross-currents between groups. Nevertheless, such a presentation of data has its uses in terms of broad definitions of history.

The aim of this work is to trace those groups that have a jurisdictional descent from one or more of the churches or other religious groups under the leadership of Archbishop Arnold Harris Mathew (1852-1919). The importance of jurisdictional descent is both historical and spiritual. It establishes that a group has a moral, and often a legal, right to be considered part of the Mathew legacy.

However, it should not be thought that jurisdictional descent is the only factor of importance. Many groups which do not have a jurisdictional descent have been established by who can trace their through Archbishop Mathew, and some groups that profess Old Catholicism as Archbishop Mathew would have understood it have derived their jurisdiction and episcopate from other sources entirely. There is no reason why they should not be found to be equally or more faithful to the ministry and principles that Archbishop Mathew maintained as his jurisdictional successors listed below.
