1st SEMI FINAL - LEXTON Vs MALDON

Lexton defeated Maldon in Sunday’s First Semi Final at Princes Park and won their way into a Preliminary Final berth of the Bendigo Bank Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League.

After an interesting start to the game, where Maldon young gun Tommy Horne goaled before the siren had sounded to start the game, both teams traded goals in the opening quarter before Lex - ton led by just nine points at the first change.

The Tigers then kicked four in a row in the second term, helped out by some ill discipline by the Bombers before Maldon kicked a couple of late goals to cut the Tigers lead to 18 points at half time.

Robert Mosby and Matthew Brown kicked Lexton's first two goals of the second half to break away from the Bombers which made it tough to reduce the margin. The Tigers had the answers and would respond to all Maldon’s challenges. Jimmy Templeton made a welcome return as did Damon Aspland, but it was Matthew Brown and Rob Mosby who finished off the good work in front of the goal sticks with ten goals between them.

Maldon were well served by Kel Chaffey-Jones, Tom Cain and Hayden Kelly while Matt Kile pro - vided a target and finished with three goals, but the Bombers were no match for the Tigers as the final siren rang with the Tigers leading by 29 points.

Lexton has now set up a contest with Newstead in next Sunday’s Preliminary Final for a chance to meet the winner of Carisbrook or Navarre in the Grand Final.

2nd SEMI FINAL - NAVARRE Vs NATTE BEALIBA

Navarre is one step closer to its third grand final appearance in as many years after the Grasshop - pers disposed of Natte Bealiba in the MCDFNL semi finals on Saturday.

The Hoppers capitalised on some good work in front of goal in the first half and managed to hold off a late Swans surge to win 15.11 (101) to 10.9 (69) at Princes Park.

The Swans lead at the first change, 2.3 (15) to 1.3 (9), but that was the extent of their lead for the day as some of Navarre's stars came to the fore with Kris Brennan, Ash Driscoll and Ben Scott combining to lift the undermanned Grasshoppers and establish a 23 point lead at half time.

Scott was particularly instrumental for his side, slotting four majors and playing a hand in several others, while Bryce Tickner, Daniel Reading and Jayden Fowkes were also impressive.

Natte skipper and centre half forward Mark Fitzgerald worked tirelessly to try and drag his side back into the contest, as did experienced campaigner and veteran midfielder Brent Mortlock, while Ryan Weir continued to prove he is one of the competition's most dangerous small forwards with three goals to his name.

Navarre will now advance to a preliminary final showdown with minor premier Carisbrook, while Natte's season is over for 2013.

Navarre & Carisbrook and Lexton & Newstead battle for Grand Final berth

The Bendigo Bank Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League Preliminary Finals takes place at Princes Park this Saturday and Sunday and big crowds are expected to attend a couple of real crowd pleasing games.

CARISBROOK Vs NAVARRE

The game many tipped to be the MCDFNL grand final will be played this weekend, with Carisbrook and Navarre instead squaring off in the opening preliminary final at Princes Park on Saturday.

The Redbacks and the Grasshoppers finished the home and away season in first and second place respectively, but a loss to Newstead at the qualifying final stage meant Navarre had to progress to the prelim via a hard-fought semi final win over Natte Bealiba last weekend.

The Grasshoppers could be boosted however, with rumours swirling that coach Daniel Parkin and key forward Zane Bigmore could both return from what many thought would be season-ending in - juries in Saturday's clash.

The two sides have squared off twice already this season, with the unbeaten Redbacks taking the points on both occasions, but Navarre know how to win preliminary finals, with two wins at this stage in two consecutive years testament to their ability to win when it counts.

The Redbacks were in devastating form in their only finals appearance so far, scoring a mammoth win over Lexton in their qualifying final, and the minor premiers will be looking to inflict some simi - lar pain on Navarre.

The match should feature some tantalising match-ups, with 2013 Berry Powell medallist Matt Bil - ton and his midfield mates, Ryan Hudson-Morgan and Marcus Emmett going toe-to-toe with Navarre's Driscoll brothers and a host of others, while at opposite ends of the grounds, Kris Bren - nan and Nathan Wright likely to attract the opposition's best defender, with Tim Heenan likely to line up on Brennan, while Brent Flood should get the job on Wright.

NEWSTEAD Vs LEXTON

Lexton are back on track after a big loss to Carisbrook a fortnight ago, but won a tough contest against Maldon last week to progress to this week’s match against Newstead.

It was not all one way traffic however as they had to fight hard to shake the Bombers who continu - ally applied the pressure to the Tigers, but the forward work of Matt Brown and Rob Mosby al - lowed the Tigers to obtain a six goal lead at three quarter time which was unattainable for Maldon to run down.

The return of Jimmy Templeton added some run to the Tigers and he will need to be covered by the Steaders in this do or die match on Sunday.

Newstead have hit form at the right time of the season and won a spiteful game over Navarre in the Qualifying Final and the inclusions of Sam Kerr and Ethan Ford has played a big part in the form improvement. Both are hard running players and set up play from the half back line while it will be interesting to see where Mark Ramsey lines up. Ramsey generally starts at full back, but went forward against Navarre and kicked three telling goals for the Steaders.

He may be needed down back though to curb the goalkicking skills of Tiger spearhead Matthew Brown who was at his best last week against Maldon.

A close contest is expected and it will be no surprise if either team are victorious at 5pm on Sun - day.

