Iowa collides with Higgs boson

Photo: Martial Trezzini/AP/Keystone The Large Hadron Collider was used in the recent discovery of a Higgs boson-like particle. Despite being located in Geneva, the project received help from physicists at Iowa State, who analyze data from the experiments. The collider, which began operation in 2008, is the largest in the world, measuring about 5.3 miles in diameter, and is used by scientists with CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, to study the immediate aftermath when atoms collide at extremely high speeds.
