Peyton DeJong Philip, SD | South Dakota State University, Agriculture Education and Communications “I believe that it is important for me to give back to my community, which has given me so much, and I think that is one of the reasons as to why I am a BURGER KINGSM Scholar. This scholarship is going to make a large difference in my educational career. Not having to worry about money and taking out student loans will take a load of stress off of me and I will be able to better focus on my studies. I am very excited to see what the future holds and can’t wait to go into a career of agriculture and continuing doing what I love.” Courtney Thurston Mechanicsburg, PA | Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Computer Engineering “Coming from a single-parent household, I was lucky to have a mother who was always supportive of me despite our circumstances— our financial situation, my disability, and the after-effects of domestic violence. She supported my research, helped me keep going when I heard ‘no,’ and allowed me to travel for internships even when we couldn’t immediately afford it—she always believed in me. More than anything else, this scholarship means being able to show my mom that she was right: her sacrifices were worth it.” Gloria Tso Bartlesville, OK | Columbia University, Political Science “For some, a scholarship may just seem like a monetary contribution towards one’s future. For me, a scholarship is an emotional contribution—not just a financial investment, but a personal investment of one’s time and efforts into my dream. With this honor, I can garner the bravery to move forward in my education and studies without having hesitations. I have a plan not just for my future, but for the future of the world—and I will do whatever it takes to see my plan through.” TM & © 2016 Burger King Corporation. All rights reserved. 2015 BURGER KING SM SCHOLARS REGIONAL EMPLOYEE AWARD WINNERS Investing in our employees is at the core of the Foundation. • Social Media and the Burger King Brand
Case #6-0025 Social Media and the Burger King Brand Russ Klein took the position of President of Global Marketing, Strategy, and Innovation at Burger King Corporation (―BKC‖) in 2003. It was a difficult time for the company. Sales and profits were down. Franchisees were unhappy. The BURGER KING®* brand had lost its edge; the vast majority of consumers were aware of the Burger King brand but no longer found it interesting or compelling. BKC as a company needed a turnaround, and had just been purchased by a private equity group. Klein‘s mission was to rejuvenate the Burger King brand and rebuild relevance to the consumer as part of a major revitalization of the company. What followed was a series of strategic decisions and innovative, risky marketing campaigns that would breathe life back into the brand and win awards for BKC and its agency Crispin Porter and Bogusky (CP+B). Many of the innovative marketing tactics used by BKC relied on interactive, digital media channels. The most talked about of these initiatives was a website called ―The Subservient Chicken.‖ This website, launched for very little money and with little fanfare, became an internet phenomenon, attracting hundreds of millions of visitors and winning various awards for its ingenuity as a viral marketing campaign. BKC went on to establish highly trafficked Burger King branded MySpace pages, special programs where users could create their own Burger King ads online, and other non-traditional marketing programs. By early 2006, BKC was known as an innovator in content driven marketing and the creative use of social media.

  • Burger King Is the World´S Second Largest Fast Food Hamburger Restaurant (FFHR) Company
    1. CASE BACKGROUND: Burger King is the world´s second largest fast food hamburger restaurant (FFHR) company. The BKW system includes over 12,600 restaurants in the U.S. and more than 80 other countries worldwide, with 95% of the system currently operated under a franchised business model. Burger King Corporation was founded in 1954 in Miami, Florida, by James McLamore and David Edgerton. McLamore and Edgerton, both of whom had extensive experience in the restaurant business before starting their joint venture, believed in the simple concept of providing the customer with reasonably priced quality food served quickly in attractive, clean surroundings. The success and size of Burger King Corporation is the result of a tradition of leadership within the fast-food industry in such areas as product development, restaurant operation, decor, service, and advertising. At the end of its fiscal year 2007, Burger King reported that there are more than 11,300 outlets in 69 countries, 66% are in the United States and 90% are privately owned and operated. The company has more than 37,000 employees serving approximately 11.4 million customers daily. The company's two largest franchisees are Carrols Corporation with over 325 restaurants in United States, and Hungry Jack's, which exclusively owns, operates or sub-licenses over 300 restaurants in Australia. In 2010, 3G Capital, a global multi-million dollar investment firm focused on long term value creation, purchased Burger King Corporation, making it a privately-held company. The buyout marks the largest leveraged acquisition of a fast-food chain ever, and the second for Burger King in the last eight years.
