JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL EAGLE NEWS

september 2019

Hello Parents & JHS Students,

On behalf of the faculty and staff, we would like to welcome you to the upcoming academic school year at Jefferson High School. We are excited about the upcoming school year and the opportunity to work with you. As a school, we strive for con- tinuous improvement. Through the cooperative efforts of students, parents, staff and community members, we can maintain the highest standards for our young people to learn and achieve. We truly believe that we have the greatest student body and faculty around! We hope you are looking forward to a great school year.

The students that walk our halls each day are our #1 priority. Jefferson High School has a history of excellent academic and extracurricular accomplishments. We will do whatever is necessary for our students to be successful and to make our school a better place for them. Students can benefit from everything Jefferson High has to offer by being actively involved in their clas- ses and co-curricular activities that are offered. We are here to make their year as successful and educationally challenging as possible.

Jefferson High School continues to be rich in spirit, tradition, and excellence. We embrace the exciting challenge of preparing our young adults academically, socially, and emotionally with the skills necessary to be successful in the 21st century whether that be college or a career pathway. We also believe every student deserves the opportunity to look back on his or her high school experience and feel a sense of pride, purpose and accomplishment. Go Eagles! Sincerely,

Steve Dinkel Richard Lehman Principal Associate Principal

Important AP Information

Attention JHS Parents and Students:

I hope you and your family have been enjoying the great Wisconsin weather we have been experiencing. There are some fairly significant changes that have taken place to the AP College Board and AP testing for this upcom- ing fall. As a school that has had excellent AP offerings and opportunities for our students I wanted to update par- ents and our AP students of these changes.

Beginning in the 2019-20 school year, the AP® Program is introducing new resources and processes designed to help students earn college credit and placement.

Here’s what you and your student need to know: ▪ Students will be asked to register for AP Exams in the fall (by November 1, 2019). AP Exams will continue to be given in May. ▪ The exam fee isn’t changing. However, there will be a $40 fee for late registration (after Nov. 15) and a $40 cancelation or unused exam fee. ▪ Jefferson High School will collect fees in the counseling office. ▪ Students will get personalized feedback through new digital tools that provide daily support for every AP classroom. Their teachers will be able to track their performance throughout the year using monthly personal progress checks.

To get ready for the coming school year, please encourage your student to sign up for a College Board account. All College Board programs are connected through one account, so if your student created one for the PSAT/ NMSQT®, SAT®, or College Board Opportunity Scholarships, they’re all set. They’ll just need to have their username and password available.

Learn more at parents.collegeboard.org.

JHS students- if you’re taking AP® next year, make sure to set up your College Board account HERE.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Stephen Dinkel Principal Jefferson High School

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Jefferson High School is now using Schoology, an integrated learning management solution that provides course management, mobile learning, and support for system-wide communication. Schoology enables our students, parents and teachers to engage with learning materials and their school community from the classroom and be- yond. Our goal at JHS is to continue the journey of providing our students with 21st century tools for learning. We look forward to using Schoology in all of our classrooms starting this school year to enhance connectivity and communication across our school and district.

With Schoology, students can digitally submit homework assignments, review grades, participate in interactive discussions, receive announcements and feedback, take tests, write academic blogs, and more. As a parent, you will be able to view your child’s activity within the platform.

Early College Credit & Start College Now

Early College Credit Program (UW System) and Start College Now (Tech School) allows juniors and seniors who meet certain requirements to take post-secondary courses at a UW institution, a Wisconsin technical college or one of the state’s participating private nonprofit institutions of higher education. Approved courses can count toward high school graduation, as well as for college credit. Under the Early College Credit/Start College Now Programs, a student will not have to pay for a college course if the school board determines the course qualifies for high school credit and is not comparable to a course already offered in the school district. If the course is approved by the school board, the student can receive one-quarter high school credit for every one college credit earned upon successful completion of the course. A student who successfully completes his or her high school graduation requirements will earn a high school diploma regardless of whether the requirements were met while attending the high school or a college. To obtain the necessary forms or to discuss the possibility of participating in the these program, con- tact the Jefferson High School Counseling office. Applications for enrollment in the Early College Credit/Start College Now Pro- grams must be made by October 1st for the spring semester. The request will be presented to the School Board and the student will receive notification of the board’s decision.

