Is your favorite Boomer on the list? Johnny Depp is there. Who would you add? There were almost 80,000,000 baby boomers born between 1946 and1964. We decided to look at each and every one of them and see how many of those boomers became famous. Not all of the boomers below became famous for the right reasons, but still, they are famous none the less. And by famous, we mean a “household name”. From actors to presidents to mobsters, there certainly are some incredibly famous and influential baby boomers amongst us. Please feel free to comment below if we missed any obvious ones. 33 EDGE ou’ve seen Hank Azaria’s face a hundred times and inte rview heard his voice a thousand Y more. Or maybe ten thou- sand more. Fans of The Simpsons Hank Azaria know him as the man behind the voices of ill-tempered bartender Moe Syzslak, gluttonous police chief Chauncey Wiggum, sad-sack Comic Book Guy, hillbilly Cletus Spuckler and America’s favorite convenience store clerk, Apu (“Thank you come again”) Nahasapeemapetilon. Azaria’s over- the-top film roles include fork-flinging superhero The Blue Raja ( Mystery Men ), 1950s sports legend Patches O’Houlihan ( Dodge Ball ), megalo- maniacal pharaoh Kahmunrah ( Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian ) and inept houseboy Agador Spartacus ( The Birdcage ). To this long list of indelible characters add Jim Brockmire, the title character in IFC’s Brockmire , a new comedy co-starring Amanda Peet. The show follows the travails of a legendary announcer banished to the bush leagues after a profanity-filled on-air meltdown. Gerry Strauss talked to e Azaria about what it takes to slip into c n e r w the shoes of one unique character a l d i v after another…and what makes his a d y b newest role the culmination of a long, o t o h personal journey. Scott McQuire, ‘Digital dialectics: the paradox of cinema in a studio without walls', Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television , vol. 19, no. 3 (1999), pp. 379 – 397. This is an electronic, pre-publication version of an article published in Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television. Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television is available online at http://www.informaworld.com/smpp/title~content=g713423963~db=all. Digital dialectics: the paradox of cinema in a studio without walls Scott McQuire There’s a scene in Forrest Gump (Robert Zemeckis, Paramount Pictures; USA, 1994) which encapsulates the novel potential of the digital threshold. The scene itself is nothing spectacular. It involves neither exploding spaceships, marauding dinosaurs, nor even the apocalyptic destruction of a postmodern cityscape. Rather, it depends entirely on what has been made invisible within the image. The scene, in which actor Gary Sinise is shown in hospital after having his legs blown off in battle, is noteworthy partly because of the way that director Robert Zemeckis handles it. Sinise has been clearly established as a full-bodied character in earlier scenes. When we first see him in hospital, he is seated on a bed with the stumps of his legs resting at its edge. The assumption made by most spectators, whether consciously or unconsciously, is that the shot is tricked up; that Sinise’s legs are hidden beneath the bed, concealed by a hole cut through the mattress. This would follow a long line of film practice in faking amputations, inaugurated by the famous stop-motion beheading in the Edison Company’s Death of Mary Queen of Scots (aka The Execution of Mary Stuart, Thomas A.

  • The Uses of Animation 1
The Uses of Animation 1 1 The Uses of Animation ANIMATION Animation is the process of making the illusion of motion and change by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation. Animation can be recorded with either analogue media, a flip book, motion picture film, video tape, digital media, including formats with animated GIF, Flash animation and digital video. To display animation, a digital camera, computer, or projector are used along with new technologies that are produced. Animation creation methods include the traditional animation creation method and those involving stop motion animation of two and three-dimensional objects, paper cutouts, puppets and clay figures. Images are displayed in a rapid succession, usually 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second. THE MOST COMMON USES OF ANIMATION Cartoons The most common use of animation, and perhaps the origin of it, is cartoons. Cartoons appear all the time on television and the cinema and can be used for entertainment, advertising, 2 Aspects of Animation: Steps to Learn Animated Cartoons presentations and many more applications that are only limited by the imagination of the designer. The most important factor about making cartoons on a computer is reusability and flexibility. The system that will actually do the animation needs to be such that all the actions that are going to be performed can be repeated easily, without much fuss from the side of the animator.

  • Comedians, Characters, Cable Guys & Copyright Convolutions
Legal Lessons in On-Stage Character Development: Comedians, Characters, Cable Guys & Copyright Convolutions Clay Calvert⊗ ABSTRACT This article addresses the trials and tribulations faced by stand-up comedians who seek copyright protection for on-stage characters they create, often during solo performances. The article initially explores the current, confused state of the law surrounding the copyrightability of fictional characters. The doctrinal muddle is magnified for comedians because the case law that addresses the fictional character facet of copyright jurisprudence overwhelmingly involves characters developed within the broader framework of plots and storylines found in traditional media artifacts such as books, comic strips, cartoons and movies. The article then deploys the 2014 federal court ruling in Azaria v. Bierko as a timely analytical springboard for addressing comedic-character copyright issues. Finally, the article offers multiple tips and suggestions for comedians and actors seeking copyright protection in their on- stage characters. I. INTRODUCTION The Whacky World of Jonathan Winters aired on television from 1972 through 1974.1 The humor of its star, Jonathan Winters,2 came primarily “from his construction of outrageously fantastic situations and characters.”3 Those characters included the Oldest Airline Stewardess4 and, perhaps most notably, ⊗ Professor & Brechner Eminent Scholar in Mass Communication and Director of the Marion B.
