Upper School Students Hockaday | St. Mark’s | Cistercian Junior Patrons’ Guild 2019-20 Cultural and Fine Arts Season

JPG online registration: August 19 – September 6

This year, Ed Long’s Junior Patrons’ Guild (JPG), will be marking its 39th season. As subscribers to Junior Patrons’ Guild, students will attend a variety of exciting cultural and fine arts events with Upper School students from The , St. Mark’s School of and Cistercian Preparatory School. JPG is the only formally organized co-ed social and cultural program involving these three schools, and it provides an opportunity for students to socialize while seeing some of the best performances various arts organizations have to offer.

The main events in the JPG subscription series are priced together as one package. The Guild Series includes transportation between Hockaday and the event, a meal, some social time, and a brief presentation regarding the performance. The Guild Series is offered at a reduced price based on group ticket rates. Financial aid is available.

The total package for the JPG Series of five events, meals, and transportation will be $320.

Sunday, September 29 (afternoon)- The Dallas Theater Center presents In the Heights In the Heights, a musical by Lin Manuel Miranda, is the winner of the 2008 Tony Awards® for Best Musical, Best Score, Best Choreography and Best Orchestration. The story takes place over the course of three days and shares a narrative of the character’s lives in the Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights. Music that is eclectic and vividly electric supports a story about teenagers, change, family, and belonging. In the Heights is one of the best new musicals to emerge from the New York Stage.

Sunday, October 20 (afternoon)- The Dallas Opera presents The Magic Flute Mozart’s Magic Flute transports the audience to a mythical land between the sun and moon. Following the handsome Prince Tamino on his journey to rescue the Princess Pamina, the listener will recognize some of Mozart’s most famous arias. The Dallas Opera presents the Sir Peter Hall Production under the baton of Emmanuel Villaume. This presentation of The Magic Flute is “guaranteed to delight the kid in us all.”

Saturday, November 2 (evening)- The Dallas Symphony Pops presents The Nightmare Before Christmas The Dallas Symphony Pops presents Tim Burton’s stop-motion animated classic The Nightmare Before Christmas. Watch the Pumpkin King’s attempts to steal Christmas on the big screen while Sarah Hicks conducts The Dallas Symphony performing Danny Elfman’s enchanting score. Costumes are encouraged.

Sunday, January 19 (afternoon)- The Dallas Summer Musicals presents The Blue Man Group Experience the unique phenomenon of The Blue Man Group. A custom combination of performance art, comedy, music, multi-media, invented instruments, and blue faces, this show will not disappoint. The group’s performances are cool, literally in your face, eloquent and gross by turns. They are designed to entertain and engage the audience without a spoken word.

Sunday, February 9 (afternoon)- The WaterTower Theatre presents Harvey Written in 1944, this Pulitzer Prize winning play by Mary Chase imparts the story of Elwood P. Dowd and his best friend, Harvey, a six-foot invisible rabbit. Imagination and reality interweave in this story and introduce the audience to a good-natured spirit and a beautiful friendship which test the boundaries of acceptance. Do not be surprised if you leave the theater looking for Harvey.

The JPG registration period is open from Monday, August 19 to Friday, September 6. The total cost for the JPG Series of five events, meals, and transportation will be $320.

Hockaday Parents: Please sign into the parent portal at Hockaday.org, select the JPG tile located on the Resource Board and follow the link to the online JPG registration form. After completing the online registration, you will select to charge your student’s school account as the payment option. Parents will receive an email to complete the online authorization form at the end of the registration period. It will be located on the Resource Board and is required for all JPG participants.

St. Mark’s and Cistercian Parents: The link below will direct you to the online JPG registration form. After completing the online registration, select payment type as check and print the JPG parent authorization form. Registration is complete when both a check, payable to The Hockaday School, and a signed JPG parent authorization form are submitted to your school’s JPG Faculty member.

St. Mark’s students: Please deliver your JPG check and authorization form in an envelope to Ellen Jurgens re: JPG in the upper school office.

Cistercian students: Please leave your JPG check and the authorization form in an envelope for Mr. Saliga with Mrs. Nevitt at the front desk.

Communication for Events: A JPG Evite invitation will be sent to the student email address provided in the registration approximately seven to ten days prior to each event. The Evite will include all pertinent event information. Please encourage your student to reply promptly to the JPG student Evite. We will send a separate parent email with all JPG event information to the parent communication email address provided in the registration. We are unable to include parents in the JPG student Evite invitation.
