AUTHORIZATION: The project was approved by the River and Harbor Act of August 1935 in accordance with Rivers and Harbors Committee Document No. 38, 72nd Congress and modified in Document No. 60. It was also modified in 1954.

BACKGROUND:

The location of the Ocean City inlet is on the far eastern Aerial view facing south of Ocean City Inlet and boundary of Maryland along the Atlantic Coast. Assateague Island to its south.

The project provides for an inlet channel 10 feet deep from the Atlantic Ocean through West Ocean City harbor. The inlet channel width varies from 100 to 200 feet. The inlet channel is protected by two stone jetties at the entrance from the Atlantic Ocean. The project also includes a channel 6 feet deep and with widths that vary from 100 to 150 feet in Sinepuxent Bay from the inlet to . The project also includes a channel 6 feet deep with widths that vary from 75 to 125 feet from the inlet into the Isle of Wight Bay.

STATUS: The project is in the operations and maintenance phase. The Ocean City inlet has a history of shoaling rapidly, especially near the entrance to the West Ocean City harbor. Limited maintenance dredging of the Ocean City inlet via one of the Corps’ special purpose dredges will be accomplished with fiscal 2020 funds. This work is often done in conjunction with the Assateague Island Restoration Project dredging.

SCHEDULE:

FY 2019 Completed Work:

Approximately 30,000 cubic yards of material were removed through maintenance dredging of the Ocean City inlet. The maintenance dredging was carried out by Corps' special purpose hopper dredges with material being beneficially used in the surf zone near Assateague Island.

FY 2020 Scheduled Work:

Periodic maintenance dredging of the Ocean City inlet via Corps’ special purpose dredges is planned throughout FY 2020 to remove additional material from the inlet with FY 2020 funds.

Existing Project: The project provides for an inlet channel 10 feet deep and 200 feet wide from the depth in the Atlantic Ocean through the Inlet to the channel to the Isle of Wight Bay, protected on the south side by a stone jetty with a top elevation of 8.8 feet above mean low water and top width 18 feet, and on the north side by a stone jetty with a top elevation of 9 feet above mean low water and top width of generally 20 feet; a channel 150 feet wide and 6 feet deep from the Inlet channel to the project harbor, with widths of 150 to 100 feet to the head of the harbor with two turning basins of the same depth; a channel 6 feet deep and 150 feet wide from the Inlet to Green Point, and thence 100 feet wide in Chincoteaque Bay, and a channel 6 feel deep and 125 feet wide from the inlel channel to a point opposite North Eighth Street in Ocean City, then 75 feet wide into the Isle of Wight Bay.

Range of Tide: 3.4 feet.