Best of luck and I’m sure just like the players, you will enjoy and remember the experience. Well done to Field Umpire Brian Edwards who officiated his 150th BFL Senior Match last week - end. Umpire Abuse – It is important that all spectators and officials are reminded about umpire abuse. Unfortunately this season so far there have been some umpires that have received abuse while they have been umpiring. This type of behaviour is simply unacceptable and will not be tolerated. The umpires are out on the field to do their best job each week and on occasions they will make mistakes, just like players do! Umpire Related Issues – If any club has an umpire related issue that they would like to discuss with the BFUA in 2013, could you please email Liam Brady at [email protected]. Each issue will be dealt with accordingly and passed onto the appropriate people within the BFUA. It is important that if a club does have something to discuss with the BFUA, the issue is presented to the BFUA through the right channels within your club. 30 MCDFNL ADVOCATE FINALS WEEK 3 14-15/09/2013 Visit: www.mcdfl.vcfl.com.au NETBALL REPORT - NETBALL MANAGER KARA MURRAY

Last week saw the semi’s prove to be another great week of finals. Bad luck to Natte & Carisbrook on exiting the finals series in 2013. Saturdays’s game saw Newstead advance through to the prelim finals with a win over Natte. New - stead got off to a strong start which saw them lead by 7 at the first break. The remainder of the game stayed tight with each quarter being even for the rest of the match. Accuracy under the post proved to be a key factor in this game with Newstead shooting 20% more accurate than their opponents & with 8 less goal attempts for the match. Natte found some momentum in the final quarter & closed the gap a little, however Newstead where more determined on the day & ran away winners. Mid court players Ash Edwards (Natte) & Jasmine Coleman (Newstead) were named best on for each side. Jess De Neef & Amanda Guthrie both played a strong game in Newstead’s defense line. Newtsead meet Navarre in the first Prelim final today, both eager to secure a spot in the ultimate match of the year THE GRAND FINAL. Newstead head into the game as the underdog’s, but will come out firing with nothing to lose. Navarre have dominated the season & will be out to keep their great form for 2013 alive. These 2 sides only met once during the home & away season, Navarre victors by 7 goals. Navarre got off to a good start with a lead of 7 at quarter time & 14 at half time, however New - stead fought back in the second half outscoring their opponents by 7 goals. Key matchups for this game to look out for will be Navarre’s Jess Williamson against Newstead’s Jasmine Coleman, Jasmine will have to stick tight, put a lot pressure on Jess & stop her beautiful feeds into the goalies. Newstead’s Jess De Neef against Navarre’s Taylor Mason will also prove to be a great matchup. Over the past few weeks Jess has shown some extreme pressure in defense & with her good height will stand strong against Taylor. Navarre shooting accuracy was very good in their first final against Lexton & will need to continue that into today’s semi final. Probably the toughest game to pick of the final’s series so far, I predicted both teams at the start of the season to be the ones to beat. In saying that, there has to be a winner & I think Newstead will shock many & come away victors by a close margin. Sunday last week we saw Lexton beat Carisbrook in a tight & physical game. Both teams got off to a shaky start, but Carisbrook with more accurate shooting saw them jump to a 2 goal lead at the first break. Carisbrook’s Sheriden Byrne was absent for the match which was a huge loss for the team. Lexton’s Rachel Phelan was back from injury & gave great confidence back to her team mates. Lexton’s middle 2 quarter won the game for them with defensive turnovers & goalie ring work the key. Lexton had a lead of 8 during the final quarter, however Carisbrook never stopped fighting with closing the gap to just 1 goal with less than a minute to go. Lexton kept possession of their centre & were able to score a goal in the final seconds of the game. Lexton face Maldon in the 2nd Prelim final tomorrow. The pair met twice during the season with a win a piece. Lexton lost by 1 goal in round 2 to a full Maldon side, however turned the result in round 15 with a 9 goal win, Maldon’s Fiona Themman & Bec Lovett both absent from that match. Lexton attacking end this week will have to be spot on & accurate shooting will be a key factor. Maldon has proved to have one of the strongest defense in the competition with the least goals shot against during the home & away season, Lexton on the other hand scored the most goals for the competition during the home & away season. Lexton’s Kim Tiley & Maldon’s Bec Lovett will line up on each other for the first time this season, Kim played a very strong game in defense for the Tigers last week & will be out to do the same again tomorrow. Maldon’s Fiona Themman has been seen rotating through GD & GK during the season & which ever Lexton Goalie lines up on her will have to be ready for a tough game against a very strong, tall & smart defender. Another hard game to pick, however with Lexton’s finals experience they should upset the 2nd placed Maldon in a tight match to advance through to the Grand final. Best of Luck to all teams playing this weekend

Trentham - Saints Snipets www.trenthamfc.vcfl.com.au

Trentham Saints 13+under girls played a great game against Talbot on Sunday but Talbot proved just a little too strong on the day.

The young Saints tried hard and are now out of fi - nals contention but they have had a great season. Congratulations to Holly Wheeldon for coaching this year it has been a big commitment.

Well done. Our U15 footballers will take on Avoca to play for a spot in the grand final.

This week for the first time they have had some solid training under the new lights giving them a chance to hone their skills before the game.

Our boys have had a great season so far and we wish them and their coach Justin Hoffman the best of luck.

The Saints have achieved some milestones this season with the addition of these better training lights it all goes well for the Saints in 2014.

“Go Saints”
