Next Saturday, May 7th is a special day in the history of the Pensacola Yacht Club. PYC and five other area yacht clubs will host the entire community as Pensacola brings Aviation Week to a close. May ‘11 • Page fleet captain’sSTAff NOTES report Stephen Suchy, General Manager John Buziak By the time you read this, Pensacola Yacht Club will have just hosted the largest One Design racing event to date this year, the GYA Opening Regatta. This event included Flying Scots (Capdeveille), Lightnings, 420s, lasers and a variety of “Beach Cats”. Some of our local sailing authorities think of PYC as a “big boat” or “perf” club. The level of participation by local sailors in this Regatta challenges this contention with local competitors in every class that competed. One design racing is far from dead at PYC! Not only is it not dead, it is an essential part of the sailing ecosystem that keeps this club alive! As we work to attract younger members they are most likely to assimilate in to a one design fleet for reasons of economics, logistics and personal satisfaction. Healthy One Design Fleets rely heavily on readily available dry storage. As the dry storage area is one the most lucrative concessions at PYC, One Design fleets also contribute to the overall financial well being of the club. If you consider the history of the club as a whole, the absence of a recognized one design fleet is an aberration. The Club was founded to support racing of the Fish Class. Over the years the club has hosted a Fleet (#89 which was founded and 1970 and existed until 1985). The Jubilee perpetual trophy was constructed from a Thistle’s transom from that fleet, Mayger’s. Pensacola Yacht Club also hosted Fleet #324. Jim Krippes, an enthusiastic Lightning sailor, provided me with a roster dating from 1963 showing the venerable Paul Scheck, racing Lightning #4690. Jim owned Lightning #7349. In the intervening years the club has hosted multiple one design national and regional championships including Snipes, Lasers, , Thistles, Flying Tigers and Corsairs to name only few. This year will be no different. On the near horizon we have the Junior Olympic Regatta. We have a good crop of Junior Sailors who will be competing in , Lasers, 420 and Flying Scotts who will be competing on their home waters. Now that we have the oil spill behind us we will see between 60 and 80 young sailors converging from all over the Southeast on Pensacola Bay. This Regatta often has one of the largest spectator fleets. If you have not gotten out on the water to see“Promoting a Regatta, this is a great onethe to hitch Finest a ride and seeHomes what it takes into get Northwest Florida” a boat around a course. You will also see some of the finest kids you will ever meet out there competing their hearts out. We are also entering the meat of the Capdeveille season. In my very first article I pitched the idea of opening up our effort to the masses. We now have three Scotts ready for action. The goal is to get all three boats out on the water racing locally and growing that in to on the road efforts. Even if you have not sailed in years, get in touch with Adam Sammis ([email protected]). We will get you out on the water and help you shake the rust out. If nothing else, you may have a little fun. In the absence of organized one design racing, dinghy sailors have resorted to the Portsmouth handicap system. This system enables boats that would normally be raced as one design fleets. Bert Rice is putting together a sailing instruction for Portsmouth Racing for Wednesday Nights. This is one more opportunity to pull that boat out of storage and get out on the water! Farther down the road is the Thistle National Championship, the first week in August. You will likely recognize many of these sailors. They are frequent guests at the Jubilee and campaign Scots for their respective clubs at the Schreck. This regatta could draw as many as 80 boats (gas prices not withstanding). This would mean more than 200 sailors and another 100 or more coming along for moral support. If you are in the Chamber of Commerce and reading this article take note! That’s more than a few hotel rooms. Preview Property Specialist In the fall look for 420s to be added to the list of classes sailing in the annual Call 850-572-1944 Jubilee Regatta. Last year this Regatta drew nearly forty boats. This year we [email protected] could see sixty boats with the 420s. For many of the sailors who have attended the Jubilee the past few years this has now become a “must sail” regatta. The Jubilee is part of a larger trend in the gulf region. The Wadewitz in nearby Fairhope has a large open component in addition to the Capdeveille event.

In recent years they have seen as many as 200 boats attend spanning seven Each Office is Independently classes. Owned and Operated Next year watch for the Ultimate 20s to come in the summer!

Gorham, Kirby and Kathryn were second, third and fourth in White Fleet respectively, and Dominic Leccese finished th6 in Blue Fleet. Saturday was a (15-18 knots) endurance test, and all the kids did great. Page 10 • May ‘11 CRUISER’S CORNER NOTES ff JTA imS & Linda Oyler Stephen Suchy, General Manager General Suchy, Stephen A huge thank you to all those who helped out with the raft-ups. We appreciate you all so much. The weather for the March raft-up was ideal. We had bright sun at Fort McRae but could see the rain clouds lurking around inland. Eighteen boats and about 35 people made the trip. We had some new faces and entertained guests who were cruising our waters from Gulfport. The burgers were grilled to perfection and the variety of side dishes was amazing. Sunday morning we had a dolphin show as four dolphins swam lazily through the anchorage. The water was still a little chilly for swimming but that didn’t stop the kids from playing in the tide line and gathering hermit crabs. The crabs spent most of the weekend in a bucket of water and emerged none the worse for wear. Before we left the beach Sunday afternoon the hermit crabs were all lined up for the race to freedom. Everyone watched and cheered them on as they left their tiny tracks in the sand. There is truly something for everyone at our raft-ups! Ten boats made their way through the fog for the April raft-up in Little Sabine. The weather this weekend was most unusual. The temperature ranged from mid 60s to low 80s depending on whether the fog blanket had lifted or descended. It did both many times over during the weekend. As always, the food was delicious and plentiful. Many thanks to Commodore Scott Traweek and our friends at PBYC for opening their doors to us. Genella kept everyone happy from her side of the bar and Erica organized a pub crawl that was great fun.