Wisconsin Education Fair

Wisconsin Education Fairs provide easy access to information about postsecondary options. WEF includes in its participant list all UW state universities and centers, Wisconsin's independent colleges and universities, Wisconsin technical colleges, and many out-of-state institutions. In addition, many community colleges, trade schools, and the national service organizations, such as the armed forces are represented. All interested students are invited to attend. The intent of the program is to better serve the public by providing prospective students the opportunity to browse freely and meet with professional staff members from approximately 100 postsec- ondary institutions in one central location. Students are encouraged to register online today at WI College Fairs for a fall fair.— www.wefs.org CBS news - vaping linked to lung damage Yale Medicine - Teens underestimating health impacts of vaping Lab tests reveal e-cigarette liquids contain harmful chemicals

Jefferson High School’s HOSA - Future Health Profes- sionals chapter had eight students attend the Interna- tional Leadership Conference (ILC) in Orlando, Florida June 18-23. Six of these students competed at ILC. In order to qualify for competition they needed to place in the top three at the State Leadership Conference in April. These students were: Lauren Nash (Medical Law and Ethics), Mikayla Punzel (Human Growth and De- velopment), Jenna Arnold (Extemporaneous Health Poster), Elizabeth Munoz-Cuadra (Medical Reading), and Megan Worzalla and Kiersten Kinkaid (Healthcare Issues Exam). The other students, Amy Griffin and Mya Magner, took competency exams and attended train- ings. All students attended educational sessions and the HOSA expo, were able to have some fun at various Dis- ney parks, and soak up some Florida sun. JHS’s HOSA chapter was recognized with a merit award for their contribution to HOSA’s National Service Project that supported the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Even though no students placed in the top ten, ILC was 2019 ILC attendees (l-r) a great experience. The students were able to learn front row: Mikayla Punzel, Megan Worzalla, many things at the educational symposiums, network Elizabeth Munzo-Cuadra and Lauren Nash with people from all over the US and the world (there back row: Jenna Arnold, Mya Magner, Amy Griffin, Kiersten Kinkaid were members from Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and China at the conference), and spend time exploring their interests in health care. With over 11,000 people in attendance, ILC was an awesome experience to be able to attend. In order to attend, JHS HOSA had sponsorships and support from various businesses and individuals including: Fort Health Care; AVON HI-LIFE Inc.; Eby Family Dental; Watertown Re- gional Medical Center; Jefferson Rotary; Reinhardt-Windl American Legion Post 164; Bender, Kind, and Stafford Dental; Fort Dental Care; The Drug Store; Blodgett Garden Center; and many School District of Jefferson Employees.

JHS HOSA thanks you for your support!

JHS WELCOMES AFS EXCHANGE STUDENTS

Over the next nine months, these two young ladies will get the chance to experience the life of an “American High School Student". They will live with an American Host Family, attend school, participate in sports and go to all the activities of an average high school student living in small-town U.S.A.

Please contact Jefferson High School to learn more about Hosting an AFS Exchange Student or the AFS Study Abroad Programs.

Yearbook

Commonly asked questions about our YEARBOOK:

When is the deadline to submit senior portraits?

Deadline for submission of senior portraits is December 1st.

Preferably, we would like you or your photographer to submit a photo electronically. Please e-mail to [email protected] or copy onto a CD. To submit a photo manually, please send a wallet-size photo to Mr. Beil in room 104 at the high school. Please note that the photo will not be returned.

Please follow the dress code guidelines set within the student handbook (i.e. no hats, bandanas, costumes. etc.). JHS Yearbook reserves the right to refuse submission of photos.

Why aren’t yearbooks delivered in the Spring?

If yearbooks arrived in Spring, the yearbook staff would have to complete the yearbook pages by March. Our publisher needs time to process, print, and deliver the books by May. These deadlines mean that any event after March, including Prom, all spring sports, and graduation, would be included in the NEXT year’s book. Therefore, your child’s senior year would be spread over two yearbooks. In order to cause less confusion, the decision has been made to deliver the books in Fall, encompassing students’ entire year into one yearbook.

Where can I pick up my yearbook?

If you were unable to attend the SDoJ’s registration day in August, we still have your yearbook. If you want it be- fore school starts, stop by the office, where the books are currently located. Any senior who has graduated can pick up his/her yearbook at the office, too. Once school starts, Mr. Beil will have your book in room 104. Please stop by to get it!

How can I order a yearbook?

The yearbook staff uses exclusive online ordering system. For online shopping, log on at http:// www.jostens.com and find the products at Jefferson High School. There, you can purchase the yearbook, auto- graph pages, and personalize your book. This is another receipt for you to have for proof of purchase. We peri- odically send out postcards as reminders. If you’ve received a postcard, we have not entered your sales into our database yet.
