A Harris Creek ‘How To’ Guide
The season of Advent is all about JESUS. We can decorate it and entertain ourselves in order to pretend like Christmas is about us, but this holiday is about Christ. Advent Conspiracy is a global movement of people and churches resisting the cultural Christmas narrative of consumption by choosing a revolutionary season of celebration through Worshipping Fully, Spending Less, Giving More, and Loving All. Harris Creek annually supports Advent Conspiracy, and we have provided a brief list of ideas for your household to participate in the cause this season.
• Enjoy family worship on Sunday mornings through the Advent season • Attend “Lessons and Carols” (December 6, 6:00pm at Common Grounds) • Light a candle at your office or home as a reminder of God’s presence • Read Scripture regularly - Parents can pick up the Jesus Storybook Bible Advent reading schedule WORSHIP FULLY from our Kids Ministry
• Brainstorm ideas for an experience that requires little to no money - Drink hot chocolate while viewing neighborhood Christmas lights - Bake and decorate Christmas cookies (for you and for a friend) - Watch a Christmas movie - Attend Baylor’s “Christmas on 5th“ (December 3) - Write a “Thank You” to God for ways He provided for your needs • Take inventory of what you already possess, and consider what you should SPEND LESS donate to a collection site or homeless shelter. Now, do we really need all those items on our shopping list?
• Identify creative ways to share kindness with others in the community (from your church leaders and friends to local clerks and mail carriers) - Handwritten notes - Spoken words of encouragement - Arts and crafts to share a personal touch - Acts of service like sweeping sidewalks and picking up litter • Stuff gift bags with practical items (toiletries, socks, water, non-perishable GIVE MORE snacks, hand sanitizer, etc.) to always be prepared to respond when you see someone in need
• Make a list of people to pray for each day during Advent - Harris Creek Baptist Church - Key leaders in your city and in your nation - People who are sick or lonely - Family members - Christians living out their faith daily - Orphans and kids awaiting adoption or foster care • Donate a new, unwrapped toy to Mission Waco’s Toy Store and sign up to serve at the store (Saturday, Dec. 5 – http://vols.pt/xqoeeD) LOVE ALL • Sign up to volunteer for the next meal Harris Creek shares with Church Under the Bridge (Sunday, Jan. 31 -- http://vols.pt/Lm5J2d)
