Ali S Country Singer Singer/Songwriter of Tradi�Onal Country Music Ali S Country Singer Singer/Songwriter of Tradi0onal Country Music www.aliscountrysinger.com Ali S Country Singer Ali S is an Indigenous Country Music Singer/Songwriter from Boulia. Boulia is a remote outback community in North West Queensland, which has a populaon of 300, is situated 300km south of Mt Isa. Ali’s cultural heritage originates from the people of the Yulluna Tribe. Ali S has spent the majority of his life in North West Queensland, where he has worked as a Plumber, Underground Miner and Road Contractor. His love of singing has also been there, whether he is singing to his work crew while camped out on the Plenty Highway between Boulia and Alice Springs for weeks at a 0me, or heading down to the 'local' in Mt Isa and Boulia with his crew on his days off. Ali S began his singing career in Boulia and the surrounding shires, where he became something of a “local hero”, performing at community events, at pubs and clubs and where he sang alongside Steve Forde. Ali's music is inspired by ar0sts such as George Strait, Brooks'n'Dunn, Alan Jackson, Adam Harvey and Troy Cassar-Daley. Ali S is a country man whose songs reflect his strong country pride- his hard work and unique country voice keep him determined to grow as an Australian Country Music Ar=st. Ali S Country Singer Ali S is a singer/songwriter who loves performing ‘good old’ Country Music. He has a huge repertoire of music from, Brooks and Dunn, Alan Jackson, George Strait, Luke Bryan, Adam Harvey, Lee Kernaghan, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Kenny Rogers and Kid Rock to name a few. Ali also plays a number of Original Tracks which are based around love, life on the land and the heroes who entertain us. Completing a PhD is not the usual path for someone who has grown up in public housing and experienced childhood as a welfare dependent. The majority of my cohort from Chingford Hall Estate did not complete school beyond Year 10. As far as I am aware, I am the only one among my Estate peers to have a degree and definitely the only one to have attempted a PhD. Having a tertiary education has set me apart from my peers in many ways, and I no longer live on the Estate (although my mother and old neighbours are still there). But when I go back to visit, my old friends and neighbours are interested in my education and they congratulate me on my achievements. When I explain that I’m writing about people like them – about stories they can relate to, they are pleased. The fact that I can discuss my research with my family, old school friends and neighbours is really important. If they couldn’t understand my work there would be little reason for me to continue. My life has been shaped by my class. It has affected my education, my opportunities and my outlook on life. I don’t look back at the hardship with a fuzzy sense of nostalgia, and I will be forever angry at the class system that held so many of us back, but I am proud of my working-class family, friends and neighbourhood.

Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years.

Her style is challenging notions of cultural musical identity and the vocal characteristics that are associated with a particular environment. The ways in which Chambers approaches Country Music and the connection to the development of cultural identity is reflected in her music . The connection of what? In this paper I will touch on the phenomenon of her broad Australian-speaking accent and her American accented singing voice. The success of Chambers’ sound raises vital issues about the national character in Australian popular music. It is an interesting representation of the globalisation of international music culture that an Australian singer is being so highly regarded in the North American press as representing the latest (re-) incarnation of American roots/country music.
