This year, marks a very special milestone for the BURGER KING McLAMORESM Foundation—our 10th anniversary Steve Lewis, President year and celebration of a decade’s worth of advancing education for students around the world. U.S. Restaurants, Inc. Foundation Co-Chair As the Foundation’s new executive director, I am humbled by all we’ve been able to accomplish. As the pages of this annual report reveal, the most important part is we did it together—we made a difference building brighter Alexandre Macedo futures through education and emergency relief with amazing support from global partners and individuals who North America President generously supported our initiatives in 2015. Education is a key part of success, and we focus on bringing that to students in North America through our flagship program, BURGER KINGSM Scholars. Through it, we award scholarships to deserving high school seniors and BURGER KING® employees, their spouses and children to help advance their education. Three years ago, the Foundation launched a unique partnership with the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) with the goal of advancing education and building brighter futures for students who dream of making it, much like Jim McLamore once did, in the restaurant industry. The NRAEF hosts a culinary and restaurant management competition each year, the National ProStart Invitational, which welcomes top students from each state to compete for a spot in nationals.

In April, we partnered with the NRAEF once more to grant an additional $50,000 in BURGER KINGSM Scholars awards to students in the ProStart Invitational. The $1,000 scholarships were awarded to each member of the first through fifth place winning teams at the event in Anaheim, Calif.

“Where Are They Now” Having graduated college already, Kendra, Jane and Breanna have moved on to the next step of building their bright futures. We are proud of their achievements and to have them as part of our BURGER KINGSM Scholars family.

Kendra Jensen, Brigham Young University Kendra graduated Magna Cum Laude in April and took a job with Walmart as the Replenishment Manager for Beverages. She is also the president of her women’s church group where she manages and promotes financial, spiritual, emotional and physical vitality of others.

“I’ve realized life doesn’t get easier after college—it becomes even more of a balancing act and what you spend your time on is what is most important to you. My future plans are to get my MBA in the next five years, start a blog of my life adventures, and write and illustrate a children’s book. The impact from the scholarship I have received is still far reaching and touched more than just my life alone.”

Jie Jane Chen, University of California, Berkeley Graduating with double majors in Psychology and Public Health in May, Jane has been coordinating clinical trials with the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Stanford Cancer Center, along with working on several research projects, some of which she will submit to academic journals. Jane has also been mentoring students at Stanford and UC Berkeley for research and medical school applications.

“In August 2016, I will be starting my first year at Harvard Medical School. I am excited to begin the journey of learning to be a doctor!”

Breanna Haag, College of St. Scholastica, Duluth A recipient of a Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Breanna graduated from College of St. Scholastica, Duluth in May 2015 with a concentration in Exercise Physiology. Following graduation, she went on a dream trip with her mother to the U.K., exploring Scotland and London. Upon their return, she started graduate school for physical therapy.

“The past year has been exciting and busy! I currently am completing my first physical therapy internship and starting my second of three years of the doctorate program at my alumni St. Scholastica. My plans in the next few years will be to finish my doctorate degree and work in northern Minnesota because I love my home state and would love to stay close to family and friends.” 13

BKSM BEACH RUN

The third annual BKSM Beach Run hit the sand running in Miami Beach to raise funds and run for education with the community. More than 1,800 runners and supporters joined the Foundation on the sand to make this event a success in October, raising more than $110,000 for scholarships in the South Florida community.

We like to celebrate each BURGER KINGSM Scholars awards and achievements. Each year, we invite BURGER KINGSM Scholars from the South Florida community to awards ceremonies to celebrate and network with the rest of their class.

ESTABLISHING A ROOM TO READ

Libraries, schools, literacy programs and children’s books in local languages. These are all things the Foundation supports in various underprivileged countries through its partnership with Room to Read. This organization is dedicated to bringing literacy and gender equality to students in the developing world.

Through this partnership, the Foundation funds ongoing literacy programs in South Africa, Cambodia, Tanzania, Zambia, India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. These projects focus on providing ongoing teacher training and support, quality reading materials, and safe, child-friendly learning environments in regions that need it most. 5 LOCAL LANGUAGE IMPACT THROUGH LITERACY PROGRAMS THIS YEAR: BOOKS PUBLISHED

Not only does Abigail gain knowledge at a Room to Read and Foundation library, she shares it, too! Her two younger cousins, Thomas and James, are now avid readers thanks to Abigail, who has set up a mini classroom in her home. Every week, Abigail and her two cousins read at least one storybook to each other at home, sharing their dreams and encouraging each other to reach their goals.

“I feel like I am on top of the world because the library is the key to my future dream,” Abigail said.

In Latin America, many communities do not have access to education, which increases crime, health issues and unemployment. The Foundation’s partnership with TECHO helps bring education to these communities by building learning centers. This year, the Foundation’s fundraising efforts resulted in more than $38,000, partially raised through our second annual BURGER KING® Dominican Republic in-restaurant campaign, “Sharing Tastes Better.”

The first BK® learning center began construction in the Los Alcarrizos area of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

TECHO is dedicated to eradicating poverty by building homes and learning centers in underprivileged communities in 19 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean.

FAMILIES WERE Salomon had already had a difficult year, experiencing the loss of his daughter and young granddaughter in another horrible car accident. AWARDED NEARLY With the unexpected loss of his family Salomon needed help rebuilding. That is when his BK® family was there to help. Through the BKSM Family $145,000 IN Fund, Salomon was provided an emergency relief grant to help him move forward during this tragedy. RELIEF GRANTS.
