Introduction Congratulations on your purchase of the Rio 600 portable digital audio player! Rio is the perfect companion for active people—delivering skip- free for people on the go. The Rio connects easily to your PC or Mac for downloading compressed digital audio tracks. Use the Rio soft- ware to convert tracks from your audio CDs into formats for playback on the Rio or to download tracks from the Internet. Before you can listen to your favorite music with your Rio you must first: 1 Install the battery. 2 Install the Rio software from the CD-ROM. 3 Connect the Rio to the USB port on your . This guide shows you the basics of how to set up and start using your Rio. Caution while driving Use of while operating a vehicle is not recommended and is unlawful in some states and areas. Be careful and attentive while driv- ing. Stop operation of the player if you find it disruptive or distracting while operating any type of vehicle. Instead of using headphones, use the car cassette adapter accessory to listen to the Rio through your car’s speakers. Copyright law This product is for personal use only. Copying CDs or downloading music for sale or other business purposes is a violation of copyright law. It is also a violation of copyright law to download files without permis- sion of the copyright owner. Care of the Rio Exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures may cause damage or malfunction to the player. Do not clean the player with solvents, chemi- cals or abrasive cleaners. Power up the Rio 1 Firmly press the button on the back of the Rio 600 and slide the backpack toward the bottom of the player to detach the backpack. 2 Remove the backpack from the Rio 600. 3 Remove the cover over the backpack battery compartment. Lightly squeeze the cover to unsnap the tabs that hold it in place. prism.book Page 10 Thursday, August 17, 2000 3:40 PM

4 Insert the size AA alkaline battery into the backpack battery compartment. Match the + and - ends on the battery to those shown beside the battery compartment. 5 Replace the battery compartment cover. Lightly squeeze the cover and insert the two small tabs in place first, then snap the large tab into place. 6 Reattach the backpack to the Rio Slide the backpack from the bottom of the player toward the top, until the backpack clicks firmly into place. 7 Plug the earphones into the multifunction port on top of the Rio. 8 Slide the power switch on top of the Rio to On. 9 Press >/|| (top joypad button) to listen to the Rio welcome message. prism.book Page 11 Thursday, August 17, 2000 3:40 PM

Install the software PC 1 Place the software CD in the CD-ROM drive on your computer. After a few seconds, the installation menu displays.

2 Click the Install button on the installation menu. Select Rio Audio Manager. 3 Follow the instructions on the computer screen. 4 Reboot your computer when the installation is complete. prism.book Page 12 Thursday, August 17, 2000 3:40 PM

If the installation menu does not display automatically, follow these steps to begin the installation manually: 1 Click the Start button in bottom left corner of the computer screen and choose Run... 2 Type d:\setup32.exe in the field labeled Open. If your computer’s CD-ROM drive uses a letter other than “d”, substitute that letter for “d”. 3 Click the OK button and follow the on-screen instructions. Tip: When the installation is complete, the Rio Audio Manager icon is visible on your computer’s desktop. Mac 1 Place the software CD in the CD-ROM drive on your computer. 2 The CD contents display automatically. To manually display the CD contents, double click the icon on your computer’s desktop. 3 Double click the Install button. Plug in the USB cable 1 2

