Never before have so many trillions of dollars been represented by valuation of stocks. For over 30 years, a substantial number of ordinary American citizens have participated in the stock market through tax-deferred contributions to their personal or employer’s retirement plan. The internet and online trading removed some of the mystery and reduced the cost of directly participating in a stock market previously reserved for the Rockefellers.