1 Plug one end of the USB cable into the multifunction port on top of the Rio. 2 Plug the other end of the USB cable into the USB port on your computer. On the Mac, the USB port is typically located on the keyboard. Register the Rio player and software To register the Rio player, click the Register button on the installation menu. Remove the backpack to see the serial number (S/N) located on the back of the Rio player under the backpack. To complete software registration, follow the instructions when install- ing the software. For online software registration, the Rio player must be connected to the computer and turned on. To register Rio Audio Manager, click the software Help menu, then click Upgrade Online. Register Rio Audio Manager on each computer you plan to use it with. SoundJam prompts you to register online when you first open the pro- gram. View and print the User Guide Click the User Guide button on the installation menu to see the Rio 600 User Guide. It contains: • Instructions on how to use Rio 600 menu options and settings • Accessory information • A glossary of digital audio terms • Frequently asked questions (FAQ) and troubleshooting information • Warranty and regulatory information • Customer care information Tip: Use Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4.0—available on the Rio soft- ware CD-ROM—to view the User Guide. Step 2 Start using the software Rio Audio Manager (PC) The Rio Audio Manager creates, stores, and organizes your digital audio tracks. The software incorporates tools for you to manage digital audio content from your PC. Click the buttons along the top of the Rio Audio Manager window to use the various digital audio management tools. Use Rio Audio Manager to: • Create and organize the audio content on your computer. • Organize the audio content on your Rio player. • Write an audio CD. • Create compressed digital audio tracks from your music CDs. You can convert your entire CD collection into compressed digital format. The Rio Audio Manager software allows 50 free MP3 tracks converted from CD-ROM prior to registration. • Search for and download digital audio from the Internet. Overview of the Rio Audio Manager software tools: Make a Click this button to build and manage and albums to listen to on your PC. Organize audio tracks on your computer. 1 Click the make a playlist button. The empty window displays. 2 Click the Select Tracks from Database or the Select Playlists from Database buttons. 3 Select tracks you wish to listen to by clicking the check box to the left of the title. Scroll down as necessary to find a track. 4 Click the OK button. The main screen displays the selected tracks. Copy to devices Click this button to organize the content on your Rio. 3 Click the copy to devices button. 4 Click the Select Tracks from Database or the Select Playlists from Database buttons. 5 Select the tracks you want to download from your playlist by clicking the check box to the left of the song title. 6 Click the OK button. 7 Click the Copy to Portable button. Read a cd Take your favorite song from a CD and convert it into compressed digi- tal audio format for playback on the Rio or on your PC. 1 Insert an audio CD in your computer’s CD-ROM drive. 2 The software prompts you to go online to the CD Database (CDDB) Web site for title, artist and track information. Rioport.com The built-in Internet browser connects you to sites like the RioPort Web site at www.rioport.com. Search for your favorite audio tracks on the Web and download them directly to your computer. To download a song from the RioPort Web site: 1 Click the title. 2 Click the Download button. Use the help system to learn more The Rio Audio Manager software includes online Help. Using buttons and controls 1 Power (On/Hold/Off): Slide the power switch on top of the Rio to turn the power on and off, or to put the player buttons in Hold mode. Hold temporarily locks the buttons on the Rio except the Power switch. 2 + and - (Volume): Press + to increase the volume; press - to decrease the volume. 3 Menu: Press Menu to display Audio, Player, Prefs, and About menu options. Press the >> and << (Forward and Reverse) joypad buttons to nav- igate to different menu options. Press Select (the center joypad but- ton) to choose the highlighted menu option. Press >/||, I, >>, and <<; (Play/Pause, Stop, Forward, and Reverse); to navigate through menu options. Press Menu again to hide the menu display and return to Play mode. 4 Joypad clockwise from the top: • >/|| (Play/Pause): Press this button to play; press again to pause. When paused, the Play/Pause icon appears as two vertical bars on the LCD, and the Current Song Position blinks to show the time it was paused. If the Rio is left in Pause mode for an extended period of time, it goes into sleep mode to conserve battery life. Press >/|| again to wake the Rio from sleep mode. • >> (Forward): Press and release >> to skip to the next track on the Rio. If the Rio is playing a track it advances to the next track and starts playing. Press and hold >> to fast-forward through the track currently playing. • I (Stop): Press I to stop playing the current track. Press and hold I for about two seconds to put the Rio in sleep mode. Press >/|| to wake the Rio from sleep mode. • << (Reverse): Press << to skip to the previous track on the Rio. previous track and starts playing. Press and hold << to fast- rewind through the track currently playing. • Select (the center button on the joypad): Press Select to choose a menu or dialog option. 5 Liquid Crystal Display (LCD): In play mode, the LCD provides the following information—clockwise from the top left:

• Song name: Displays the title of the currently selected track. Song name scrolls if the name is longer than the width of the display. • Hold icon (lock): Appears if the player is set to Hold mode. Hold locks all buttons except the Power switch on the player. • Divider line: Serves as a visual break to organize the display. • Current song position: Displays the play location in the current track in minutes:seconds (mm:ss) form. prism.book Page 29 Thursday, August 17, 2000 3:40 PM

• Play/Pause icon: Displays either a “play” icon (triangle) or a “pause” icon (two vertical bars), to show the current action of the player. • Volume level: Displays the volume setting in both digital and graphic form. The bar-graph disappears as volume is reduced and re-appears as volume is increased. Volume level ranges from 0-20. • Track display: Displays the number of the currently selected track and the total number of tracks on the player. Tracks are numbered from 1-99. If a playlist is active, the track count shows the number of tracks in a playlist. • Album name/track information: Displays album and artist name and track information. If the name is longer than the width of the display, the name is cut off with an ellipsis. (“…”) Album name displays for a few seconds, then disappears. After album name disappears, artist information displays, followed in a few seconds by track information. (XXX kbps), and the file size (XX:XX). If the album name is not available, only track information displays. When the Menu button is pressed, the LCD displays the following options.
